Campgrounds near Kemp Mill
Kemp Mill is a Montgomery County community inside the Capital Beltway, roughly 10 miles north of downtown Washington, D.C. For RV travelers, it functions as a quiet residential base with quick access to Interstate 495, the DC Metro, and the museums and monuments of the National Mall. Campground options within a short drive fall into three groups: a national-park primitive campground, private RV resorts with full hookups, and a state-park campground along the Patapsco River corridor.
Closest to Kemp Mill is Greenbelt Park Campground, a wooded urban oasis about 10 miles from Washington, D.C. Cherry Hill Park in nearby College Park is the most amenity-heavy option, catering to families and big-rig travelers. Farther west and north, Ramblin' Pines in Woodbine and Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area sit closer to the Baltimore-Frederick corridor.
East of the city, the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday rounds out the picks. Together these campgrounds cover a wide range of RV needs, from full hookups and cabins to primitive tent loops and Metro-shuttle access to the capital.
Things to do near Kemp Mill
The National Mall, Smithsonian museums, and monuments are the main draw, and most nearby campgrounds are set up for day trips into the city. Cherry Hill Park offers buses to Metro and organizes sightseeing tours, which sidesteps DC parking and traffic. The Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday puts Annapolis and Baltimore's Inner Harbor within reach as well.
Outdoor options are close by. Greenbelt Park has forested trails, picnic areas, and ranger-led programs including free Saturday campfires with stories, history, and wildlife. Patapsco Valley State Park offers hiking, fishing, canoeing, horseback trails, and mountain bike trails, along with a view of the historic Thomas Viaduct, the world's longest multiple-arched stone railroad bridge. Ramblin' Pines adds family-oriented recreation aimed at kids.

Peak season around Kemp Mill runs from late March through October. Cherry blossom season in late March and early April is the single busiest window in the region, and RV sites near the city fill weeks or months in advance. Summer brings school-holiday demand, high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms; fall through mid-October delivers the most comfortable camping weather and steady weekend bookings.
Greenbelt Park Campground is open year round and reservations are required year round through Recreation.gov. Cherry Hill Park and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday also operate year-round, though seasonal amenities such as outdoor pools typically run from late spring to early fall. Ramblin' Pines is oriented to warm-weather family camping with peak activity in summer.
Winter camping is possible but limited: nights drop below freezing, some private-park amenities close, and the Hollofield area campground is currently closed for renovations, though the Hollofield day use area is open regular hours. Confirm status with the Maryland Park Service before booking.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

How to book Kemp Mill campgrounds
Reservation systems vary by operator. Greenbelt Park Campground must be reserved online through Recreation.gov, and walk-in sites and the cash or check drop box are no longer available. Sites may be booked up to 6 months in advance. Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area is reserved through the Maryland Park Service portal, with reservations made 1 day ahead of arrival and up to 365 days in advance, though Hollofield itself is currently closed for renovation.
Cherry Hill Park, Ramblin' Pines, and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday are private parks and take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For spring cherry-blossom dates, July 4th week, and fall foliage weekends, book several months out for full-hookup sites. Cancellation policies differ by property, so review terms and confirm rig-length limits before finalizing a site.
What to expect near Kemp Mill
Sites near Kemp Mill trade wilderness for convenience. The area is suburban and forested rather than remote, and traffic on I-495 and the BW Parkway is heavy during weekday rush hours. Plan arrivals and departures for midday when possible.
Amenities vary sharply. Cherry Hill Park has RV and tent sites, log cabins, cottages, yurts, and glamping pods, plus mini golf, fishing, golf cart rentals, a hot tub and sauna, and an on-site cafe. The Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday has full-hookup pull-throughs, cabins, and seasonal amenities. Greenbelt Park has no electrical or water hookups, but hot showers, bathroom facilities, and a dump station are available to registered campers. RV trailer maximum length at Greenbelt is 35 feet. Expect wooded, shaded sites at most parks, mosquitoes in summer, and Metro or shuttle access as the practical way into DC.

