Camping near Kettering, Maryland
Kettering sits in Prince George's County, inside the Capital Beltway and roughly ten miles east of Washington, D.C. That location makes it a practical staging area for RV renters visiting the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums, and the wider D.C. metro without paying downtown lodging rates or navigating urban parking.
The surrounding area offers a mix of camping styles. Greenbelt Park Campground, run by the National Park Service, is the closest public option and sits just off the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. Cherry Hill Park, a family-owned resort in College Park, offers full hookups and its own shuttle service into the city. Cedarville State Forest, south of Kettering in Charles and Prince George's counties, provides a quieter, forested alternative at the headwaters of Zekiah Swamp.
Commercial parks such as Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday round out the options for travelers who want private-park amenities within easy reach of the capital.
Things to do in Kettering
Most trips from Kettering revolve around Washington, D.C. The Greenbelt Metro Station sits about 1.5 miles from Greenbelt Park, so campers can reach downtown by rail in roughly an hour. Cherry Hill Park runs on-site tours and shuttle service that connect directly into the city.
Outdoor options are close by as well. Greenbelt Park has a 5.3-mile Perimeter Trail plus shorter nature loops and three picnic areas. Cedarville State Forest covers 3,510 acres at the headwaters of Zekiah Swamp and offers roughly 19 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, plus a stocked freshwater fishing pond.
Other nearby stops include NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens, and the shops and restaurants along the Route 1 corridor in College Park.

The Kettering area has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, lower humidity, and the cherry blossom bloom in late March and early April drawing heavy visitation to D.C. Book early for those weeks.
Summer brings hot, humid days with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and peak crowds at Smithsonian sites and monuments. Private parks such as Cherry Hill Park and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday run at high occupancy from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Winter narrows the options. Cedarville State Forest's family campground is open April through October, so cold-weather RVers should plan on Greenbelt Park, which takes reservations year-round, or a private park with winter operations. Cold rain, occasional snow, and ice storms are all possible from December through February, and camp bathhouses in the area may operate with reduced service in the coldest months.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

How to book campgrounds near Kettering
Reservation systems differ by property. Greenbelt Park Campground books exclusively through Recreation.gov or by phone at 1-877-444-6777, with a rolling six-month booking window and year-round reservations required. The campground is primitive with no water or electric hookups, and RVs are limited to 30 feet in B Loop and 35 feet in D Loop.
Cedarville State Forest uses the Maryland Park Service system at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Inner-loop sites carry a 30-amp electric hookup, outer-loop sites are primitive, and the RV length limit is 35 feet. Stays are capped at 14 nights within any 21-day period.
Private parks including Cherry Hill Park, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC, and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday book directly through their own websites or phone lines. Reserve summer and cherry blossom season well in advance.
What to expect
Public campgrounds near Kettering are wooded and quiet compared to the surrounding suburbs, but urban noise carries. Sites at Cherry Hill Park and Greenbelt Park both sit close to major highways, and aircraft traffic from Joint Base Andrews is regularly audible at Cedarville State Forest.
Hookups vary widely. Greenbelt Park is primitive with flush toilets, showers, and a dump station but no site utilities. Cedarville offers 30-amp electric on inner-loop sites, a dump station, and water-fill spigots throughout the loop, but no sewer or water at sites. Full hookups are standard at Cherry Hill Park and the private KOA and Adventure Bound resorts.
Ticks are present in the mid-Atlantic region from spring through summer, so pack repellent and check pets and children after hikes. Quiet hours, leash rules, and firewood restrictions apply at all public campgrounds; buy firewood locally rather than moving it in.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Kettering, MD
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Kettering, MD?
Good news for budget-minded travelers: an RV rental in Kettering, MD is often more affordable than booking hotel rooms plus a rental car for the same trip. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $140 per night, campervans and Class C motorhomes in the $150 to $250 range, and larger Class A motorhomes around $250 to $400 per night. To save even more, look for shoulder season trips in April or October when prices dip after summer demand cools. Pro tip: hosts in the DC metro area often discount weekly bookings, so if you're planning a longer Chesapeake Bay loop, ask about multi-night rates before you book. First-time renters are usually surprised how much value they get for the price.
experienceprincegeorges.com/stay/camping-rv/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Maryland?
Great news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Kettering, MD. Maryland does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal motorhomes, including Class A, Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels available on RVezy. You will need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your identity right inside the platform when you book, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. Once that is set, you are cleared to roll out and enjoy your Maryland RV rental.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat's included for protection and peace of mind when I rent an RV in Kettering?
Every booking on RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so your Kettering RV trip starts with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level (Basic, Standard, or Premium) during checkout, not the host, and the plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your rental. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it gives renters meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on the road, whether you are parked in Upper Marlboro or rolling toward Assateague. Pro tip: pick the higher coverage level for first-time trips or long Chesapeake loops, it is a small upgrade for big confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Kettering RV rental?
