Campgrounds near Highland, Maryland
Highland sits in central Howard County, roughly midway between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The area gives RV renters access to a mix of full-service private parks and forested state and federal campgrounds within a short drive, most within about 25 miles of town.
Cherry Hill Park in College Park is the closest full-hookup private option and one of the largest RV parks in the region, with amenities aimed at families. Ramblin' Pines, in Woodbine, offers a quieter rural setting with hookups and cabins. For a more forested experience, Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area runs seasonally along the Patapsco River corridor, and Greenbelt Park Campground is a wooded National Park Service site inside the Capital Beltway.
Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday in Millersville rounds out the shortlist with standard KOA hookups and access to both metro areas. Together these five give travelers options for hookups, tent-style camping, and easy day trips into either city.
Things to do near Highland
The Patapsco River corridor is the biggest outdoor draw close to Highland. Patapsco Valley State Park stretches along the river for more than 30 miles and offers hiking, mountain biking, fishing, tubing, and horseback trails, with scenic overlooks near the Hollofield Area and views of the historic Thomas Viaduct in the Avalon Area.
Greenbelt Park sits inside the Capital Beltway and offers about nine miles of trails, ranger programs, and Saturday campfire events, with access into Washington, D.C. by car or transit. From Cherry Hill Park, families can reach the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, and the National Zoo by public transit.
Closer to Highland itself, travelers can visit farms and wineries in the Howard County countryside, walk historic Ellicott City, or drive north to Baltimore's Inner Harbor and aquarium.

Central Maryland has four distinct seasons. Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms; it is the busiest camping stretch, and weekend sites at popular parks fill weeks ahead. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures, lower humidity, and the strongest foliage color, making them the most comfortable windows for RV travel.
State park campgrounds in the region generally operate on a seasonal calendar. The Hollofield Area at Patapsco Valley State Park typically runs from spring through late October, so travelers should confirm current status with the Maryland Park Service before booking. Shelter and pavilion reservations at Patapsco follow a similar spring-to-fall calendar.
Winters are cold enough that most tent loops and some state sites close, but private parks such as Cherry Hill Park, Ramblin' Pines, and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday operate year-round, and Greenbelt Park Campground stays open through the winter for self-contained rigs.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.
Ronald V. - Oct 2026
We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

Both VANessa and Vanessa were awesome. All the amenities are thoughtfully available. Van drove well and my son and I had a trip we’ll talk about for years and remember forever. Vanessa is a great communicator and great person. 5+ stars.

Had an amazing travel experience with VANessa and Vanessa was a joy to work with. So very accommodating. The van is beautiful and has everything you could want. Even my pup Seamus gave it two paws up!

How to book
Reservation systems vary by campground type. Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area books through the Maryland Park Service reservation portal, which generally opens a rolling booking window up to a year ahead of arrival.
Greenbelt Park Campground uses Recreation.gov, the standard National Park Service system, with a rolling six-month reservation window. All sites there must be reserved in advance online; walk-in and cash payments are no longer accepted.
Private campgrounds including Cherry Hill Park, Ramblin' Pines, and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday take reservations directly through their own websites or the KOA app. For summer weekends and holidays, book two to three months out to secure full-hookup pull-through sites suitable for larger rentals.
What to expect on arrival
Access roads to some area campgrounds can be narrow and residential. Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area has a low clearance bridge on one approach, so taller rigs should confirm the correct entrance in advance. Quiet hours are enforced at the state and federal sites.
Expect a wooded canopy at the state and national park sites, with picnic tables, fire rings, and dump station access, but no electric, water, or sewer hookups at Greenbelt Park. Cherry Hill Park and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday offer full hookups, laundry, pools, and Wi-Fi geared to longer stays.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across all five campgrounds. Aircraft noise is common near Greenbelt Park due to nearby flight paths.
