Overview of campgrounds near Bowmans Addition
Bowmans Addition is an unincorporated community in Allegany County, Maryland, sitting in a valley just north of Cumberland between Wills Mountain and Shriver Ridge. For RV travellers, it functions as a base within the Cumberland area, close to the Potomac River, the C&O Canal towpath, and the Allegheny ridges of Western Maryland.
The closest developed campground is Spring Gap Campground, a National Park Service site along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park at Mile 173.3 of the towpath. It is a small, primitive drive-in campground with pit and portable toilets, a seasonal hand-pump well, and site lengths capped at roughly 20 feet, so it suits vans, small trailers, and pop-ups rather than large motorhomes.
Larger rigs and families wanting hookups typically look to private campgrounds in the surrounding hills. Hidden Springs Campground, Eagle's Nest Campground, Millesons Walnut Grove Campground, and Middle Ridge Campground round out the closest options, giving campers a mix of primitive canal-side sites and private-park amenities within a short drive of Bowmans Addition.
Things to do near Bowmans Addition
The C&O Canal towpath is the anchor activity. From Spring Gap Campground, the flat, crushed-stone path runs roughly 12 miles into downtown Cumberland, making it a manageable out-and-back ride for families with e-bikes or hybrids. The campground also has a boat ramp on the Potomac River used by kayakers, canoeists, and anglers; a Maryland fishing license is required for anyone 16 or older.
In Cumberland itself, the C&O Canal National Historical Park Cumberland Visitor Center, the Allegany Museum, the Gordon-Roberts House, and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad give rainy-day and rest-day options. Hiking, wildlife watching, and lake recreation are available at nearby state parks in the Allegheny foothills, including trails through hemlock forest and rhododendron along Rocky Gap Run.

The Cumberland area has four distinct seasons: hot, humid summers and cold winters that are milder than surrounding highlands but still bring regular snow. Monthly mean temperatures range from about freezing in January to the mid-70s Fahrenheit in July, with average seasonal snowfall around 30 inches. Elevations along Wills Mountain and the Allegheny Plateau run colder and wetter than the valley floor.
Peak camping season on the C&O Canal runs from mid-April through mid-November, when Spring Gap's hand-pump well is switched on (roughly April 15 to November 1). Outside that window the campground stays open, but campers must haul in their own water and expect freezing overnight temperatures. Private campgrounds in the area generally follow a similar spring-to-fall operating pattern.
Summer weekends and fall foliage in October are the busiest periods. Nearby Rocky Gap State Park now requires day-use reservations on weekends and holidays, and its campground fills quickly, so weekend arrivals without reservations should have a backup plan.
How to book campgrounds near Bowmans Addition
Spring Gap Campground and the other drive-in campgrounds within Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park require reservations. Paying cash on arrival is not accepted. Bookings open up to six months in advance through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777, and a credit or debit card is required at the time of booking.
Maryland state parks in the region, which are useful backups when private sites near Bowmans Addition fill up, use a separate system at parkreservations.maryland.gov or 1-888-432-2267, with a booking window of up to 12 months ahead. Private campgrounds such as Hidden Springs Campground, Eagle's Nest Campground, Millesons Walnut Grove Campground, and Middle Ridge Campground are booked directly with the operator. On high-demand summer and fall-foliage weekends, sites can be difficult to secure last minute, so book early.
What to expect on arrival
Spring Gap is a basic National Park Service campground with 12 single drive-in sites and two group sites, each with a picnic table, fire pit, and grill. Facilities are limited to pit and portable toilets, and there are no hookups; sites 3-7, 12, and 14 fit RVs, trailers, or pop-ups up to 20 feet, while the other single sites take standard vehicles only. Alcohol is prohibited, the park is trash-free (pack it out), quiet hours run 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and stays are capped at 14 consecutive days between May 1 and October 1.
Expect some road noise from adjacent Route 51 and occasional passing trains. Cell coverage is inconsistent in the ridges around Bowmans Addition. Private campgrounds in the area typically offer more services, including electric hookups, dump stations, showers, and playgrounds, at the cost of a more developed setting.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Bowmans Addition, MD?