You are not locked in the second you book. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a grace period after confirmation where you can cancel and get your money back. Beyond that window, refund amounts depend on how close you are to your trip start date, and RVezy has special accommodations for situations like natural disasters or major weather events, which matter in this region during Atlantic hurricane season. You will see the exact terms when you check out. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best motorhome rental Kettering inventory, knowing you have flexibility built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Kettering, MD?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Kettering, MD, and you can filter listings by Pet-Friendly right on RVezy to see them instantly. Once you find a great fit, message the host to share your dog's size and any habits, that's how you make sure everyone starts on the right paw. Local pet-friendly camping spots include Cedarville State Forest's outer loop in nearby Brandywine (pets welcome) and Greenbelt Park Campground, where leashed dogs can explore miles of wooded trails just 20 minutes north. Pro tip: pack a tie-out and a collapsible water bowl, both make campsite life with a pup so much easier.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/pages/southern/cedarville/camping.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Kettering?
Yes, RV delivery in Kettering is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you've never driven a big rig. Many hosts in Prince George's County will drive the RV directly to your campground, driveway, or chosen meet-up spot, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter for Delivery on RVezy and you'll see hosts offering setup at Cedarville State Forest, Greenbelt Park, and Cherry Hill Park in College Park. Pro tip: ask the host about their delivery radius and per-mile fee when you message, many include free delivery within a 20 or 30 mile range of Kettering.
experienceprincegeorges.com/stay/camping-rv/How far can I travel from Kettering on a typical RV rental?
You've got room to roam. Most hosts on RVezy include 100 to 150 free miles per night with your Kettering RV rental, and many offer unlimited mileage packages or low per-mile rates (typically $0.30 to $0.45) for longer trips. From Kettering you can reach Ocean City and Assateague Island in about 2.5 hours (140 miles), Shenandoah National Park in 2 hours (110 miles), Gettysburg, PA in under 2 hours (90 miles), and the New River Gorge in West Virginia in roughly 5 hours. Pro tip: if you're plotting a longer RV road trip from Kettering, message the host before booking and ask about an unlimited mileage add-on, it's often cheaper to pre-buy than pay overage at return.
nps.gov/asis/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere can I camp or park my RV near Kettering, MD?
You're spoiled for choice on great RV camping near Kettering. Top picks within an hour include: Cedarville State Forest in Brandywine (27 sites, electric hookups on the inner loop, dump station, $30/night, open April through October), Greenbelt Park Campground operated by the National Park Service just 20 minutes north (172 sites, dump station, year-round, $20/night), Cherry Hill Park in College Park (full hookups, pool, shuttle to DC Metro), and Patuxent River Park near Upper Marlboro (riverside sites). For overnight parking, Maryland does not allow sleeping at highway rest stops past a 3-hour limit, so book a campground in advance. Pro tip: Greenbelt fills fast in spring, reserve six months out on Recreation.gov.
nps.gov/gree/planyourvisit/campground.htmWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Kettering, MD?
Kettering's sweet spot for RV camping is mid-April through late October, with shoulder seasons being the secret weapon. Spring (April-May) brings 60-75°F days, dogwoods and azaleas in bloom at Greenbelt Park, and fewer crowds. Summer (June-August) is warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and afternoon thunderstorms, great for Chesapeake Bay beach trips but book AC-equipped RVs. Fall (September-October) is arguably the best window: crisp 55-75°F days, gorgeous foliage, and no humidity. Winter rentals work too, hosts with heated, four-season RVs can be found for off-peak DC sightseeing trips. Pro tip: plan around the National Cherry Blossom Festival in late March or early April for an unforgettable kickoff.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before, will I be able to handle it?
You've got this, and you won't be alone. First time renting an RV in Kettering? Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, the toilet, the generator, and slide-outs, plus they're a text away during your trip. If you're nervous about Beltway traffic or tight gas stations, choose a smaller Class B campervan or Class C motorhome (22-28 feet) which drive much like a large SUV. Better yet, filter for Delivery so the host brings the RV right to your campsite. Pro tip: do a practice loop around your neighborhood before heading toward I-495, and you'll feel like a pro by mile 10.
mva.maryland.gov/safety/Pages/MDSafetyPrograms.aspxWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether it is a flat tire on US-301, a dead battery at Cedarville State Forest, or you are locked out at a rest stop, help is one phone call away. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for quick fixes (think: how to relight the water heater) and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV's tire pressure, propane gauge, and fluid stickers during your pickup walkthrough, having those numbers handy makes any roadside call quick and easy.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I drive my Kettering RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is part of the fun. Most RVezy hosts in Kettering, MD welcome trips throughout the Mid-Atlantic and beyond, from Virginia's Shenandoah Valley to Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, Delaware beaches, and up into New York. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed with advance host approval (just message them through the listing before booking to confirm insurance coverage). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection package doesn't extend there. Popular RV road trips from Kettering include the 4-hour run to Virginia Beach, the 3-hour drive to Lancaster County's Amish Country, and a 6-hour Skyline Drive loop. Pro tip: avoid the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel and Fort McHenry Tunnel with propane on board, use I-695 instead.
