Camping near Forest Heights, Maryland
Forest Heights sits just inside the Capital Beltway in Prince George's County, directly across the Potomac from Washington, D.C. That location puts RV renters within easy reach of the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, and Old Town Alexandria, while still offering wooded campgrounds a short drive from the front door.
The closest developed campground is Greenbelt Park Campground, a National Park Service site about ten miles from downtown D.C. with 172 wooded sites open year-round. For full-hookup RV camping with resort amenities, Cherry Hill Park in College Park is the nearest option and one of the most established RV parks in the D.C. area.
Campers looking for quieter, more traditional state-park settings can head south into Charles and Prince George's counties. Cedarville State Forest offers a forested loop with electric and primitive sites, Smallwood State Park sits along Mattawoman Creek with a marina and boat launch, and Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC rounds out the private-park options within the region.
Things to do near Forest Heights
Washington, D.C. is the main draw. Cherry Hill Park runs shuttle and tour service into the District, and Greenbelt Park Campground sits about 1.5 miles from the Greenbelt Metro station, so RV renters can leave the rig parked and ride into the city.
Outdoor activity is close at hand. Greenbelt Park has roughly ten miles of hiking trails, including the Perimeter, Azalea, Dogwood, and Blueberry Trails, and Cedarville State Forest offers hiking, biking, and equestrian trails along with a four-acre fishing pond near the headwaters of Zekiah Swamp.
Water-based trips work well from Smallwood State Park, which sits on Mattawoman Creek, a Potomac tributary, with a 50-slip marina, boat launch ramps, and picnic areas. Kids' amenities at Cherry Hill Park include pools, mini-golf, and a playground.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV camping around Forest Heights. Cherry blossom season in D.C. runs late March into early April and drives heavy demand at Cherry Hill Park and Greenbelt Park Campground, so sites should be locked in months ahead. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and reliable foliage into November.
Summer is peak season for families but also the hottest and most humid stretch, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Ticks are an active concern from spring through summer across Mid-Atlantic parks, and Greenbelt Park explicitly warns campers to use tick repellent.
Seasonality varies by campground. Greenbelt Park Campground is open year-round with reservations required. Cedarville State Forest's campground runs April through October, while Smallwood State Park generally operates year-round. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, Maryland state parks require a two-night minimum, and holiday weekends require three nights.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

Great host will consider using though with would select a smaller less luxurious vehicle. Was an excellent first-time experience.

What to expect on site
Expect a mix of urban-adjacent RV resorts and quieter, forested public campgrounds. Cherry Hill Park offers full hookups, pull-through and back-in sites, laundry, and shuttle access into D.C., positioning it as the closest full-service RV park to the capital.
Greenbelt Park Campground is more rustic: wooded loops with no hookups, paved roads and parking spurs, flush toilets, drinking water, showers, and a dump station. The National Park Service recommends D loop for RVs, with most B loop sites suited to smaller rigs 35 feet or less. Alcohol is not permitted in the campground, and pets are allowed.
At Cedarville State Forest, the family loop has electric sites on the inner ring and primitive sites on the outer ring, with a central bathhouse. Smallwood State Park has 18 sites with 50-amp electric and water hookups, hot showers, and a dump station, with RVs generally capped around 30 feet.
