Campgrounds near Chesapeake Beach
Chesapeake Beach sits on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay in Calvert County, Maryland, roughly 30 miles southeast of Washington, D.C. The town is known for its waterfront boardwalk, charter fishing fleet, water park, and the Chesapeake Beach Rail Trail, making it a compact base for RV travelers who want bay access with day-trip range to the capital region.
Dedicated RV campgrounds inside the town limits are limited, so most renters stage at parks within an hour's drive. Options include Cedarville State Forest - Family in nearby Brandywine, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday to the west, Greenbelt Park Campground north of D.C., and Taylors Island Family Campgrounds across the bay on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
The mix covers a wide range of trip styles. State forest sites lean rustic and quiet, KOA and Adventure Bound properties offer full hookups and family amenities, and Taylors Island puts renters on the bay near Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.
Things to do around Chesapeake Beach
The waterfront is the main draw. Families use the boardwalk, the town beach at North Beach, and Breezy Point Beach for swimming, and the local marinas run charter trips for striped bass, bluefish, and Spanish mackerel in season. The Chesapeake Beach Rail Trail is a flat, paved path suitable for kids on bikes.
Inland, Cedarville State Forest offers roughly 19 miles of trails and a fishing pond at the headwaters of Zekiah Swamp. RV renters staging at Greenbelt Park Campground or the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday can combine camp nights with trips into D.C. for the Smithsonian museums, the National Mall, and the National Zoo. Calvert Cliffs State Park, south along the bay, is a popular half-day trip for fossil hunting along the beach.

Summer is the peak RV season on the bay. June through August brings warm water, active charter fishing, and the busiest weekends at the water park and beaches. Sites at private parks and at Greenbelt fill early for July 4th and Labor Day, and Maryland state park campgrounds impose a two-night minimum from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day and a three-night minimum on holiday weekends.
Spring and fall are quieter and often more comfortable for touring. April and May bring mild days, blooming hardwoods, and lower humidity, while September and October deliver crisp mornings, fall color inland, and continued fishing. Cedarville State Forest's campground operates from April through October and is closed the rest of the year.
Winter trips are possible but limited. Some private RV parks in the region stay open with reduced services, while state park facilities scale back significantly.

Great host will consider using though with would select a smaller less luxurious vehicle. Was an excellent first-time experience.

The RV was everything we hoped for, it was spacious and well maintained. Kimberly was wonderful to work with, very responsive. Thank you for allowing us to rent your beautiful RV.

Good rental experience with this RV and also with the host, Oscar. Had a couple of Qs during the trip, and he responded quickly. Nice little travel trailer, fully stocked. Oscar provides an anti-sway trailer hitch, which increases travel & towing safety.
William P. - Jun 2025
Oscar was great! He walked me through everything and helped me get the trailer connected to the truck. The trailer was clean and everything we ran was functional (did not use the AC). Upon return the family was very responsive when I called when I dropped off the trailer. I would definitely rent from Oscar and family again!

How to book
Maryland state park campgrounds, including Cedarville State Forest, are reserved through the state's system at parkreservations.maryland.gov or by phone at 1-888-432-2267, Monday through Friday. Reservations are strongly recommended for summer weekends, and the state limits campers to 14 cumulative nights in state park campgrounds within any 21-day period.
Greenbelt Park Campground is operated by the National Park Service and books through Recreation.gov up to six months in advance. KOA and Adventure Bound properties use their own booking platforms and typically release inventory further out, which helps for holiday weekends. Taylors Island Family Campgrounds handles reservations directly.
For peak summer dates, plan to book two to three months out for private parks and as soon as the booking window opens for Cedarville and Greenbelt.
What to expect
Campground styles vary widely in the area. Cedarville State Forest offers a family loop with electric sites on the inner ring and primitive sites on the outer ring, a central bathhouse, picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern posts at each site. The equestrian loop requires a horse to stay.
Private parks such as the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday and Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC provide full hookups, pool access, playgrounds, and family programming, and they cater to larger Class A and Class C rigs. Greenbelt Park Campground is a wooded NPS site with flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station, but no hookups.
Expect summer humidity, mosquitoes near wooded and marsh sites, and occasional afternoon thunderstorms. Bay-area sites can be breezy, which helps with bugs but requires attention to awnings.

