Campgrounds near La Vale, Maryland
La Vale sits in Allegany County in Maryland's mountain west, minutes from Cumberland and Interstate 68. The area serves RV travelers as a base for the Allegheny Front, the Potomac River corridor, and the C&O Canal National Historical Park. Terrain is rugged, with ridges, hardwood forest, and river valleys shaping where campgrounds cluster.
Spring Gap Campground sits at Mile 173.3 on the C&O Canal Towpath, near Cumberland on the Maryland side of the Potomac River, giving direct access to towpath biking and paddling. Private options in the region include Eagle's Nest Campground, Hidden Springs Campground, Sleepy Hollow Campground, and Millesons Walnut Grove Campground, which typically offer a mix of RV hookups, tent sites, and cabins.
Rocky Gap State Park, in Allegany County, encompasses over 3,000 acres of public land surrounded by rugged mountains and features the 243-acre Lake Habeeb. Note that the state park campground is scheduled for an extended closure during a major renovation, so private and federal options carry more of the load.
Things to do near La Vale
The C&O Canal Towpath is the region's headline draw. The most popular activities for Spring Gap campers are hiking local trails, biking the C&O Canal Towpath, paddling, and fishing, and the campground has a boat ramp for access to the Potomac River for kayakers and anglers. The Great Allegheny Passage links Cumberland to Pittsburgh for long-distance cyclists.
Rocky Gap State Park adds lake swimming, boat rentals (electric motors only), and trail miles through hemlock forest and a mile-long gorge. In Cumberland, the C&O Canal National Historical Park Cumberland Visitor Center is open seven days a week, and the Allegany Museum, Gordon-Roberts House, Gilchrist Gallery, and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad are all worth a visit.
Families often combine a rail excursion with a canal-town day and an afternoon at the lake, which works well for younger children who tire of long drives.

Late spring through early fall is the primary RV season. Spring Gap Campground is open year-round, with mid-April through mid-November considered peak season. Summer weekends draw the heaviest traffic to the lake and towpath, and holiday weekends can sell out weeks in advance. Rocky Gap is a busy destination, and capacity closures are common on summer weekends and holidays when the campground is open.
Fall brings cooler nights, low humidity, and strong color across the ridges. It is the region's most comfortable RV window, though water at primitive federal sites shuts down as the season ends. At Spring Gap, hand-pump potable water is available from April 15 through November 1.
Winter camping is possible but cold, with snow on higher terrain and reduced services. Spring is variable: green-up is beautiful, but rain is frequent and creek levels can run high, which affects paddling and low-lying towpath sections.
How to book
Federal sites in the C&O Canal National Historical Park use the national reservation system. Reservations are required to camp at Spring Gap Campground and all other drive-in campgrounds within the park, and can be made online up to six months in advance at Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777, with a credit or debit card required.
Maryland state parks use a separate system. Reservations for Maryland state parks are made at parkreservations.maryland.gov or by phone at 1-888-432-2267, though the Rocky Gap campground is scheduled to be closed for renovation during an extended window. Private campgrounds in the area, including Eagle's Nest Campground, Hidden Springs Campground, Sleepy Hollow Campground, and Millesons Walnut Grove Campground, typically book directly by phone or through their own websites.
For summer weekends and holidays, book several weeks out. Midweek arrivals give the best chance at walk-in availability.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near the Potomac and along the canal are compact. Spring Gap Campground offers 12 single drive-in campsites and two drive-in group sites; campsites 1, 2, 8, 11, and 13 fit a single vehicle, while campsites 3-7, 12, and 14 can fit a small RV, trailer, or pop-up up to 20 feet in length. Larger rigs should confirm length limits before booking and consider private parks in La Vale, Cumberland, or nearby small towns for full hookups.
Federal campgrounds here are primitive. The C&O Canal National Historical Park is a trash-free park, so campers plan to pack out all trash. Expect pit or portable toilets, seasonal hand-pump water, and fire rings, and expect train and road noise from nearby rail lines and highways.
Check-in is 1 PM, check-out is 12 PM, quiet hours run 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and stays are limited to 14 days between May 1 and October 1, with a 30-day annual cap.

For first time renting an RV in La Vale, many guests choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental La Vale option, which drives a lot like a large van. The biggest local consideration: I-68 climbs and descends through serious mountain grades (Sideling Hill is famous for its 6% grades), so use lower gears on downhills and take it slow. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick parking practice run before you head out, they're happy to help.

Budgeting for fuel is easier than most first-timers think. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, larger Class A rigs come in around 6 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Gas prices in the La Vale and Cumberland area typically run a few cents below the Maryland state average thanks to Western Maryland's competitive market, with stations clustered along Vocke Road and the I-68 exits. For a 3-night trip to Rocky Gap and back from a 200-mile radius, most renters spend $80 to $180 on fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Cumberland before heading west, prices climb as you approach Garrett County.

Use lower gears on downhills, leave extra following distance, and watch for sudden weather, fog and snow squalls can pop up on the higher ridges from November through March. In town, La Vale's Vocke Road corridor is wide and RV-friendly with big-box parking. Pro tip: avoid narrow back roads like Pleasant Valley Road in winter unless your host has cleared them.
