Campgrounds near Calverton, Maryland
Calverton sits along the Route 29 corridor in central Maryland, between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, which puts RV renters within a short drive of both national and state park campgrounds. The area works well as a base for exploring the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums, and the Chesapeake watershed without staying in downtown traffic.
Options range from full-hookup commercial parks to primitive federal sites. Greenbelt Campground is an urban oasis just 10 miles from Washington, D.C., and this wooded park is known for its safety, affordability, peaceful surroundings and National Park Service hospitality. Cherry Hill Park in College Park is a large full-service RV resort near the capital, while Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday and Ramblin' Pines offer family-oriented private campgrounds within an hour's drive.
For renters who want a river valley setting rather than a city base, Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area sits west of Baltimore with wooded loops along the Patapsco River, though this campground is currently closed for renovations. Together these properties cover the full range from primitive tent-friendly loops to paved pull-throughs with sewer, water, and cable.
Things to do near Calverton
The area's biggest draw is Washington, D.C. Most nearby campgrounds sit on or near Metro bus and rail routes, so families can leave the RV parked and ride into the city for the Smithsonian, the National Zoo, and the monuments. Cherry Hill Park runs a shuttle to the Metro, which simplifies day trips with kids.
Outdoors, Greenbelt Park is forested with a mix of pine, oak and maple trees, mountain laurel blooms throughout the park in May, and deer and chipmunks are commonly seen along Still Creek. The Patapsco Valley State Park corridor offers hiking, tubing, and mountain-bike trails along the river, though the Hollofield campground itself is closed for renovations. Baltimore's Inner Harbor, the National Aquarium, and Annapolis are all within about an hour of most campgrounds in this corridor.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Calverton area. April and May bring wildflowers, moderate temperatures, and lighter humidity, and October delivers reliable foliage across the Patapsco and Anacostia watersheds. Both shoulder seasons see heavy weekend booking from Washington and Baltimore day-trippers, so reserve early.
Summer is peak season for family travel but also the hottest and most humid stretch, with afternoon thunderstorms common. There is a tick notice in the Mid-Atlantic region in spring and summer, so take precautions such as using tick repellent. Mosquitoes are active near wooded and wetland sites through August.
Winter is quiet but still viable at some properties. Greenbelt Park Campground typically operates year-round with reservations required through Recreation.gov, and Cherry Hill Park operates through the winter as well. Maryland state park campgrounds typically run shorter seasons, and the Hollofield loop at Patapsco Valley is currently closed for renovations, so confirm operating status before booking.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.
Ronald V. - Oct 2026
We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

Both VANessa and Vanessa were awesome. All the amenities are thoughtfully available. Van drove well and my son and I had a trip we’ll talk about for years and remember forever. Vanessa is a great communicator and great person. 5+ stars.

Had an amazing travel experience with VANessa and Vanessa was a joy to work with. So very accommodating. The van is beautiful and has everything you could want. Even my pup Seamus gave it two paws up!

How to book
Federal sites in this area are booked through Recreation.gov. You may book 6 months in advance, payment is not accepted on site, and you must book your campsite in advance or upon arrival using the Recreation.gov website or call center at 1-877-444-6777. Weekends from May through October fill quickly, so set a reminder for the six-month rolling release.
The Hollofield area campground at Patapsco Valley State Park is currently closed for renovations, while the Hollofield day use area is open regular hours and the day use pavilions are available to reserve. Other Maryland state park campgrounds are reserved through the Maryland Park Service reservation system online. Private parks such as Cherry Hill Park, Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday, and Ramblin' Pines take reservations directly through their own websites or the KOA booking platform, and typically allow longer booking windows than federal parks.
What to expect
Hookup availability varies sharply by property. Private parks in this corridor generally offer full water, electric, and sewer with pull-through options for larger rigs, while federal campgrounds tend to be primitive. At Greenbelt there are no electrical or water hookups available, but hot showers, bathroom facilities and a dump station are available to registered campers.
Rig-length limits matter here. B Loop at Greenbelt has 46 sites open to tents and RVs, though most are for smaller RVs of 35 feet or less, and the National Park Service recommends D Loop for larger RVs. Traffic on I-95, I-495, and Route 29 is heavy during weekday commutes, so plan arrivals for mid-morning or after 7 p.m. Cell coverage is strong throughout the area, but tree cover at wooded sites can weaken signal.

On RVezy, you'll typically see travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs from $250 to $400. Because Calverton sits in the DC-Baltimore corridor, midweek bookings (Sunday through Thursday) often save you 20 to 30 percent over weekends. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Calverton%2C%20MarylandDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Calverton, Maryland?
