Campgrounds near Capitol Heights
Capitol Heights sits just inside the Capital Beltway in Prince George's County, Maryland, minutes from the District of Columbia line. RV travelers use it as a base for exploring the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, and Anacostia parkland while sleeping at campgrounds set back in wooded areas outside the city.
The closest option is Greenbelt Park Campground, an urban oasis about 10 miles (16 km) from Washington, D.C., run by the National Park Service. Cherry Hill Park is located in College Park, Maryland, in Prince George's County, and markets itself as a full-service RV resort close to the capital. Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday round out the private options in the corridor.
For a quieter, more forested stay, Cedarville State Forest - Family lies south in Charles County. The state forest spans more than 3,700 acres, contains the headwaters of Zekiah Swamp, and offers camping, picnic areas, and roughly 19.5 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, providing a state-park alternative to the busier private resorts along the Beltway.
Things to do near Capitol Heights
Sightseeing in Washington, D.C. is the main draw. From Greenbelt Park Campground, downtown is reachable by Metro: the Greenbelt Station is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the park, and the Green Line runs to the National Mall. Cherry Hill Park runs shuttle service and organized tours into the city, which helps families avoid downtown parking.
On-site amenities vary widely. The private resorts, including Cherry Hill Park, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC, and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday, offer full hookups, pools, and family features such as splash pads, mini golf, and dog parks in warmer months. Greenbelt Park Campground keeps things simple with wooded loops, a dump station, and hiking trails.
Further afield, Cedarville State Forest - Family has hiking trails, a stocked fishing pond, and hunting land, and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center sits close to Greenbelt for a free visitor-center stop.

Greenbelt Park Campground takes reservations year-round through Recreation.gov, with a rolling 6-month booking window. Cherry Hill Park, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC, and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday also operate year-round, though pool and splash-pad amenities are limited to warm months.

Spring brings National Cherry Blossom Festival crowds and heavy weekend demand at every park within Beltway range. Summer is hot, humid, and thunderstorm-prone. Fall delivers the most comfortable camping weather and lower midweek demand. Winter is workable for hard-sided RVs at the private parks and at Greenbelt, though state forest sites close for the season. A tick advisory applies to the Mid-Atlantic in spring and summer, so repellent and daily checks are recommended.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

Both VANessa and Vanessa were awesome. All the amenities are thoughtfully available. Van drove well and my son and I had a trip we’ll talk about for years and remember forever. Vanessa is a great communicator and great person. 5+ stars.

Had an amazing travel experience with VANessa and Vanessa was a joy to work with. So very accommodating. The van is beautiful and has everything you could want. Even my pup Seamus gave it two paws up!

How to book
Reservation systems differ by operator. Greenbelt Park Campground is federal: campsites must be booked in advance or upon arrival through the Recreation.gov website or call center at 1-877-444-6777, and the 6-month rolling window applies. Payment is not accepted on site. Cherry Hill Park, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC, and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines, and pull-through and full-hookup sites go first for peak-season weekends.
Cedarville State Forest - Family uses the Maryland Park Service system. Reservations can be made by calling 1-888-432-2267, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Campers are limited to 14 cumulative nights of camping in Maryland State Park campgrounds during any 21-day period.
What to expect
Expect a mix of resort-style parks and quieter forested campgrounds within a short drive of Capitol Heights. Full hookups, laundry, and camp stores are standard at the private resorts. Greenbelt Park Campground has paved roads and parking spurs, flush toilets, drinking water, showers, and a dump station, with each site providing a picnic table and fire ring. Alcohol is not permitted in the campground at Greenbelt.
Rig-size limits matter. The narrow camp road at Cedarville State Forest - Family has a 35-foot length limit for RVs, with electric hookups on the inner loop and primitive tent sites on the outer loop. At Greenbelt, RV length limits are given site by site on Recreation.gov, and the National Park Service recommends D Loop for larger rigs.
Traffic on I-95, I-495, and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway is heavy at rush hour, so plan arrivals and Metro trips outside peak commuting windows.
