Camping near Eckhart Mines
Eckhart Mines is an unincorporated community in Allegany County, Maryland, sitting on the Allegheny Plateau just east of Frostburg and a short drive from Cumberland. The area is elevated compared with the rest of Maryland, and RV travelers use it as a base for the Georges Creek Valley, the C&O Canal, and the Savage River watershed to the west.
Campground options within about a half-hour drive cover several styles of trip. Eagle's Nest Campground sits on the West Virginia side of the Potomac near Ridgeley and offers full-hookup RV sites. Spring Gap Campground - Chesapeake Ohio Canal National Park runs along the Potomac towpath east of Cumberland, while Sleepy Hollow Campground near Grantsville pairs RV sites with cabins. Further west, New Germany State Park and Big Run State Park sit inside the Savage River State Forest in Garrett County.
Expect mountain terrain, winding access roads on the state forest routes, and cooler summer nights than the Chesapeake side of Maryland.
Things to do around Eckhart Mines
The C&O Canal Towpath runs from Cumberland east toward Washington, and Spring Gap Campground - Chesapeake Ohio Canal National Park is a common access point for hiking and biking on the towpath, paddling, and fishing on the Potomac River. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland is a family-friendly option on rainy afternoons.
Inland, New Germany State Park offers about ten miles of multi-use trails and a small lake suitable for fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating. Big Run State Park sits at the mouth of the Savage River Reservoir and gives easy access to fishing, boating, hiking, and hunting in the surrounding Savage River State Forest, with paddlers and anglers drawn to the reservoir itself.

Elevation drives the season here. Summers are the busiest window for state park sites, with cooler temperatures than lowland Maryland thanks to the plateau setting. Biting insects are present in warm months, so RV travelers should pack accordingly.
Fall is often the strongest window for a trip. Autumn visitors get a spectacular view of the changing colors on the mountain ridges surrounding Big Run State Park, and weekend sites during peak color tend to book out quickly. Spring brings variable weather and higher water in the Savage and Potomac drainages, plus the reopening of seasonal water systems at some sites.
Winter camping is possible at several state parks but requires preparation. During winter months at New Germany State Park, campsites and driveways are not plowed and may be covered in snow and ice, so campers should be prepared to park in the day-use area and walk to the site with an overnight vehicle permit from the ranger station. Snow can be significant on the plateau, with Frostburg averaging well over 70 inches per season.
How to book campgrounds near Eckhart Mines
Maryland state parks in this region use a single reservation system. For both New Germany State Park and Big Run State Park, reservations can be made by calling 1-888-432-CAMP or by visiting parkreservations.maryland.gov, and bookings can be made up to 365 days in advance. Same-day reservations are not permitted by phone or online at Big Run, though campers without a reservation may pay on arrival for sites marked available, for one night only.
Spring Gap Campground - Chesapeake Ohio Canal National Park is administered by the National Park Service and is generally first-come, first-served, with information available through the C&O Canal park site. Private options such as Eagle's Nest Campground and Sleepy Hollow Campground are booked directly through each campground's own site.
What to expect on-site
Facilities vary widely. New Germany State Park offers a developed campground with a bathhouse, water spigots near the bathrooms, and a dump station, though individual RV sites are dry with only a couple offering electric hookups. Big Run State Park is more rustic: 29 primitive sites with vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables, and no showers or hookups, so pack in water and expect limited to no cell service.
Spring Gap Campground - Chesapeake Ohio Canal National Park is small and best suited to tents, vans, and short trailers, with no hookups. Eagle's Nest Campground on the West Virginia side is the closest full-hookup option, with water, sewer, and electric service.
Cell coverage across the Savage River State Forest is unreliable. Bring paper directions and confirm check-in windows before leaving pavement.

dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/newgermany.aspxWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from Eckhart Mines?

