Campgrounds near Layhill, Maryland
Layhill sits in Montgomery County, Maryland, inside the Washington, D.C. commuter belt. RV travelers use it as a base for the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums, and the parks of the Capital Region, without paying downtown parking rates or navigating urban streets in a large rig. The closest full-service option is Cherry Hill Park in College Park, which markets itself as the closest RV park to Washington, D.C. and runs shuttles and guided tours toward the city.
For lower-key camping, Greenbelt Park Campground is a National Park Service site about ten miles from downtown D.C., set in wooded terrain and open year-round. West of Layhill, Ramblin' Pines and Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area sit closer to Baltimore, useful for trips that combine both cities.
Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday rounds out the mix on the north side of the metro, oriented toward RV travelers who want standard KOA amenities and a straightforward drive into the District.
Things to do near Layhill
The main draw is Washington, D.C. From most campgrounds in this cluster, the Metro puts the National Mall, the Smithsonian, the U.S. Capitol, and the monuments within a single-transfer ride. Cherry Hill Park runs guided sightseeing tours and shuttle service toward the Metro, which removes the parking headache that otherwise defines an RV visit to a capital city.
Outdoor options fill the rest of the trip. Greenbelt Park has about nine miles of trails and free Saturday ranger campfire programs. Patapsco Valley State Park covers roughly 32 miles of river corridor with hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and horseback trails, plus a view of the Thomas Viaduct in the Avalon Area. Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens and the Goddard Space Flight Center are both short drives from the Greenbelt area.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows. Late March through mid-April brings the cherry blossom peak in D.C., which drives heavy demand at every campground within reach of the Metro. Cherry Hill Park in particular fills early for that stretch and for major spring and summer holiday weekends, so reservations several months out are standard.
Summer is the peak family season. Expect hot, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and full campgrounds on weekends. Greenbelt Park stays open year-round, which makes it a useful shoulder-season option when private parks slow down. Patapsco Valley State Park's seasonal shelters and some day-use facilities typically operate late March through early November, with year-round exceptions on select sites.
Winter is quiet. Snow events can shut roads down briefly, and some private-park amenities such as pools close, but the National Park Service campground and the year-round private parks keep taking bookings. Book winter stays around any inauguration or major D.C. event well in advance.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

Both VANessa and Vanessa were awesome. All the amenities are thoughtfully available. Van drove well and my son and I had a trip we’ll talk about for years and remember forever. Vanessa is a great communicator and great person. 5+ stars.

Had an amazing travel experience with VANessa and Vanessa was a joy to work with. So very accommodating. The van is beautiful and has everything you could want. Even my pup Seamus gave it two paws up!