Because you're tucked into western Maryland's Allegany County rather than a major metro, you tend to avoid the markup you would see closer to Baltimore or DC. For a cheap RV rental Bowmans Addition trip, search midweek dates in May or September, when nightly rates often drop noticeably. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book on RVezy to lock in your dates fast, since the Cumberland area gets busy during fall foliage weekends in October.

Booking is low-risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and the policy is not displayed on individual listings. Your refund amount depends on how far in advance of your trip start date you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit so your plans aren't left in limbo. If a winter storm rolls through the Allegheny Mountains and impacts your trip, RVezy's support team can help you sort out next steps. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates and review the cancellation terms in your booking confirmation.

dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/RockyGap.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Bowmans Addition?
Yes, RV delivery Bowmans Addition is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to Rocky Gap State Park, Green Ridge State Forest, or a private campground of your choice, level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing, no backing into a tight site, and no stress. Just use the Delivery filter when searching to see hosts who offer this service. Pro tip: delivery fees usually scale with distance, so picking a campground within 30 miles of Cumberland keeps costs down.

nps.gov/shen/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Bowmans Addition, MD?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Bowmans Addition. The top picks include Rocky Gap State Park (15 minutes east in Flintstone, with lakefront sites and full hookups available), Green Ridge State Forest (Maryland's second-largest state forest, with rustic drive-in sites just east of Cumberland), Little Orleans Campground (a riverside private park along the C&O Canal), Spring Gap Campground (a quiet C&O Canal NHP site right on the Potomac), and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Hagerstown for families wanting pools and activities. Pro tip: Rocky Gap books up 6+ months ahead for summer weekends, so reserve early through the Maryland State Parks system.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/RockyGap.aspxWhen is the best time to visit Bowmans Addition in an RV?
Late April through late October is the sweet spot for an RV trip in this part of western Maryland, with the real magic happening in late September and early October when the Allegheny foothills explode in fall color. Summer highs in Bowmans Addition typically run 80-87°F with cool 60°F nights (thanks to the elevation around 800 feet), making it noticeably more comfortable than DC or Baltimore. Spring brings wildflowers along the C&O Canal, while winter dips into the 20s-30s with occasional snow. Pro tip: book the first two weekends of October for peak foliage along the Great Allegheny Passage, but reserve at least 3 months ahead since locals know it's the best time too.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be in great shape, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through how to operate the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedures, with no rushed handoff. You can also message the host anytime during your trip with questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included in your booking. The roads around Bowmans Addition are mostly gentle two-lane routes (Route 40 and I-68), which are far less intimidating than driving an RV in a major city. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, since they handle more like a large SUV than a bus.
roads.maryland.gov/What happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is just a phone call away whether you're parked at Rocky Gap State Park or rolling down I-68 toward Deep Creek Lake. The roadside team can dispatch a tow truck, send a tire change, deliver fuel, or help with lockouts and jump-starts. Keep your host's number handy too, since they know their RV best and can troubleshoot quirks (like which breaker controls the microwave) over the phone in minutes. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you have the info ready if you ever need to call for help during your Cumberland-area trip.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Bowmans Addition RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, crossing state lines is totally fine on RVezy rentals, which is great news since you're just a short drive from West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Virginia from Bowmans Addition. Many guests build out multi-state loops, hitting Harpers Ferry, WV; Ohiopyle, PA; and Shenandoah, VA all on one trip. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the insurance setup, so message the host directly through the listing to confirm before you book. One important note: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a classic loop from here is Cumberland to Pittsburgh via the Great Allegheny Passage corridor, about a 130-mile drive each way.
cbp.gov/travelHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Bowmans Addition?
Fuel is one of the bigger trip costs, but it's very manageable. Travel trailers don't burn extra gas beyond what your tow vehicle uses (usually 10-14 MPG when towing), Class C motorhomes average 8-12 MPG, and larger Class A coaches run 6-9 MPG. Gas prices in Allegany County tend to track close to the Maryland state average, often a bit cheaper than the DC/Baltimore corridor. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $150-$200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Cumberland or LaVale before heading west into the mountains, since stations get sparser past Frostburg along I-68.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Bowmans Addition?
For the best campgrounds near Bowmans Addition, aim to book 3-6 months ahead for summer and fall weekends. Rocky Gap State Park reservations can be made up to a year in advance through the Maryland State Parks reservation system, and prime lakeside sites get snapped up fast for July, August, and October foliage weekends. C&O Canal NHP hiker-biker campsites along the towpath are first-come, first-served and free, which is a nice backup. Private parks like Little Orleans Campground typically take reservations several months out. Pro tip: book your RVezy rental first, then reserve your campground the same day so your dates lock together for your family RV trip Bowmans Addition adventure.
nps.gov/choh/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat are the local driving conditions like around Bowmans Addition?
Driving here is more relaxed than you might expect for a mountain region. I-68 (the National Freeway) is a wide, modern interstate with manageable grades, and Route 40 offers scenic two-lane driving through historic towns. You will encounter some real climbs (Big Savage Mountain west of Frostburg has a 6% grade), so take it slow in lower gears going down. Winter can bring snow and ice from December through March, so check Maryland 511 before heading out. Pro tip: avoid driving narrow backroads like Route 51 along the Potomac at night, and stick to I-68 and US-220 for the smoothest RV experience around Cumberland.
chart.maryland.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Bowmans Addition?
You'll find a great mix of options. Rocky Gap State Park offers electric hookups, modern restrooms, hot showers, a dump station, and lake access with a swimming beach. Green Ridge State Forest is more rustic (no hookups, vault toilets), perfect if you want quiet and stars. Little Orleans Campground has full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, and a camp store. For dumping and filling fresh water mid-trip, Rocky Gap and most private parks in the LaVale/Cumberland area offer dump stations for a small fee ($10-$20) even if you're not staying there. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water-safe hose and a 30-amp adapter, since some older sites have only 30-amp service.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/RockyGap.aspxWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Bowmans Addition?