Spring (April-May) brings wildflowers along the Allegheny Front and fewer crowds, while late September and October deliver some of the most spectacular fall foliage on the East Coast, with vibrant color usually peaking around Columbus Day. Winters here are real, with snow and overnight lows in the 20s. Pro tip: book a leaf-peeping trip the first week of October for crisp air, golden ridges, and shoulder-season rates.
weather.gov/lwx/climateI'm a first-time renter. Will I actually be able to drive and use the RV?
Yes, and you're going to do great. First time renting an RV in Eckhart Mines feels manageable because every host provides an in-person orientation at pickup (or at delivery) that walks you through driving tips, slide-outs, water and waste systems, the generator, and the propane. You'll have the host's phone number for the whole trip, plus RVezy's 24/7 support team. Most first-timers choose a Class C motorhome or a travel trailer in the 20-25 foot range because they're easy to maneuver on local roads like Route 36 and Mt. Savage Road. Pro tip: ask the host to record a quick video walkthrough on your phone during the orientation so you can replay it at the campground.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulationsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on the road near Eckhart Mines?
You are covered. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number, your host's number, and RVezy support in your phone before you pull out of Eckhart Mines, just in case you lose cell signal up in the mountains around Frostburg.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV rental into Pennsylvania, West Virginia, or other states?
Yes, most hosts happily allow multi-state travel, which is great because Eckhart Mines sits less than 10 miles from the Pennsylvania border and about 15 miles from West Virginia. Popular RV road trip from Eckhart Mines routes include the Laurel Highlands of PA, the Monongahela National Forest in WV, Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, and the C&O Canal corridor down to DC. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, and cross-border travel into Canada is possible only with the host's prior approval. Pro tip: message the host with your planned route before booking so they can confirm and update mileage terms if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Eckhart Mines RV trip?
Plan smart and fuel won't blow your budget. Class C motorhomes in this region typically average 8-10 mpg, Class B campervans get 16-20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10-14 mpg). Gas prices in Allegany County tend to run a few cents below the Maryland state average, and you'll find cheaper fill-ups in nearby West Virginia just over the line. A typical 4-night, 300-mile loop from Eckhart Mines to Deep Creek Lake and back runs around $120-$180 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: top off in LaVale or Cumberland before heading east on I-68, where stations get sparser past Sideling Hill.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Eckhart Mines?
For the most popular spots, book early and you will lock in the best sites. Rocky Gap State Park takes reservations through the Maryland Park Reservations system, and summer weekends, especially around July 4th and Labor Day, often book up well in advance. New Germany State Park and Deep Creek Lake State Park follow the same reservation system. For shoulder-season trips in May or October, 4 to 6 weeks ahead is usually enough. Pro tip: if Rocky Gap is full, look at nearby private parks or Fifteenmile Creek Campground along the C&O Canal, which often have last-minute availability.
parkreservations.maryland.gov/What are the local driving conditions like around Eckhart Mines?
Driving here is scenic and very doable, but it pays to know the terrain. Eckhart Mines sits in the Allegheny Mountains, so I-68 east and west of town has several long, steep grades (notably Big Savage Mountain and Sideling Hill) where you'll want to downshift and use lower gears, especially in a Class C or with a trailer. Local roads like Route 36 and Mt. Savage Road are winding but well-maintained. Winter can bring snow and ice from December through March. Pro tip: check Maryland 511 for real-time road and weather conditions before you set out, and plan mountain driving for daylight hours so you can enjoy the ridge-top views around Frostburg.
chart.maryland.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Eckhart Mines?
Most campgrounds near Eckhart Mines offer the essentials and then some. Rocky Gap State Park has 30-amp electric sites in its Ash Loop, a centralized dump station, potable water fill stations, and modern bathhouses with hot showers (open year-round). New Germany State Park offers electric sites plus dump station access, while private parks like Hidden Springs and Little Orleans add full hookups (water, sewer, electric) and Wi-Fi at some sites. Cell signal is solid in town but spotty deep in the state forests. Pro tip: top off your fresh water at the campground entrance before claiming your site, and use the Rocky Gap dump station on your way out to avoid the morning checkout line.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/rockygap-camping.aspxWhat features and amenities come inside an RV rental in Eckhart Mines?
Most RVs on RVezy in this area are fully self-contained, meaning you can sleep, cook, and shower without ever leaving the rig. Expect a queen or king bed in the main bedroom, convertible dinette or bunk beds for kids, a kitchen with a fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, plus a wet or dry bathroom with a toilet and shower. Air conditioning, a propane furnace, and a TV are common, and many campervan rental Eckhart Mines listings include a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays. Seatbelt counts vary, so confirm them if you have kids. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps count and Generator if you're planning to boondock in Green Ridge State Forest.
dnr.maryland.gov/forests/Pages/greenridge/index.aspxWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Eckhart Mines?
Hosts on RVezy offer a flexible menu of add-ons that make your trip easier: linens and bedding packages, camping kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, generators, bike racks, propane fills, and even pre-stocked groceries. Mileage policies vary, with some listings offering unlimited mileage and others including 100-150 free miles per day plus a small per-mile fee after that. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or around Eckhart Mines, Frostburg, or LaVale, but many hosts offer delivery to Rocky Gap, Dan's Mountain, or your driveway. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator into one quote when you message the host so you know your true all-in cost.
visitmaryland.org/article/western-maryland-road-tripHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy in Eckhart Mines?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash to a host. When you book your RV rental in Eckhart Mines, you pay the rental total, taxes, fees, and your chosen protection plan securely online. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (the amount is shown on the listing) and is released after the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any surprises, take date-stamped photos and a short walk-around video at pickup and drop-off. Pro tip: empty the holding tanks, refill propane, and top off fuel before returning so you sidestep the most common deposit deductions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Eckhart Mines in winter, and is cold-weather camping practical?
Yes, winter RV rental in Eckhart Mines is absolutely an option. Winters in Allegany County run cold (December through February highs commonly in the 30s and 40s Fahrenheit, lows in the teens and 20s, with regular snow), so look for listings advertised as four-season with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, a reliable propane furnace, and shore-power capability. Many hosts will pre-treat tanks and top off propane for you. Rocky Gap State Park has campsites available in winter, though some amenities are seasonal, so confirm hookups and bathhouse access through the Maryland Park Reservations system before you book. Pro tip: pair a winter Eckhart Mines RV trip with a snow day at Wisp Resort near Deep Creek Lake, about 45 miles west.
