Campgrounds near Fairwood, Maryland
Fairwood sits in Prince George's County, Maryland, inside the Capital Beltway corridor between Bowie and the eastern edge of Washington, D.C. RV renters use it as a base for touring the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums, Annapolis, and Chesapeake Bay day trips, with campgrounds concentrated along the I-95 and US-50 corridors within roughly a half-hour drive.
The closest developed option is Greenbelt Park, a 174 site National Park Service campground with reservations required year-round. Private RV parks in the area include Cherry Hill Park in College Park, the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday, and Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC, all oriented toward larger rigs and full hookups.
For a quieter, more forested experience, Cedarville State Forest - Family sits south of Fairwood near Brandywine in Charles County, offering electric and primitive loops in a working state forest. Together these five properties cover the range most renters need, from urban-adjacent full-service parks to state-forest sites with basic amenities.
Things to do near Fairwood
The main draw is Washington, D.C. itself. Washington, D.C. and its famed historic sites are just 10 miles from Greenbelt, and the Washington, D.C. Metro Transit System (Greenbelt Station) is just 1.5 miles from the park, so RV renters can leave the rig at camp and ride transit downtown. Cherry Hill Park runs a seasonal shuttle service to Metro for a similar approach from College Park.
Closer to camp, Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens are 8 miles away, and Goddard Space Flight Center is 3 miles from the park. Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy are a short drive east on US-50.
At Cedarville State Forest, visitors use well-maintained hiking trails accessible from the campground, spot wildlife such as turtles and rabbits, ride horses on designated trails, and photograph birds in the forest setting.

December - February
46° / 32°F 75 mmCold rain, occasional snow; state park sites closed.
Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this region. Days are mild, humidity is manageable, and D.C. sightseeing is comfortable. Cherry blossom season in late March through early April drives heavy demand at every campground within reach of the Metro, and fall foliage in October brings a second booking peak.
Summer is hot, humid, and busy. School-holiday families fill private parks near D.C., and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Ticks are an active concern in wooded sites: there is a tick notice in the Mid-Atlantic region, and campers are advised to use repellent.
Winter narrows the options. Greenbelt Park is open year-round with reservations required, and the large private parks generally stay open, but state-run sites close for the cold months. Cedarville State Forest's Campground is open from April to October, so winter trips need to focus on the NPS site or private RV resorts.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

How to book campgrounds near Fairwood
Greenbelt Park uses the federal reservation system. The campground offers year-round reservations, and campers may book 6 months in advance through the Recreation.gov website or call center at 1-877-444-6777, and popular weekends fill quickly once the window opens.
Cedarville State Forest uses the Maryland Park Service system. Reservations can be made by calling 1-888-432-2267, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day there is a two-night minimum stay, holiday weekends require a three-night minimum, and campers are limited to 14 cumulative nights of camping in Maryland State Park campgrounds during any 21-day period.
Cherry Hill Park, the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday, and Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC take reservations directly through their own websites, and each recommends booking well ahead for cherry blossom season, summer holidays, and fall foliage weekends.
What to expect on arrival
Expect an urban-fringe camping experience. Traffic on I-95, I-495, and the BW Parkway is heavy at rush hour, so arriving mid-morning or after evening peak makes the drive easier for larger rigs. Private parks in the area cater specifically to RV renters and provide full hookups, laundry, and pool access; state and federal sites are more basic.
At Greenbelt Park, sites are wooded and forest-shaded. B Loop has 46 sites and is open to tents and RVs, though most are for smaller RVs of 35 feet or less, and RV length restrictions for each campsite are given on the Recreation.gov website. Check length limits before booking a large rental. Alcohol is not permitted in the campground.
At Cedarville, each campsite has a picnic table, fire ring with a grill, and a lantern post; sites on the inner loop are equipped with electric, and sites on the outer loop are primitive, with a bathhouse located within the center of the loop and blue water spigots throughout.

Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets a consistent cancellation policy across the platform, not the individual host. That means a predictable, renter-friendly experience whether you rent from a host in Fairwood, Bowie, or Upper Marlboro. There is a refund window shortly after booking, with clear rules if plans change closer to your trip date. Review the full cancellation policy on RVezy before you book so you know exactly what to expect. Pro tip: book early to lock in your preferred RV, then relax knowing the cancellation terms are clearly defined.

Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search, and you will see motorhomes and travel trailers from hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and ask about delivery if your dog gets anxious during pickups.
nps.gov/gree/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan a host deliver the RV to me in Fairwood?

Many local hosts will bring the RV directly to your driveway in Fairwood, to a campground like Cherry Hill Park in College Park, or to nearby Greenbelt Park. They will level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, so a drop-off within Prince George's County is typically the most affordable. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery to instantly see hosts offering this stress-free option.