For nearly every RV rental in Calverton, MD, your regular Class C driver's license is all you need. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) only requires a non-commercial Class B license for motorhomes with a gross vehicle weight rating over 26,001 pounds, and almost every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on RVezy falls well under that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license and you're set for your Maryland RV trip.
mva.maryland.gov/drivers/Pages/recreational-vehicle-info.aspxWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Calverton?
Every booking on RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can rent an RV in Calverton with real peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, which means you're not on the hook for the full repair cost of a fender bender or a minor mishap at the campsite. During checkout you choose your coverage tier (hosts don't set this, you do), and you can match it to how adventurous your Maryland RV trip is. It's substantial financial backup that makes first-time renters feel a lot more confident pulling out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Calverton RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and there's a grace period right after you book where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, your refund depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. Hosts in Calverton can't add their own cancellation rules, which keeps things consistent and predictable. Pro tip: if Mid-Atlantic weather looks dicey, message your host early. Many are flexible about shifting dates a few days so your motorhome rental Calverton trip still happens under blue skies.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Calverton?
Absolutely, and pet-friendly RV rental Calverton options are plentiful. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see every Calverton-area host who welcomes four-legged co-pilots. Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee (typically $25 to $75), which is shown right on the listing. Once you're on the road, your dog will love nearby trails at Patuxent Research Refuge in Laurel and the dog-friendly Lake Artemesia loop in College Park, both within 15 minutes of Calverton. Cherry Hill Park in College Park is one of the closest pet-welcoming campgrounds, with a fenced dog park on site. Pack a long-line leash since Maryland state parks require pets to be leashed at six feet or less.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/Pets-in-Parks.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Calverton?
Yes, RV delivery Calverton is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who don't want to drive a big rig through Beltway traffic. Many hosts will deliver, level, and fully set up your RV at your campsite, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Common delivery destinations from Calverton include Cherry Hill Park (about 10 minutes away), Greenbelt Park (15 minutes), and Patapsco Valley State Park sites (30 to 40 minutes). Delivery fees are usually based on round-trip mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on the search page to instantly see every Calverton host who offers it.
nps.gov/gree/planyourvisit/camping.htmHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive on a Calverton RV trip?
Mileage is set per listing, so you'll see the exact policy before you book. Many Calverton hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal if you're planning a longer loop. Additional miles typically run $0.35 to $0.55 each. From Calverton you're perfectly placed for a wide range of trips: Assateague Island National Seashore (about 140 miles east), Shenandoah National Park's Skyline Drive (about 95 miles west), Ocean City (140 miles east), Gettysburg (75 miles north), and Virginia Beach (210 miles south). Pro tip: estimate your total miles before booking and message the host if you'd like a custom mileage add-on.
nps.gov/asis/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Calverton, MD?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Calverton. Cherry Hill Park in College Park (10 minutes south) is a Good Sam top-rated park with full hookups, a pool, and shuttle service to the DC Metro. Greenbelt Park (a National Park Service campground 15 minutes east) offers wooded sites with no hookups but unbeatable proximity to the Smithsonian. Duncan's Family Campground in Lothian (35 minutes southeast) is a classic Chesapeake-area spot. Patapsco Valley State Park's Hollofield Area near Ellicott City (about 30 minutes north) has 73 sites along the river. Pro tip: book Cherry Hill at least 60 days ahead for spring and fall weekends, which sell out fast thanks to its DC access.
nps.gov/gree/planyourvisit/campground.htmWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Calverton?
Calverton sits in a humid subtropical climate, and the sweet spot is mid-April through early June and again from mid-September through late October, when daytime highs sit comfortably between 65 and 78°F and humidity drops noticeably. Summers (July through August) regularly hit 88 to 95°F with high humidity, so you'll want a rental with strong air conditioning. Winters are mild compared to the northeast, with January lows around 25°F and occasional snow, which means a winter RV trip is genuinely doable if you choose a four-season rig. Pro tip: October weekends time perfectly with Maryland's renowned fall foliage in the Catoctin Mountains, just 60 miles northwest.
weather.gov/lwx/climateI've never rented an RV before. Will I really be okay?