Good news: a standard Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Maryland for virtually every rig on RVezy. Maryland only requires a non-commercial Class B license for motorhomes with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,001 pounds, and almost every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer in the Kemp Mill area falls well under that threshold. You will need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there is no DMV trip required. Visiting from outside the US? Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book. That means if your plans change shortly after confirming, you have a window to cancel and get refunded. The exact refund amount depends on how close to your trip start date you cancel. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit so you can rebook with confidence. Visit the RVezy Help Center for current policy details, and reach out to support anytime if you need help adjusting dates instead of cancelling outright.

July and August are warm and humid (often 85-92°F with thunderstorms), so make sure your rental has working air conditioning and plan early-morning drives. Winter RV trips are absolutely doable thanks to mild lows in the 30s, and many local hosts list rigs with heated water tanks for cold-weather camping at parks like Greenbelt that stay open year-round.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will be more than okay, first time renting an RV is exactly who the RVezy platform is built for. Every host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery) where they walk you through driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, and dump procedures, and most hand you a printed cheat sheet. You can message your host throughout the trip with questions, and RVezy customer support plus 24/7 roadside assistance are always a tap away. For your first trip, consider a Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Kemp Mill, they handle much more like a large van than a bus, and Greenbelt Park is a stress-free first-night destination only 15 minutes away.

You are covered, every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is always one phone call away. Whether you have a flat tire on I-495, a dead battery at a campsite, or a mechanical issue on Skyline Drive, the roadside team coordinates a tow, jump, tire change, or fuel delivery directly to you. You should also message your host immediately, since they know their rig best and can often troubleshoot small issues like a tripped GFCI or finicky generator over the phone. Save both the RVezy support number and the host's contact in your phone before you pull out of Kemp Mill.

Canada trips may be allowed depending on the specific host, so message the owner directly from the listing before booking if you are planning to cross into Ontario or Quebec. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because coverage does not extend there. Always carry your rental agreement and registration at border crossings.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Kemp Mill RV trip?
Fuel budgeting is straightforward once you know your rig. Class B campervans average 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG, and Class A coaches run 6-10 MPG. With Maryland regular gas averaging around $3.30-$3.60 per gallon in the DC metro, a 300-mile weekend loop to Shenandoah in a Class C will run roughly $90-$120 in fuel. The cheapest stations are typically the Costco and Sam's Club in Beltsville and the Wawa locations along Route 29, all within 10 minutes of Kemp Mill. Pro tip: fill up before crossing into DC or northern Virginia where prices jump 20-40 cents per gallon.

Private parks like Cherry Hill Park in College Park typically book 2 to 4 months ahead for peak season but often have midweek openings. parkreservations.maryland.gov/What are driving conditions like around Kemp Mill?
Driving an RV around Kemp Mill is very manageable as long as you plan around DC's rush hours. The Capital Beltway (I-495) gets congested 6:30-9:30 a.m. and 3:30-7:00 p.m. on weekdays, so aim to leave town mid-morning or after dinner. Avoid downtown DC entirely in any RV, the height restrictions, narrow streets, and low parking garages aren't worth it. Instead, take the ICC (MD-200) east-west to bypass the city, and use I-270 north toward Frederick for a smooth highway exit. Local roads in Kemp Mill itself are wide and quiet. If you are nervous about city driving, book a host who offers RV delivery and skip the urban routes entirely.

State parks like Patapsco Valley typically include electric hookups at many RV sites and bathhouses. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often add a TV, generator, outdoor speakers, and even a second slide-out for extra room. Wi-Fi varies, so plan to use your phone hotspot or pick a host who lists mobile internet. Seatbelts are required for all passengers while driving, so check the listed sleeps-and-seatbelts count carefully if you are traveling with a family. montgomerycountymd.gov/dot-dts/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the secure RVezy platform, no cash or off-platform transfers, ever. You pay your rental total at booking using a credit or debit card, and the funds are processed by RVezy. A refundable security deposit, separate from your booking payment and typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, is authorized on your card before pickup and released after your trip ends, assuming the rig is returned in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at both pickup and dropoff, return the RV with a full fuel tank and empty holding tanks, and stay in touch with your host through the app.