Many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is a sweet deal for a longer Maryland RV rental adventure. nps.gov/gree/planyourvisit/campground.htmWhen is the best time of year for a Fairwood RV trip?
The Fairwood, MD sweet spot runs from mid-April through early June and again from mid-September through late October, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 78 degree range and humidity drops off. July and August are warm and muggy, often reaching the upper 80s with thunderstorms, but campground pools and Chesapeake Bay beaches make it worth it. Winters are mild, averaging 30 to 45 degrees, so a campervan rental Fairwood trip in December for D.C. holiday lights is totally doable with a heated rig. Pro tip: book your motorhome rental Fairwood for the second week of October, when fall colors peak along the C and O Canal.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're in great hands, and first time renting an RV in Fairwood is easier than it looks. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, slide-outs, the generator, and dump procedures, so nothing feels mysterious before you pull away. You can also message the host with questions before you even book, and RVezy customer support is available 24/7 throughout your trip. For your first trip, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer, and pick a nearby campground like Cherry Hill Park so the learning curve is short. Pro tip: take 20 minutes of video during the walkthrough so you can rewatch later when you're setting up camp.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safetyWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are stuck on I-95, the Bay Bridge, or a back road in St. Mary's County. The roadside team handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues. Your host is also typically a quick text away, since most live right in the Fairwood, Bowie, or D.C. metro area and know local mechanics. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN plate so you can share it instantly if you ever need service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Fairwood RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Absolutely, and that's one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Fairwood. You're perfectly positioned for multi-state adventures, with Virginia, Delaware, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania all within two hours. Popular routes include heading north to Acadia National Park in Maine, south to the Outer Banks in North Carolina, or west to Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed on many listings, but you'll want to confirm with the host before booking since insurance coverage varies. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: build your route around state parks rather than highway-side stops, since they're cheaper and far more scenic.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Fairwood RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it is easy to plan for. Class C motorhomes around Fairwood typically average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 15 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect 10 to 14 mpg combined. Maryland gas prices tend to track near the national average. For a 300-mile weekend loop to Assateague and back, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Bowie or Crofton before heading east, since stations along Route 50 near the beach often charge a premium in summer.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground?
Book sooner than you think. For the most popular RV camping Fairwood options, like Greenbelt Park and Cherry Hill Park, reserve three to six months ahead for summer weekends and major holidays. Maryland State Park reservations open through ReserveAmerica's MD park system, and they fill up the morning the booking window opens, especially for Assateague and Janes Island. National Park Service sites use Recreation.gov, where you can book up to six months out. Pro tip: if a holiday weekend looks fully booked, set a Recreation.gov alert for cancellations, which happen constantly two to three weeks before arrival as plans change.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Fairwood, MD?
Driving an RV around Fairwood is very manageable once you know the rhythm. Route 50 and Route 301 are wide, RV-friendly corridors that connect you to the beaches and Bay Bridge with minimal stress. The Capital Beltway (I-495) is best avoided between 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 7 PM, when traffic crawls. Watch for low clearances under 11 feet on some D.C. parkways like the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, where commercial vehicles aren't allowed. Summer brings sudden thunderstorms, so plan driving days for mornings. Pro tip: use the truck routing setting on Google Maps or apps like RV Life to automatically avoid restricted parkways, which is a lifesaver for taller motorhome rental Fairwood rigs.
roads.maryland.gov/What amenities do local campgrounds offer?
Most campgrounds near Fairwood come well-equipped for a smooth trip. Cherry Hill Park offers full hookups with 30/50 amp power, sewer, cable TV, fast Wi-Fi, a pool, and a dump station for day-use. Greenbelt Park has electric and water at many sites plus dump and potable water stations. Duncan's Family Campground includes full hookups and a fishing pond. For dumping and water fills between stops, the Maryland Welcome Centers along Route 50 and I-95 don't offer RV services, but truck stops like Pilot in Jessup do. Pro tip: top off fresh water before you leave the host's driveway in Fairwood, since some state parks only offer water at a central spigot.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/camping.aspxWhat's actually inside the RV I'll rent?
You'll be amazed how dialed-in modern RVs are. Most rentals near Fairwood include a real queen or king bed, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, plus a private bathroom with shower and toilet. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically have a flat-screen TV, awning, air conditioning, a propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for 4 to 7 passengers. Many hosts also include a generator for off-grid use and offer Wi-Fi hotspots as an add-on. Family RV trip Fairwood travelers love bunkhouse trailers with separate kids' sleeping areas. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps Count to make sure you've got a seatbelt for every passenger, which is required by Maryland law on the road.
mva.maryland.gov/safety/Pages/MarylandSafetyBelt.aspxWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts offer a great range of add-ons to customize your RV rental in Fairwood, MD experience. Common extras include bedding and linen packages, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generators, bike racks, paddleboards, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Fairwood, Bowie, Crofton, or Mitchellville, with most hosts offering delivery for an added fee. Mileage policies usually range from 100 to 150 free miles per night with a per-mile rate after that, though unlimited mileage rentals exist too. Pro tip: bundle the linens and kitchen kit when you have kids in tow, since packing for everyone in a sedan to the pickup is no fun.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fairwood%2C%20MarylandHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy. You pay the full rental amount when you book, including the protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons you have selected, all through the platform, so there is no cash exchange with your host in Fairwood. A refundable security deposit is held shortly before your trip and released after a successful return, typically within a few days. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround video at pickup and dropoff and document fuel and propane levels. Pro tip: return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels you received it, and empty the tanks if your host requires it, the single easiest way to get every dollar of your deposit back.