You'll be in great shape, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering how to operate the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, and dump valves, and you'll leave with their phone number for any question that pops up mid-trip. You can also message your host straight from the listing before you book to ask anything at all. Calverton hosts are used to first-timers heading to nearby spots like Greenbelt Park, where the driving is easy and the campsite setup is straightforward. Pro tip: book a Class C motorhome or a delivered travel trailer for your first trip. Both are forgiving and let you focus on the fun.
nps.gov/subjects/camping/index.htmWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're covered. Every RV rental in Calverton, MD includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or mechanical issue is a single phone call away from help, day or night. RVezy's support team is also available before, during, and after your trip if you need someone in your corner. Most Calverton hosts pick up the phone too, and they're often the fastest way to troubleshoot something small like a tripped breaker or a finicky slide-out. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN, license plate, and the host's contact info before you pull out of the driveway so everything's ready if you ever need to call for help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Calverton RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is one of the best perks of an RV road trip from Calverton. Maryland's geography puts you within a few hours of Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and DC, all on coverage included with your RVezy booking. Cross-border travel to Canada may also be permitted, but it depends on the individual host and their insurance, so message the host directly from the listing to confirm before you book a longer trip. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Popular multi-state loops from Calverton include the Shenandoah-Skyline Drive run and the Outer Banks coastal route through Virginia and North Carolina.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for?
Plan smart and fuel won't sneak up on you. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 mpg, and tow vehicles pulling a travel trailer or fifth wheel typically 9 to 13 mpg. Maryland gas prices generally track 5 to 15 cents above the national average, and you'll find competitive prices at Wawa, Costco in Beltsville (5 minutes from Calverton), and the Sheetz off I-95 in Laurel. Pro tip: for a 3-night trip to Assateague (about 300 miles round-trip) in a Class C, budget roughly $110 to $130 in fuel based on current Maryland prices. Diesel rigs go further per gallon but the fuel itself runs higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Calverton?
For the best sites, book early. Maryland State Parks like Patapsco Valley, Greenbrier, and Cunningham Falls open reservations through ReserveAmerica up to 12 months ahead, and prime summer and fall weekends fill within days of opening. National Park Service campgrounds like Greenbelt Park and Assateague Island use Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling window. Private parks like Cherry Hill Park in College Park typically take reservations 12 months out and sell out months ahead for holiday weekends. Pro tip: for a spontaneous Calverton RV trip, target Sunday-through-Thursday nights or look at private parks, which often have last-minute openings even when state parks are booked solid.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are driving conditions like around Calverton?
Calverton sits right between I-95 and the Capital Beltway (I-495), so a little planning makes driving an RV here genuinely easy. Aim to pick up your rental mid-morning or early afternoon to avoid the 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. rush hours, especially heading into DC. Stick to I-95, US-29, and the ICC (MD-200) which all comfortably accommodate larger rigs. Avoid the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (MD-295) in a motorhome since commercial vehicles are restricted, and watch low clearances on older parkways like Rock Creek. Pro tip: if Beltway traffic makes you nervous, choose RV delivery Calverton and let your host handle the driving while you head straight to camp.
roads.maryland.gov/Index.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Calverton?
Calverton-area campgrounds run the full range. Full-hookup parks like Cherry Hill Park and Duncan's Family Campground include 30/50-amp electric, city water, sewer at the site, free Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. State park campgrounds like Patapsco Valley offer electric-only sites with shared water spigots and centrally located dump stations. National Park Service sites at Greenbelt Park are no-hookup but have potable water fills and a dump station near the entrance. For dumping or refilling water mid-trip, the Cherry Hill Park dump station is open to non-guests for a small fee, as is the Flying J in Jessup off I-95. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground since highway rest areas in Maryland don't offer RV water fills.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/central/Patapsco.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Calverton?
More than you'd expect. Most Calverton RV rentals come with a real queen or king bed, a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware, and dishes, and a wet or dry bathroom with a shower and toilet. Class C motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 7 with seatbelted travel seats for everyone on the road. Class A coaches add larger living spaces, slide-outs, and often a flat-screen TV, while campervans (Class B) trade space for incredible drivability. Many hosts include a generator for boondocking, and some throw in Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor chairs, and even bikes. Pro tip: each listing has an amenities checklist, so filter by sleeps count and must-haves like generator or pet-friendly before you book.
rvia.org/news-insights/rv-typesWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Calverton RV rental?
Hosts in Calverton offer a great range of add-ons that turn a good trip into a great one. Common extras include camp chairs and table sets ($15 to $30), outdoor grills ($20 to $40), bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), generator use for boondocking, kayaks and bikes (often $25 to $50 per day), Wi-Fi hotspots, and pre-trip propane fills. Many hosts also offer pickup and drop-off flexibility, including delivery to BWI Airport (about 20 minutes from Calverton) if you're flying in for your family RV trip Calverton style. Pro tip: bundle a few add-ons with a delivered setup and you'll roll into camp ready to enjoy yourself in under 10 minutes.
bwiairport.com/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, and your funds are processed securely so both you and the host are protected. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig, and it's released a few days after drop-off assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. The exact deposit is shown on every listing before you book, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: do a thorough walk-around with your host at pickup, take time-stamped photos of any existing scuffs, and you'll breeze through the return for your campervan rental Calverton trip with the full deposit refunded.