You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy confirms your ID right through the platform during booking, so there's no awkward in-person paperwork shuffle. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association (usually under $25). First time renting an RV? Your host walks you through every system at pickup, so you're never guessing.
mva.maryland.gov/drivers/Pages/default.aspxIs my RV rental in Chesapeake Beach protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Chesapeake Beach includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out toward the bay with peace of mind. You (not the host) choose your coverage level during checkout, picking the tier that fits your trip and comfort level. Booking an RV in Chesapeake Beach is low risk. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy across the platform, and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates without second-guessing. The exact refund terms depend on how far out your trip is and the circumstances, and the full details are on RVezy's Help Center. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on my Chesapeake Beach RV trip?
Absolutely, plenty of dogs love the bay breeze. A pet-friendly RV rental in Chesapeake Beach is easy to find using the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy, which surfaces only listings where the host welcomes pets. Once you arrive, your pup can join you on the Chesapeake Beach Railway Trail, a leashed paved path through town. Breezy Point Beach in nearby Dunkirk also has a designated pet section. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet specifics like size limits or extra cleaning fees, and bring a towel for sandy paws after bayside walks.
calvertcountymd.gov/268/Breezy-Point-Beach-CampgroundCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Chesapeake Beach?
Yes, RV delivery in Chesapeake Beach is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game changer if you are nervous about towing or driving a large rig down Route 260. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer right at Breezy Point Beach Campground, a nearby state park, or a private driveway, then walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer this service, and check each listing for the delivery radius and fee. Pro tip: delivery pairs perfectly with first-time renters who just want to arrive, unpack, and start eating crab cakes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chesapeake%20Beach%2C%20MarylandHow far can I drive on a Chesapeake Beach RV rental?
You can roam plenty. Many RVezy hosts in Chesapeake Beach include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for an RV road trip from Chesapeake Beach down the Delmarva Peninsula. Real distances from town: Washington, DC is about 35 miles (1 hour), Annapolis 30 miles (45 minutes), Assateague Island National Seashore 130 miles (2.5 hours), Ocean City 125 miles (2.5 hours), and Colonial Williamsburg, VA 165 miles (3 hours). Each listing clearly shows the mileage policy and any per-mile overage rate before you book. Pro tip: estimate your route in advance and pick a mileage package that fits, you will usually save versus paying overage fees.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106554-Understanding-mileage-and-generator-usageWhere can I camp with an RV near Chesapeake Beach?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping in Chesapeake Beach. Top picks within 30 minutes: Breezy Point Beach & Campground (bayfront sites with private beach, run by Calvert County), Patuxent River Campground in Upper Marlboro (quiet, wooded), and Cedarville State Forest (rustic sites about 35 minutes inland). For full hookups, Duncan's Family Campground in Lothian is 25 minutes north, and Cherry Hill Park near College Park is the closest large resort-style park (about 45 minutes). These are some of the best campgrounds near Chesapeake Beach for first-timers because of paved pads and easy bay access. Pro tip: Breezy Point books up fast for summer weekends, reserve as soon as the county opens its season (typically March).
calvertcountymd.gov/268/Breezy-Point-Beach-CampgroundWhen is the best time for a Chesapeake Beach RV trip?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for a Chesapeake Beach RV trip, with the sweet spot being May, June, September, and early October. Summer highs in July and August typically reach the upper 80s Fahrenheit with high humidity and frequent afternoon thunderstorms rolling in off the bay, so the shoulder seasons feel much more comfortable. Spring brings the Railway Trail gardens to life, and fall offers crisp days plus rockfish charter season at Rod 'N' Reel Marina. Winters are mild but damp. Pro tip: book a September trip to catch warm bay water, smaller crowds, and peak blue crab feasts.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Chesapeake Beach?
You will do great. Chesapeake Beach is a small bayside town with wide, low-traffic roads (Route 260 and Route 261 are the main arteries), making it one of the friendlier spots in the DC metro region for a first time renting an RV. Your host walks you through driving, hookups, slide-outs, and the dump station at pickup, so nothing is a mystery. If you would rather skip driving altogether, filter for hosts who deliver. RVezy support is also available if you have questions during your trip. Pro tip: avoid I-495 (the Capital Beltway) during weekday rush hour, take Route 4 south from DC instead for a calmer drive into Chesapeake Beach.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003049794-For-RentersWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Chesapeake Beach RV trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on Route 4 or have an issue at Breezy Point, one phone call gets help dispatched. Roadside assistance handles common issues like tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, and towing. For RV-specific questions (how to reset the inverter, where the water pump switch is), your host is just a message away through the RVezy app, and most local hosts respond quickly. Pro tip: snap photos of your RV's key system labels during the walkthrough so you can describe issues quickly if you ever need help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Chesapeake Beach RV rental to other states or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome, and Chesapeake Beach is a great launchpad. Popular RV road trip from Chesapeake Beach routes include Assateague Island (wild ponies, 2.5 hours east), Shenandoah National Park (3 hours west), the Outer Banks of North Carolina (5 hours south), and Gettysburg, PA (2.5 hours north). Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed on many listings but depends on the host and the protection coverage, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: if you are eyeing a one-way trip, ask the host directly through the listing, some accommodate it for an extra fee.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I expect?
