Campgrounds and RV parks near Cresaptown, MD

Rocky Gap State Park anchors most itineraries. Lake Habeeb supports fishing, swimming, and boating, and canoe, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard rentals run spring through fall as weather and water temperature allow. The lake holds panfish, catfish, and largemouth and smallmouth bass, with trout stocked in the region. The C&O Canal towpath runs along the Potomac and is popular for cycling and walking, with Spring Gap Campground serving as a staging point for the ride into Cumberland. Green Ridge State Forest offers over 50 miles of trails, hunting by permit, and Potomac River access via a boat ramp, and its primitive sites reward campers who want solitude. Downtown Cumberland adds the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, the Allegany Museum, and the C&O Canal Cumberland Visitor Center within a short drive of most area campgrounds.

Spring brings mild days, wildflowers along the canal towpath, and stocked trout in area waters. Nights stay cold into April, and hand-pump water at C&O Canal sites, including Spring Gap, is turned on around April 15. Rain is frequent, and forest roads in Green Ridge can be soft. Summer is the peak season. Lake Habeeb swimming, boat rentals, and full campground services are all running at Rocky Gap, and weekends fill early. Humidity is high and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Spring Gap remains open through summer with its full amenities, including the seasonal hand-pump well. Fall delivers the region's best camping weather: cool nights, low humidity, and hardwood color across the ridges through mid to late October. The Spring Gap hand pump is shut off around November 1, so late-season campers should bring their own water. Winter is cold and snowy at elevation. Green Ridge stays open year-round for primitive camping, but many private campgrounds and seasonal amenities close, water systems are winterized, and mountain roads can ice. Rocky Gap's campground will be closed for renovations through 2027.

Expect a mix of developed and primitive camping. Rocky Gap Campground offers 278 individual campsites, including 30 equipped with 30 amp electric hook-ups, plus mini cabin and yurt options, along with a dump station, bathhouses with hot water in each loop, a nature center, a swimming beach, a playground, trail access, a snack shack, and a camp store. There are no full sewer hookups at the state park. Spring Gap is rustic: some sites fit only standard vehicles while others can accommodate small RVs, trailers, or pop-ups up to 20 feet in length, and pit and portable toilets are available, with hand pump water available April 15 to November 1. Green Ridge sites are primitive with a picnic table and fire ring only, and larger RVs should confirm road access before heading in. Black bears live in the region, so food and trash should be stored in the RV. Cell coverage is patchy in the valleys and forest interior.
