Campgrounds near East Riverdale, Maryland
East Riverdale sits in Prince George's County, minutes inside the Capital Beltway and roughly ten miles from downtown Washington, D.C. The area works as a base camp for families visiting the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums, and the wider D.C. metro region while sleeping in a forested campground rather than a city hotel.
The closest option is Greenbelt Park Campground, a National Park Service site with 172 campsites, hot showers, restrooms, and a dump station. It sits about 10 miles from Washington, D.C., in a wooded park known for peaceful surroundings. A short drive north puts RVers at Cherry Hill Park in College Park, a full-service private resort geared toward D.C. sightseers.
Farther out, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday in Millersville extend the range toward Annapolis and Baltimore, while Cedarville State Forest - Family sits south in Prince George's and Charles counties for a quieter, woodsier stay.
Things to do near East Riverdale
The main draw is Washington, D.C. itself: the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums, the U.S. Capitol, and the monuments are all reachable by Metro or campground shuttle. Cherry Hill Park offers buses to Metro and organizes sightseeing tours, and Greenbelt Park sits about 1.5 miles from the Greenbelt Metro Station, putting campers downtown in roughly an hour.
Closer to camp, Greenbelt Park has about ten miles of hiking trails, including the Perimeter, Azalea, Dogwood, and Blueberry Trails, plus several picnic areas. Kids can pick up a Junior Ranger booklet at the ranger station.
For a full outdoor day away from the city, Cedarville State Forest sits at the headwaters of Zekiah Swamp and offers hiking trails, a fishing pond, and equestrian routes through quiet Southern Maryland woodland.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the D.C. area. March through May brings the cherry blossoms and mild temperatures, and campgrounds close to the Metro fill quickly during peak bloom weekends. September and October offer cooler nights, lower humidity, and fall color in the region's hardwood forests.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. It is also the busiest school-break stretch for D.C. sightseeing, so private resorts near the city book out well ahead. Winter is the quietest season: cold, occasionally snowy, and less crowded, though the tourist draws in Washington remain open year-round.
Seasonal openings vary by operator. Cedarville State Forest's campground is open from April to October, with reservations by phone Monday through Friday or online 24/7 through parkreservations.maryland.gov. Greenbelt Park operates year-round with reservations required, and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday runs as a year-round base for the capital region.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

How to book a campsite near East Riverdale
Reservation systems differ by campground type. Sites at Greenbelt Park must be reserved online at Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. The campground offers year-round reservations, and bookings may be made up to six months in advance. For peak season visits, book as early as possible.
Maryland state forest sites use a separate system. Reservations for Cedarville State Forest can be made by calling 1-888-432-2267, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day there is a two-night minimum, holiday weekends require a three-night minimum, and campers are limited to 14 cumulative nights in Maryland State Park campgrounds during any 21-day period.
Private parks such as Cherry Hill Park and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday book directly through their own websites or by phone, and pull-through sites at both fill first for peak spring and summer dates.
What to expect on an RV trip near East Riverdale
Expect a mix of urban-adjacent camping and traffic. Sites this close to the Beltway trade backcountry solitude for Metro access. Greenbelt Park Campground has no water or electric hookups (primitive campground), with an RV limit of 30 feet in B Loop and limited availability for larger vehicles up to 35 feet in D Loop. The site has flush toilets, drinking water, hot showers, and a dump station.
For full hookups and resort amenities, private parks are the answer. Cherry Hill Park features full hook-up RV sites, shaded tent spaces, and glamping accommodations, along with pools, a hot tub, splash park, café, and dog park. Cedarville State Forest offers electric sites on the inner loop and primitive sites on the outer loop, with a bathhouse and hot showers.
Plan for humidity in summer, bring bug spray, and expect road noise at parks close to I-95 or the Beltway.

April through early June and mid-September through late October bring comfortable 60 to 80°F days, lower humidity, and stunning cherry blossoms or fall foliage, perfect for RV camping East Riverdale style. Summer (June to August) is warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, but the AC in modern rentals handles it easily and you'll have prime access to D.C. festivals. Winter is mild but chilly, with January lows around 25°F, so cold-weather rentals with furnaces are available year-round. Insider tip: time your visit to the National Cherry Blossom Festival in late March or early April for an unforgettable Maryland RV trip.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. Is East Riverdale a good place to start?

Many also offer delivery and setup so you can skip driving through metro traffic entirely. Start with a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan (Class B), which handles like a large van, and pick a nearby first stop like Greenbelt Park just 3 miles away so you can settle in before exploring. Pro tip: message your host beforehand with any questions, they want your trip to go well and usually respond within hours.

Plan for fuel and you'll be fine. Maryland's average gas price has hovered around $3.84 per gallon in 2026 per AAA, with the Washington D.C. metro running slightly higher near $3.91. Class B campervans typically deliver 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A motorhomes run 6 to 10 MPG. For a 500-mile loop around Maryland in a Class C, budget roughly $150 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Hagerstown or off I-95 in Howard County where prices typically run 10 to 20 cents cheaper per gallon than inside the Beltway near East Riverdale.

Private parks such as Cherry Hill Park in College Park and Washington D.C. / Capitol KOA fill 2 to 4 months ahead for peak weekends but often have weeknight openings even in summer. Watch for the Baltimore-Washington Parkway's 12-foot height limit at some tunnels and bridges, and avoid driving large RVs into downtown D.C. where streets are narrow and parking is restricted. Pro tip: use the Capital Beltway's outer loop late morning or after 8 p.m. to escape the city smoothly, and consider delivery from your host to skip metro driving entirely on day one.

As long as you return the RV in similar condition, the hold is released after the trip. Pro tip: walk through the RV with the host at pickup and dropoff and snap photos of any existing wear so the deposit return goes quickly and smoothly.
