Camping near Lonaconing, Maryland
Lonaconing sits in the Georges Creek Valley of Allegany County, in the Allegheny Mountains of far western Maryland. The town is within easy driving distance of Savage River State Forest to the west and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park along the Potomac to the south, giving RV travelers a mix of primitive mountain sites and river-corridor camping.
The closest options include Sleepy Hollow Campground and Eagle's Nest Campground for privately operated stays with more services. For state park camping, Big Run State Park and New Germany State Park lie a short drive west in Garrett County. Spring Gap Campground on the C&O Canal offers federal drive-in camping along the Potomac near Cumberland.
Mountain state park sites in this area are largely rustic. Many have limited or no hookups, and RV length limits apply. Travelers with larger rigs should confirm site dimensions during booking and plan for cell service to be spotty or absent inside park boundaries.
Things to do around Lonaconing
Outdoor recreation drives most trips. The Savage River Reservoir at Big Run State Park supports trout, bass, tiger muskie, and catfish fishing, and campers can launch electric and non-motorized boats. The Monroe Run Trail, a challenging route of roughly 4.6 miles, is accessible from Big Run and follows an old CCC road with multiple creek crossings.
New Germany State Park has a 13-acre lake used for swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating, plus about ten miles of multi-use trails that support hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing in winter.
Closer to Cumberland, families can bike the C&O Canal Towpath from Spring Gap, tour the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, or visit the Allegany Museum and the C&O Canal Cumberland Visitor Center.

December - February
37° / 21°F 65 mmCold and snowy; primitive sites rough, no potable water.
The area has a mountain climate with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. Peak camping runs late spring through early fall, when trails are dry and services like potable water are turned on. The hand pump well at Spring Gap, for example, operates from April 15 through November 1, and campers should carry water outside that window.
Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly at New Germany State Park, which has a small campground with tight loops popular with tent campers and smaller rigs. Fall brings cooler temperatures, quieter campgrounds, and strong foliage color across the surrounding ridges, making it a favored time for RV travel.
Winter is the most restrictive season. Big Run's primitive sites remain reservable year-round, but conditions are rough, there is no potable water or trash service, and cell service is absent. New Germany is also undergoing a multi-year water and wastewater upgrade that is closing cabins, campsites, and pavilions at various times, so campers should check availability before planning a trip.
How to book near Lonaconing
Maryland state parks, including Big Run and New Germany, take reservations through parkreservations.maryland.gov or by calling 1-888-432-CAMP. Reservations can be made up to 365 days in advance and must be made at least one day before arrival. Same-day reservations are not accepted online or by phone. At Big Run, campers without a reservation may pay upon arrival for a site marked AVAILABLE, for one night only.
Spring Gap Campground and the other drive-in sites in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park require reservations through Recreation.gov, available up to six months in advance, or by calling 877-444-6777. A credit or debit card is required, and cash on arrival is not accepted.
Private campgrounds such as Sleepy Hollow Campground and Eagle's Nest Campground book directly through the operator.
What to expect on site
Most nearby public campgrounds skew rustic. Big Run State Park offers 23 primitive sites with picnic tables and fire rings, portable toilets, and no potable water, trash service, or cell service. Access is via several miles of small non-highway roads off Savage River Road.
New Germany State Park has a shaded, wooded setting with a bathhouse, but roads and sites are tight and better suited to tents and smaller RVs. Cell reception is not available inside the park, and an emergency phone is provided at the Lake House.
Spring Gap has 12 single drive-in sites and two group sites. Sites 3-7, 12, and 14 can fit a small RV, trailer, or pop-up up to 20 feet, while sites 1, 2, 8, 11, and 13 accept only a single vehicle such as a car or pickup. Pit and portable toilets are provided, and the park is trash-free, so campers must pack out all waste.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there is a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, refund amounts depend on how far out you are from your trip start date, with provisions for extenuating circumstances. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds guests or issues credits so your plans stay protected, which matters in Western Maryland where winter weather can occasionally affect Interstate 68. RVezy support can walk you through the specifics anytime. Lock in your Lonaconing dates with confidence: most trips here are booked 2 to 4 months ahead.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Lonaconing?