mdta.maryland.gov/facilities-informationHow much should I budget for fuel on a Kettering RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable on any RV road trip from Kettering, so plan smart. Class B campervans get roughly 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 10-14 MPG, and large Class A rigs hover around 7-10 MPG. With Maryland gas averaging around $3.30-$3.60 per gallon, a 500-mile loop in a Class C costs roughly $130-$170 in fuel. Diesel pushers cost more per gallon but go further per tank. Pro tip: Costco in Beltsville and the Wawa stations along US-301 typically have the lowest fuel prices in the Kettering area, and many big-rig-friendly truck stops sit along I-95 if you need extra clearance. Apps like GasBuddy will save you real money.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Kettering?
Book early and breathe easy. For Maryland state parks like Cedarville State Forest and Patuxent River Park, the reservation window opens through parkreservations.maryland.gov, and summer weekends often fill 2-3 months out. Greenbelt Park (operated by the National Park Service) opens reservations 6 months in advance through Recreation.gov, and DC-area weekends in April for cherry blossoms or October for foliage book up fastest. Private parks like Cherry Hill Park in College Park accept reservations a year out. Pro tip: aim for a Sunday-through-Thursday stay if your schedule is flexible, you'll find way more openings and quieter campgrounds, especially Memorial Day through Labor Day when state parks require 2-night minimums.
parkreservations.maryland.gov/What's driving an RV like around Kettering and the DC metro area?
It's manageable with a little planning. Kettering sits just east of the Capital Beltway (I-495), where traffic is heaviest weekdays 6-9 AM and 3-7 PM, so plan departures and arrivals outside rush hours. Stick to I-495, I-95, US-50, and US-301 for RV-friendly routes with wide lanes. Critical heads-up: vehicles carrying propane are prohibited in the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, Fort McHenry Tunnel, and the Baltimore Washington Parkway (BW Parkway also bans commercial-style RVs), so route via I-95 or I-695 instead. Maryland caps combined RV-and-tow length at 60 feet. Pro tip: use an RV-specific GPS app like RV Life or Garmin RV to auto-avoid low bridges and propane-restricted tunnels.
mdta.maryland.gov/facilities-informationWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Kettering?
Most campgrounds within an hour of Kettering offer the essentials you need for a smooth RV camping trip. Cedarville State Forest's inner loop has 30-amp electric, water spigots throughout the loop, a renovated bathhouse with hot showers, and a dump station near the exit. Greenbelt Park is primitive (no hookups at sites) but has a dump station, potable water fills, flush toilets, and showers. Cherry Hill Park in College Park is the gold-standard full-hookup option with 30/50-amp, sewer, Wi-Fi, a pool, and a Metro shuttle. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving any state park since potable water taps aren't at every site, and dump black tanks on the way out so you arrive empty for your next stop.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/pages/southern/cedarville/camping.aspxWhat features and amenities will the RV itself have?
Even the smallest campervan rental Kettering hosts offer comes more equipped than most people expect. Standard features across RVezy listings typically include a queen or full bed, a kitchen with stove, fridge, sink and basic cookware, a wet bath or full bathroom with toilet and shower, AC and furnace, propane, fresh/gray/black water tanks, and seatbelted seating. Class C and Class A motorhomes often add a TV, generator, outdoor awning, and bunk beds. Many hosts include linens, camp chairs, and a starter pack of toilet paper and dish soap. Pro tip: when messaging the host, ask if they include a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot or backup generator, those two add-ons make remote sites at Cedarville feel like home.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kettering%2C%20MarylandWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Kettering RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular RVezy add-ons in Kettering, MD include delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile), generator usage (around $3 to $5 per hour over a daily allotment), kitchen kits, linen and towel packages ($25 to $75 flat), bike racks, kayak racks, and outdoor patio mats. Some hosts even offer a pre-stocked grocery option for first-time families. Mileage allowances often start around 100 free miles per night with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.45 each, or unlimited mileage upgrades. Pickup and dropoff is usually at the host's home, but many will meet you at Cherry Hill Park or Greenbelt to save you the cross-town drive. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus setup for a family RV trip Kettering style, your kids will already be swimming while the host levels the rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kettering%2C%20MarylandHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Booking is straightforward and secure. When you reserve an RV in Kettering, MD on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup and released after the trip ends with no incidents. To avoid issues, complete the pre-trip walkthrough with the host, take dated photos of the RV inside and out, and return the rig with the same fuel level and a clean interior. Pro tip: dump the black tank and refuel within 5 miles of dropoff, those are the two most common reasons deposits get partially withheld.
