Campgrounds near Cambridge, Maryland
Cambridge sits on the Choptank River on Maryland's Eastern Shore, in Dorchester County. It works as a base for RV travelers exploring the Chesapeake Bay tidewater, the Nanticoke River, and the marshlands south of town. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1933 as a refuge for migratory birds, lies about 12 miles south of Cambridge and protects a mix of tidal marsh, mixed hardwood and loblolly pine forest, managed freshwater wetlands, and croplands.
Campground options in the area mix private waterfront parks with a nearby state park. Taylors Island Family Campgrounds sits directly on the Chesapeake Bay southwest of Cambridge. Sandy Hill Family Camp and Roaring Point Waterfront Campground both sit on the Nanticoke River to the southeast, offering electric and water hookups and river access. Camp Todd, a Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay property on Lake Williston in Denton, hosts group bookings and youth programs.
For a state-run option, Martinak State Park in Denton lies about 25 miles north of Cambridge and is the closest Maryland state park with RV sites, reservable through the Maryland state parks system.
Things to do near Cambridge
Wildlife viewing and paddling dominate the local itinerary. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge features a four-mile Wildlife Drive that can be traveled by vehicle, bicycle, or foot, with pull-offs, an elevated observation platform, a photo blind, and connecting trails. The adjacent Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park adds a history stop that pairs well with a refuge visit.
On the water, the Choptank and Nanticoke rivers support fishing, crabbing, and kayaking. Anglers at Martinak State Park cast for bass, sunfish, perch, and catfish from the shoreline, pier, or a rented canoe, and a boat launch gives paddlers direct river access. Roaring Point Waterfront Campground and Sandy Hill Family Camp both offer beach access and boat ramps for guests bringing their own craft.

The camping season on the Eastern Shore runs primarily spring through fall. Roaring Point Waterfront Campground is open April through November. Sandy Hill Family Camp is open April 1 through December 15. Private parks in the region typically wind down services in late fall, though a handful hold limited sites open longer.
Martinak State Park operates for RV camping through much of the year, but the Maryland state parks system concentrates full amenities and staffed programs from late spring through fall. Bookings peak in summer, and holiday weekends fill first. Spring brings shad and striper runs on the Choptank and heavy songbird migration through Blackwater. Fall waterfowl migration ramps up in October and November, drawing birders and hunters.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity around September. Low-lying marsh roads near Blackwater and Taylors Island can flood on high tides after coastal storms, so travelers should check road conditions before arriving.
How to book campgrounds near Cambridge
Martinak State Park reservations go through the Maryland state parks booking system at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Campsites can be reserved up to one year in advance, a camping party is limited to no more than six people, and only two camping units are allowed per site. The park has 63 sites divided into two loops, about 30 carry 30-amp electric hookups in Loop B, and sewer and water hookups are not available at individual sites, though potable water and a dump station serve the campground.
Private parks handle bookings directly. Roaring Point Waterfront Campground, Sandy Hill Family Camp, and Taylors Island Family Campgrounds accept phone reservations and offer online booking through their websites or third-party platforms. Camp Todd reservations run through Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay and are generally arranged for groups rather than individual RV sites.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Cambridge is flat and low-lying, with sandy soil and heavy tree cover in the interior giving way to open marsh near the bay. Sites at the waterfront private parks tend to be sunny, while Martinak State Park sites are largely shaded. Martinak can accommodate larger rigs, with reports of 50-foot fifth wheels fitting in select sites, though a few tight turns favor careful maneuvering.
Expect biting insects from late spring through early fall, especially mosquitoes and greenhead flies near the marsh. Bring repellent and screens. Cell coverage varies by carrier and drops in pockets near Blackwater and Taylors Island.
Swimming rules differ by site. Swimming is not permitted in the Choptank River or Watts Creek at Martinak State Park, though boating and fishing are available. Sandy Hill and Roaring Point maintain designated swimming beaches on the Nanticoke.

Yes, RV delivery in Cambridge is a game-changer, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Popular delivery spots include Taylors Island Family Campground, Lake Somerset Family Campground in nearby Westover, and Janes Island State Park. Just use the 'Delivery' filter when searching and message the host for an exact delivery quote based on mileage. dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/Camping.aspxWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Cambridge, MD?
Cambridge shines from mid-April through late October. Spring (April to June) brings highs of 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and the famous shorebird migrations at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Summer (July to August) is warm and humid with highs in the mid-80s, perfect for swimming and crabbing but pack the AC. Fall (September to October) is the local secret: comfortable 70-degree days, fewer mosquitoes, and stunning marsh colors. Winters are mild but chilly (30s to low 50s) and some campgrounds close. Pro tip: book a campervan rental in Cambridge for the Cambridge Classic Powerboat Regatta in July or the Eagle Festival in March.
weather.gov/akq/I've never rented an RV before. Will I know how to use everything?
You won't be left guessing. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the propane, water, electrical hookups, slide-outs, generator, and the quirks of their specific motorhome rental in Cambridge. They'll share their cell number so you can text questions mid-trip ('How do I dump the gray tank?' is the classic), and RVezy's 24/7 support team is always one tap away in the app. First time renting an RV? Choose a smaller Class C or travel trailer, and consider a host who offers delivery so the rig is fully set up before you arrive. You've got this, and Cambridge's flat, easy roads are forgiving for beginners.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Cambridge trip?