Message the host before booking if you have a large breed or multiple pets so they can confirm. Pro tip: pack a tie-out and bring extra towels, the Georges Creek Valley trails get muddy in spring and your pup will thank you for an easier post-hike rinse.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/RockyGap.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Lonaconing?
Yes, RV delivery Lonaconing renters love is offered by many hosts on RVezy, just use the Delivery filter to see who delivers and how far. Popular drop-off spots include Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone (about 20 minutes east), New Germany State Park near Grantsville (about 25 minutes west), and Savage River State Forest sites. Your host will bring the motorhome or travel trailer, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system, generator, slide-outs, propane, the works. This is hands-down the easiest way for first-timers to start a Lonaconing RV trip without ever driving the rig. Delivery fees usually run by the mile, so closer pickups stay budget-friendly.

mdta.maryland.gov/Toll_Rates/MDTAFacilityTollRates.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Lonaconing, MD?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Lonaconing travelers rave about. Top picks within 30 minutes: Rocky Gap State Park (lakeside sites with electric hookups, swimming beach, and a casino resort nearby), New Germany State Park (quiet hemlock-shaded sites near a 13-acre lake), Savage River State Forest (rustic, creekside, year-round access), and Big Run State Park (waterfront primitive sites where Big Run meets the Savage River Reservoir). Just over the line in Garrett County, Deep Creek Lake State Park offers full hookup sites April through December. Pro tip: Rocky Gap and Deep Creek book up fastest on summer weekends, snag your spot the moment your dates lock in.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/savageriver.aspxWhen is the best time of year to plan a Lonaconing RV trip?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping Lonaconing visitors love, with daytime highs from 70°F to 81°F and cool mountain evenings perfect for campfires. The Allegheny Plateau sits around 1,800 to 2,700 feet, so summers stay 5 to 10 degrees cooler than the lowlands, a real bonus in July and August. Early October is magic: the Western Maryland hardwood forests light up in red, orange, and gold, and crowds thin out. Winters are genuinely cold and snowy (lows from 11°F to 21°F, regular snow accumulation), so most state park campgrounds close December through March. Pro tip: book a fall foliage week between October 5 and 20 for peak color along Big Savage Mountain.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never done this before. Will I get help operating the RV?
You're in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery), walking through the generator, water tanks, propane, slide-outs, awning, and waste system step by step, usually 30 to 60 minutes. First time renting an RV in Lonaconing? Message the host through the listing before you book to ask questions, most respond within hours and love helping new renters get excited. You'll also have RVezy's 24/7 support and a printed or digital cheat sheet from the host. Pro tip: stay your first night at a full-hookup site like Rocky Gap or Yogi Bear's Mill Run Campground, it's the easiest way to practice connecting water, sewer, and 30-amp power before heading deeper into Savage River State Forest.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat happens if I break down or have trouble on the road?
You are never on your own. Every Lonaconing RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance through the protection plan, covering services like flat tires, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Western Maryland's mountain roads (think Route 36 through Georges Creek Valley and the grades on Interstate 68 toward Sideling Hill) can be tough on tires and brakes, so this safety net matters. One call dispatches a technician to your location, even near the trailheads around Savage River. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app for vehicle-specific questions like resetting the generator. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and save your host's number before leaving cell coverage.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Lonaconing?
An RV road trip from Lonaconing puts some of the East's best scenery within a day's drive. Top routes: head 30 miles west to Deep Creek Lake for kayaking and Wisp Resort; drive 90 miles southwest to Seneca Rocks and the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia; cruise 140 miles north to Ohiopyle State Park and Fallingwater in Pennsylvania; or follow the C&O Canal Towpath 150 miles east toward Harpers Ferry and Washington DC. Cross-border travel into Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia is allowed and easy, but trips into Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals. Canada travel may be possible with host approval. Pro tip: the 50-mile stretch of US-40 (the old National Road) from Cumberland to Grantsville is stunning in October.
nps.gov/choh/planyourvisit/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Lonaconing RV trip?
