Campgrounds near Hillcrest Heights
Hillcrest Heights sits in Prince George's County just inside the Capital Beltway, which makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want to see Washington, D.C. without driving an RV into the city. The closest developed campground is Greenbelt Park Campground, a National Park Service site where reservations are required. The campground does not have water or electrical hookups at the sites, though there is water and electricity in the bathrooms. There is an RV limit of 30 feet (including tow vehicle) in B Loop and limited availability for larger vehicles up to 35 feet (including tow vehicle) in D loop.
For full-hookup RV travel, Cherry Hill Park in College Park is the closest resort-style option, with RV and tent sites plus cabins, cottages, and glamping units.
South of the city, Cedarville State Forest and Smallwood State Park offer quieter, forested state-park camping. Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC rounds out the nearby private options for families who want pools and structured activities.
Things to do near Hillcrest Heights
The main draw is proximity to Washington, D.C. and its museums, monuments, and the National Mall. The Washington, D.C. Metro Transit System (Greenbelt Station) is just 1.5 miles from Greenbelt Park, so campers can reach downtown without moving the rig. Cherry Hill Park runs its own transit connections and tours into the capital.
Activities vary by park. Cherry Hill Park offers pools, a hot tub, a splash park, sports courts, and access to the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail for cycling. Smallwood State Park sits along Mattawoman Creek and includes a 50-boat slip marina, boat launch ramps, picnic areas, pavilions, a playground, an amphitheater, and nature trails. Cedarville State Forest is one of Maryland's smaller state forests at 3,510 acres, with 19 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails.

The region has four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping, with mild temperatures and moderate rain. Summer brings heat, humidity, and thunderstorms, and it is also the peak booking season for anyone visiting Washington, D.C. Winters are cold but generally mild by northern standards, with cold rain more common than heavy snow.
Operating seasons vary by park. Greenbelt Park Campground offers year-round reservations, and campers may book six months in advance, making it the most flexible option in the shoulder and winter seasons. By contrast, Cedarville State Forest's campground is open through October, and Smallwood State Park's family campground follows a similar warm-season pattern.
Ticks and mosquitoes are worth planning for. There is a tick notice in the Mid-Atlantic region in spring and summer, so campers should take precautions such as using tick repellent.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

Both VANessa and Vanessa were awesome. All the amenities are thoughtfully available. Van drove well and my son and I had a trip we’ll talk about for years and remember forever. Vanessa is a great communicator and great person. 5+ stars.

Had an amazing travel experience with VANessa and Vanessa was a joy to work with. So very accommodating. The van is beautiful and has everything you could want. Even my pup Seamus gave it two paws up!

How to book a campground near Hillcrest Heights
Reservation systems depend on which agency runs the campground. For Greenbelt Park, campsites must be booked in advance or upon arrival using the Recreation.gov website or call center (1-877-444-6777), bookings can be made six months in advance, and payment is not accepted on site.
Maryland state parks, including Cedarville State Forest and Smallwood State Park, use a single reservation system. Reservations can be made online at parkreservations.maryland.gov or by calling 1-888-432-CAMP (2267). Sites can be booked up to a year in advance, and holiday weekends generally require a multi-night minimum stay.
Private parks such as Cherry Hill Park and Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC take direct bookings through their own websites and are the most reliable choice for large rigs needing full hookups.
What to expect at campgrounds near Hillcrest Heights
Expect two very different styles of camping in this area. National and state park campgrounds are wooded, quiet, and light on amenities. Greenbelt has a dump station and potable water available, along with flush toilets and showers, and each campsite has a picnic table and combination grill and campfire ring. At Cedarville, campsites on the inner loop are equipped with electric and sites on the outer loop are primitive, with a bathhouse in the center of the loop and blue water spigots located throughout.
Private resorts run the opposite way, with pools, cafes, laundry, and shuttle services at a higher price point. Smallwood's family sites include a bathhouse with hot showers, a dump station, and 50-amp electric and potable water hook-ups at each site.
Road noise and aircraft noise can be factors at parks close to the Beltway or Joint Base Andrews, so ask about site placement when booking.