Expect a queen or king bed, additional bunk or convertible sleeping for 4-8 people total, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a wet bath or full bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many listings also include a generator for off-grid power, a TV, and outdoor awnings. Wi-Fi varies, so if you need to stay connected, message the host before booking. Pro tip: cell signal can get spotty in Green Ridge State Forest, so download offline maps and your entertainment before leaving Cumberland.
fcc.gov/consumers/guides/wireless-connections-and-bill-shockWhat add-ons can I get with my Bowmans Addition RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer a long list of useful add-ons to customize your trip. Common ones around Bowmans Addition include bedding and linen packages ($30-$75), kitchen kits with cookware and dishes ($25-$50), outdoor camp chairs and tables ($15-$30), bike racks (helpful for the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail), generators, fire pits, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home base in or near Cumberland, with drop-off at the same location at the end of your trip. Mileage policies vary by host, with daily limits of 100-150 miles being common and unlimited-mileage options available for longer hauls. Pro tip: bundling add-ons with one host is usually cheaper than renting gear separately in town.
nps.gov/choh/planyourvisit/biking.htmHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through the secure RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or a card directly to the host. You pay your rental total when you book, and a refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before the trip starts (the amount is set by the host and shown at checkout). As long as the RV comes back in the same condition it left, the hold is released after your trip ends. Do a thorough walkaround video at pickup and drop-off with the host present, noting any existing dings. Pro tip: snap photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer at both ends of your Bowmans Addition trip so everything is documented and your deposit returns smoothly.