How to book
Greenbelt Park Campground takes reservations exclusively through Recreation.gov, on a rolling six-month window. The campground operates year-round and no longer accepts cash or walk-in payments on site, so a Recreation.gov booking is required even during quiet periods.
Patapsco Valley State Park sites are booked through the Maryland Park Service reservation portal at parkreservations.maryland.gov. The Hollofield Area campground has been closed for a multi-season renovation, so confirm current status before planning around it; the Hilton Area has continued to take reservations.
Cherry Hill Park, Ramblin' Pines, and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday are private parks that book through their own websites or major aggregator platforms. For cherry blossom season, summer weekends, and any inauguration-adjacent dates, reserve as far ahead as the system allows.
What to expect
These are metro-area campgrounds, not backcountry ones. Traffic noise from the Capital Beltway and nearby arterials is audible at Cherry Hill Park and Greenbelt Park, and both sit within a short drive of Metro stations. Cell service is generally reliable across the cluster.
Site types vary widely. Cherry Hill Park offers full-hookup RV sites, tent sites, cabins, and additional lodging options, along with pools, a splash park, a café, and a dog park on site. Greenbelt Park is tent- and small-RV-oriented, with picnic tables, fire rings, showers, and a dump station, but no hookups; alcohol is not permitted in the campground, and the tree canopy limits solar and satellite reception at many sites.
Ticks are a known issue in the Mid-Atlantic region in spring and summer, so bring repellent. Fire rings are provided at most sites, and firewood should be sourced locally to avoid moving pests.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Layhill, MD
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Layhill, MD?
RV rental in Layhill is more affordable than most travelers expect. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes average $175 to $250, and larger Class A rigs land between $250 and $400. Because hosts set their own pricing on RVezy, you can filter by budget and find cheap RV rental Layhill options that still include the renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. To save more, book midweek pickups, target shoulder seasons in April and October, and look for hosts offering unlimited mileage. Pro tip: rentals booked 4 to 6 weeks before a summer weekend at Assateague tend to lock in the best rates before peak demand kicks in.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Layhill,MarylandWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Layhill, MD?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Layhill. Maryland does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes and trailers under standard non-commercial weight limits, which covers virtually every rental on RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork on pickup day. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), usually under $20 from your local auto association. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward Maryland makes it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Layhill, MD?
Every RVezy booking in Layhill automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you drive off. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind without buying separate coverage. During checkout you (not the host) choose which level of protection fits your trip, from basic to premium tiers with lower deductibles. It's purpose-built for peer-to-peer RV rentals and backed by RVezy's support team. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer Layhill RV trip toward the Blue Ridge, the upgraded tier is worth the small daily upcharge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Layhill, MD RV rental?
You can book your RV rental in Layhill with confidence because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy across the platform. That means consistent, transparent rules no matter which listing you pick. There's a money-back grace period right after booking, and additional protections apply for situations like natural disasters or major weather events that affect the Mid-Atlantic and DC region. Specific refund amounts depend on how far out you cancel and the circumstances, so review the current policy on RVezy's Help Center before confirming. Pro tip: booking early gives you the widest selection and the most flexibility if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Layhill, MD RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Layhill options are easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings where dogs (and often cats) are welcome. Many hosts include perks like pet beds and water bowls, or charge a small cleaning fee instead of a strict no-pets rule. Once you've got your rig, your pup will love nearby Rock Creek Regional Park in Rockville, the off-leash dog area at Cabin John Regional Park, or a longer trek to Assateague Island National Seashore, where dogs are permitted in limited areas of the Maryland district (check current pet rules before you go). Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm size and breed details so check-in is smooth.
nps.gov/asis/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to me in Layhill, MD?
Yes, RV delivery Layhill is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who'd rather skip driving a big rig through Montgomery County traffic. Many local hosts will deliver the RV directly to your driveway, a nearby campground like Little Bennett Regional Park in Clarksburg, or Cherry Hill Park in College Park, then handle setup and a full walkthrough on hookups, slide-outs, and systems. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location, so closer hosts mean lower fees. Use the Delivery filter to narrow your search. Pro tip: ask about a delivered-and-setup package if you want to arrive at camp with everything already plugged in and ready.
montgomeryparks.org/parks-and-trails/little-bennett-regional-park/How far can I drive from Layhill, MD on an RV trip?