Budgeting fuel for a Chesapeake Beach RV trip is straightforward. Realistic mileage: Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, Class A rigs 6 to 10 MPG, and tow setups (truck plus travel trailer) about 10 to 14 MPG. Maryland gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, hovering around $3.20 to $3.60 per gallon for regular and a touch higher for diesel. Fill up off Route 4 in Dunkirk or Sunderland (slightly cheaper than the bayfront stations) before you head south on a Solomons Island day trip. Pro tip: a weekend trip from Chesapeake Beach to Assateague and back averages $80 to $140 in fuel for a Class C.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Chesapeake Beach?
Earlier is better, especially for bayfront sites. Breezy Point Beach & Campground (run by Calvert County Parks & Recreation) opens reservations in early spring and fills summer weekends within weeks. Maryland state parks like Cedarville State Forest and Smallwood State Park take reservations through ReserveAmerica up to a year in advance. For private parks like Duncan's Family Campground, book 2 to 3 months ahead for July and August. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) are the toughest, so lock those in by February or March. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) are dramatically easier to score and often $10 to $20 per night cheaper.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/reservations.aspxWhat are the driving conditions like around Chesapeake Beach?
Driving around Chesapeake Beach is genuinely manageable. The town sits on rolling bayside terrain with two-lane state roads (Route 260 and 261) connecting to Route 4, which is the four-lane highway into Prince Frederick and up toward DC. There are no mountain passes or extreme grades, but watch for occasional low-hanging trees on the back roads near the bay cliffs and stay alert for deer at dawn and dusk in Calvert County. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge (US-50 east to the Eastern Shore) has a 13-foot height limit and can get windy, check Maryland 511 before crossing in storms. Pro tip: avoid the Bay Bridge eastbound Friday afternoons in summer, beach traffic backs up for miles.
chart.maryland.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at Chesapeake Beach campgrounds?
You'll find solid amenities at most campgrounds near Chesapeake Beach. Breezy Point Beach & Campground offers electric and water hookups at most sites plus a dump station on-site, with the bay literally steps away. Duncan's Family Campground in Lothian has full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, a pool, and a camp store. Cedarville State Forest is more rustic (electric only at select loops, central dump station). For fresh water fills and dump stations between trips, the Calvert County Recycling Center and several private parks in Prince Frederick are convenient. Pro tip: confirm amp service (30 vs 50) with your host before pickup so you bring the right adapter for your specific site.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/southern/Cedarville.aspxWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Chesapeake Beach?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental in Chesapeake Beach comes with a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stovetop, microwave, often an oven), a bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 4 to 8 people, air conditioning, a furnace, fresh and gray water tanks, and seatbelted travel seats. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays. Wi-Fi hotspots and bedding packages are popular add-ons hosts list on RVezy. A campervan rental in Chesapeake Beach is more compact but still includes a small kitchen and sleeping area, perfect for couples. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and amenities (like generator) so your shortlist matches your family RV trip in Chesapeake Beach.
nps.gov/articles/000/rv-camping.htmWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
Lots of choice. Common add-ons on RVezy listings in Chesapeake Beach include bedding and linens ($25 to $75 per trip), kitchen kits, generators ($10 to $30 per day), bike racks, kayaks (great for paddling Fishing Creek), and Wi-Fi hotspots. Mileage policies vary: many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with overage at $0.30 to $0.50 per mile, and some offer unlimited mileage packages. Pickup is usually at the host's home (often in Chesapeake Beach, Dunkirk, Prince Frederick, or nearby Owings), or you can arrange delivery to your campground. Pro tip: bundling delivery, generator, and a bedding package often costs less than people expect and saves a Walmart run before your trip.
calvertcountymd.gov/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your trip protected. A security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before the trip, with the amount displayed on the listing before you book. As long as the RV comes back in the condition it left, with the tanks and fuel handled per the host's instructions, the hold is released after your trip. Avoid issues by completing the pre- and post-trip walkthrough with photos and timestamps directly in the RVezy app. Pro tip: review the host's fuel, mileage, and dump-station policy at pickup, those three items account for most deposit surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for first-time visitors to Chesapeake Beach?
Here is the local move: head to Bay Front Park (also known as Brownies Beach) at low tide with a small mesh bag and hunt for sharks' teeth. The Calvert Cliffs along this stretch of the western Chesapeake Bay are well-known fossil grounds, and finding a Miocene-era shark tooth on your first morning makes the whole motorhome rental in Chesapeake Beach feel like an adventure. Pair it with breakfast in town and an afternoon on the Chesapeake Beach Railway Trail. Pro tip: visit within an hour of low tide after a windy night, that is when the cliffs surrender the most fossils onto the beach.