Take a breath: you're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Just call the number in your booking confirmation and help is dispatched to your location, whether you're on Route 50 heading toward Ocean City or down a quiet road near Hoopers Island. RVezy's support team is also reachable around the clock to coordinate with your host and keep your trip on track. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you can share details quickly if you ever need to call for help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Cambridge RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, hitting the road across state lines is part of the fun. From Cambridge, you can easily explore Delaware (Rehoboth Beach is 75 miles), Virginia (Chincoteague is 95 miles), Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and beyond, all standard on RVezy rentals. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host's listing and protection requirements, so message them directly through the listing before booking to confirm. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental, as protection coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a popular multi-state loop from Cambridge is Assateague Island, then Cape Henlopen, then Cape May via the ferry, three states in one week.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel economy and gas costs should I budget for?
Budgeting is easy because Cambridge has flat terrain and short distances between attractions. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C, 15 to 20 MPG for Class B campervans, and 12 to 16 MPG combined for trucks towing travel trailers. Maryland gas prices typically run a bit above the national average; check current pump prices around US-50 and Route 16 before fueling up. For a 4-day Cambridge RV trip with side trips to Blackwater and Ocean City (about 250 to 350 miles total), most renters spend $120 to $250 on fuel. Pro tip: top off in Cambridge proper, prices spike closer to the beach towns.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Cambridge?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the prettiest sites. Maryland State Parks like Martinak and Janes Island open reservations up to 12 months in advance through the Maryland Park Service reservation system, and summer weekends, especially July 4th and Labor Day, fill within hours. Private parks like Taylors Island Family Campground and Madison Bay typically take bookings 3 to 6 months ahead. For shoulder-season trips in May or October, 4 to 6 weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Pro tip: if you find a host with RV delivery, ask them which campgrounds they frequently service, they often have insider intel on which loops have the best water views.
parkreservations.maryland.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Cambridge, MD?
Driving an RV around Cambridge is refreshingly easy. The Eastern Shore is famously flat, with wide, straight roads like US-50 and MD-16, low traffic outside summer weekends, and almost no mountain grades to worry about. The one consideration is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (US-50) heading west to Annapolis, it's a 4.3-mile span with strong crosswinds; check the Bay Bridge wind advisory before crossing in a tall Class A. Coastal flooding can occasionally affect low-lying roads near Hoopers Island after big storms. Pro tip: avoid westbound Bay Bridge traffic on Sunday afternoons in summer by leaving Cambridge before 11 a.m. or after 8 p.m.
mdta.maryland.gov/Toll_Facilities/CBB.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Cambridge?
Cambridge-area campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Most private parks (Taylors Island, Madison Bay, Lake Somerset) offer full hookups with 30/50-amp electric, fresh water, sewer, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and dump stations. Maryland State Parks like Janes Island and Martinak offer electric and water at most sites plus centralized dump stations and bathhouses, though full hookups are limited. You can top off potable water at any campground host station, and several Cambridge-area marinas have public dump stations for a small fee. Pro tip: ask your host whether the RV's fresh tank is filled at pickup, it usually is, which means you can boondock the first night without hunting for water.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/CampingFAQ.aspxWhat's typically included inside the RV?
You're rolling into Cambridge with a home on wheels. Most RVezy rentals come fully equipped: queen or king beds, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink, cookware and dishes, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette seating, climate control, and seatbelts for traveling passengers. Many hosts also include a TV, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and a propane grill. Wi-Fi and onboard generators vary by listing, so check each listing's amenities section, especially if you're working remotely from Cambridge Creek. Class B campervans are more compact (wet bath, smaller galley) while Class A and Class C rigs feel more like apartments. Pro tip: filter by 'Sleeps 6+' for a family RV trip in Cambridge with room to spread out.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cambridge%2C+MarylandWhat add-ons and mileage policies should I look for when booking?
RVezy hosts in Cambridge offer thoughtful add-ons that can simplify your trip: delivery and setup, generator hours, propane refills, linens and kitchen kits, bike racks, kayak racks (a big win on the Choptank River), outdoor grills, and even pre-stocked groceries. Mileage policies vary, some hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, while others advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage, ideal for a Cambridge to Ocean City to Assateague loop. Pickup is usually at the host's address, though delivery to your campground or rental home is widely available. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a kayak rack, you'll launch straight from Gerry Boyle Park at Great Marsh into the river within minutes.
visitmaryland.org/article/eastern-shore-water-trailsHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, no cash and no awkward handoffs. You pay by credit or debit card when you book, and your payment is processed securely through RVezy. A refundable security deposit is authorized on your card before pickup (the amount is set per listing and shown before you book) and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape and within any mileage and generator limits. To avoid surprises: do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup, take date-stamped photos, refill propane and fuel before drop-off, and dump the tanks if your agreement requires it. Pro tip: keep all receipts and messages in your RVezy chat thread, it's the cleanest paper trail.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV overnight in Cambridge if I'm not at a campground?
You have options beyond campgrounds. In Cambridge, the Walmart on Sunburst Highway has historically allowed overnight RV parking with a quick courtesy call to the manager, a classic free option for travelers in transit. Cracker Barrel locations in nearby Easton and Salisbury also welcome RV overnighters. For longer stays, harbor hosts on RVezy sometimes allow you to keep the rig on their property between adventures. Street parking overnight in residential Cambridge is generally not permitted, and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge does not allow overnight RV stays. Pro tip: if you're planning a one-nighter en route to Ocean City, Madison Bay Marina sometimes has last-minute waterfront sites, call ahead and you might score a sunset view.