Most RVezy hosts in the area offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, ideal for an RV road trip from Layhill that loops through the Blue Ridge. Pro tip: book Little Bennett through Montgomery Parks online up to a year in advance for summer weekends, they fill quickly.
montgomeryparks.org/parks-and-trails/little-bennett-regional-park/camping/When is the best time to rent an RV in Layhill, MD?
Layhill enjoys a true four-season climate, which means you've got more options than you'd think. Late April through mid-June delivers warm 65 to 80°F days with blooming dogwoods and fewer crowds at Shenandoah. July and August are peak season with highs in the upper 80s and humidity, great for beach trips to Assateague but pricier. September through early November is the local favorite: crisp 55 to 75°F days, fall foliage on Skyline Drive, and lower nightly rates. Even winter works for a motorhome rental Layhill if you want to visit DC's holiday lights without freezing in a hotel. Pro tip: mid to late October typically hits peak fall color in the Blue Ridge, book by August.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. Is Layhill, MD a good place to start?
Layhill is honestly one of the easier places in the Mid-Atlantic for a first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, water hookups, propane, slide-outs, and dump procedures, so you won't be left guessing. Many local hosts also offer delivery and setup if you'd rather skip the drive entirely. From Layhill you can stick to easy, RV-friendly routes like I-270 north to Little Bennett or US-29 to Patapsco Valley, both well-paved with gentle grades. You'll also have 24/7 roadside assistance included with your booking. Pro tip: ask your host to text you a video walkthrough the day before pickup, it's a game-changer for confidence.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rving-safetyWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Layhill, MD trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. Just call the number provided in your trip details and a technician will be dispatched to your location, whether you're on the Capital Beltway, parked at Greenbelt Park, or somewhere along Skyline Drive. RVezy's customer support team is also available around the clock to coordinate with your host and keep your trip moving. Pro tip: before leaving Layhill, snap a photo of the roadside assistance contact card and save it to your phone's lock screen for one-tap access.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive an RV rental from Layhill, MD into other states or Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is fully allowed and incredibly popular from Layhill. Maryland's location means you can roll into Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Delaware, or DC within an hour, and many guests do multi-state RV road trips from Layhill covering the Blue Ridge Parkway or the Outer Banks. Cross-border trips to Canada may be allowed but require host approval and insurance confirmation, so message the host before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan and insurance don't extend there. Pro tip: a classic 7-day loop from Layhill hits Shenandoah, Asheville's Blue Ridge, and back through Gettysburg, about 1,200 miles total.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Layhill, MD RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to plan. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg, and Class A rigs run 7 to 10 mpg. Maryland gas prices typically hover around $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon, with cheaper diesel and regular available at Costco in Gaithersburg or Sam's Club in Frederick just 15 to 25 minutes from Layhill. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up before crossing into DC or hitting I-95 corridor stations, prices spike noticeably the closer you get to the city.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Layhill, MD?
For the best campgrounds near Layhill, plan ahead. Maryland State Parks like Patapsco Valley open reservations 12 months in advance through the Maryland Park Service reservation system, and prime summer weekends sell out within hours. Montgomery County's Little Bennett Regional Park accepts bookings up to a year out via Montgomery Parks. National Park sites like Greenbelt Park use Recreation.gov with a 6-month rolling window. Private parks like Cherry Hill Park book 3 to 6 months ahead for peak summer. Pro tip: for a family RV trip Layhill over Memorial Day, July 4th, or Labor Day, set a calendar reminder exactly 12 months and 6 months ahead, the moment booking opens is when you'll get the prime sites.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232466What are driving conditions like around Layhill, MD?
Layhill driving is manageable with a little planning. The biggest factor is the Capital Beltway (I-495) which gets heavy 7 to 10 AM and 3 to 7 PM weekdays, so time your departure for mid-morning or after 7 PM. I-270 north toward Frederick is RV-friendly with wide lanes and gentle grades. Avoid driving big rigs through downtown Bethesda or into DC proper because of low clearances under the 11-foot rail bridges. Watch for summer thunderstorms (June through August) that can bring sudden downpours, and occasional winter snow from December through February. Pro tip: use the Maryland 511 traffic site before you roll out, it shows real-time Beltway slowdowns and helps you pick the best route.

Little Bennett Regional Park provides electric sites, potable water fill, a dump station, hot showers, and a camp store. Greenbelt Park is more rustic with no hookups but has flush toilets, showers, and a dump station included with your $20-ish nightly fee. Most Maryland State Park campgrounds offer at least electric and water with a centralized dump station. Pro tip: if your RV's gray and black tanks are getting full, Cherry Hill Park's dump station is open to non-guests for a small fee, super handy on your way back to Layhill.
nps.gov/gree/planyourvisit/campground.htmWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Layhill, MD?

Most listings include a TV, many have Wi-Fi boosters or starter packages, and generators are standard on Class A and C motorhomes for off-grid power. Campervan rental Layhill options (Class B) are more compact but still pack kitchenettes and beds. Mileage policies vary, expect 100 to 150 free miles per night with $0.30 to $0.45 per extra mile, or look for unlimited mileage listings. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking, they're often discounted versus adding them later.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/passenger-safety/recreational-vehicles-and-towingHow do payment and the security deposit work for a Layhill, MD RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy. You pay through the platform at booking via credit card, no cash or off-platform transfers (those aren't covered by protection). A refundable security deposit, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after return assuming no damage or policy violations. To avoid surprise charges, do a thorough walkaround video with your host at pickup and return, refill the fuel and propane to the starting level, and dump the tanks if your agreement requires it. Pro tip: use a credit card with strong dispute protection for the deposit hold, it adds an extra layer of security to your Layhill RV rental.