Fuel is one of your biggest variables, but it's manageable. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches typically 6 to 9 MPG, and trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Maryland gas prices generally run a bit above the national average, expect $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon for regular in Allegany County, with diesel slightly higher. A typical 4-day, 300-mile loop from Lonaconing to Deep Creek and back in a Class C costs roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Frostburg or LaVale where prices tend to beat the smaller Georges Creek Valley stations, and drive 55 to 60 mph on Interstate 68 to squeeze the best MPG out of any rig.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campsite near Lonaconing?
For Maryland State Parks like Rocky Gap, New Germany, and Big Run, book through the official Maryland Park Service reservation system as early as possible, sites become reservable up to 12 months in advance and the most popular lakeside RV pads disappear within minutes of opening for Memorial Day, July 4th, and peak October foliage weekends. For private parks like Pleasant Valley Family Campground in Frostburg or Mill Run in Friendsville, 1 to 3 months out is usually fine. Midweek and shoulder season (May, September, early October) often have same-week openings. Pro tip: if your first-choice park is full, check Savage River State Forest's drive-in sites, they're more rustic but rarely fully booked and put you right on the trout streams.
parkreservations.maryland.gov/What are driving conditions like around Lonaconing?
Driving an RV around Lonaconing is very manageable as long as you respect the terrain. You're in the Allegheny Mountains, so expect steep grades on Big Savage Mountain (Interstate 68 hits 6 to 7 percent grades east of Frostburg) and winding two-lane stretches on Route 36 through Georges Creek. Use lower gears descending, and give brakes time to cool. Winter brings real snow and ice from December to March, so most travelers stick to April through November for stress-free driving. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially near Savage River State Forest. Pro tip: Maryland Route 135 and US-219 are the smoothest scenic routes to Deep Creek Lake, and Interstate 68's Sideling Hill cut, 40 miles east, is one of the coolest highway sights on the East Coast.
chart.maryland.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Lonaconing?
You'll find a great range of campground amenities within 30 miles of Lonaconing. Rocky Gap State Park offers electric hookups, hot showers, a dump station, potable water fills, and a swim beach on Lake Habeeb. New Germany State Park has electric sites, modern bathhouses, a camp store, and lake swimming. Savage River State Forest is more rustic (pit toilets, hand-pump water, no hookups) but stunning. For full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Yogi Bear's Mill Run Campground and Pleasant Valley Family Campground in Frostburg are your best bets. Most state parks have a dump station near the entrance and a potable water spigot, free with your campsite reservation. Pro tip: top off freshwater before heading into Savage River State Forest, it's the most beautiful spot in the area but the most off-grid.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/biground.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs I'll see for rent in Lonaconing?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental Lonaconing listing includes a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with air conditioning and furnace heat, dinette, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most Class C motorhomes sleep 4 to 6, larger Class A's sleep 6 to 8, and campervans (Class B) sleep 2 to 4. Many hosts include a generator for off-grid power, USB ports, a TV, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots as an add-on. Pro tip: filter by the Sleeps count you actually need, smaller rigs are easier to maneuver on Lonaconing's twisty mountain roads and noticeably cheaper to fuel.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/rv-and-motorhome-safetyWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Lonaconing RV rental?
Hosts offer a great menu of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common extras include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, plates, and utensils ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generator hours for off-grid use, bike racks, and propane refills. Many hosts include delivery and setup to nearby spots like Rocky Gap or New Germany State Park (priced per mile). Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Lonaconing, Frostburg, or Cumberland, and you'll see exact mileage policies on the listing. Pro tip: bundle a delivery, linen kit, and full propane tank on your first rental, it turns the whole experience into a turn-key vacation where you literally just show up at the campsite.
visitmaryland.org/article/explore-mountain-marylandHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Lonaconing, RVezy charges your card through the platform, never pay a host directly, that is how you stay protected. A separate security deposit hold (typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) is placed on your card before pickup and released after the trip assuming no damage or policy issues. The deposit is a temporary authorization, not an extra charge, and it is kept separate from your booking payment. To avoid issues, photograph the RV at pickup and dropoff, follow the mileage and generator policies, and return it on time. Pro tip: ask about the dump and fuel-return policy at orientation, those are the most common reasons for unexpected charges.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Lonaconing during winter?
Yes, winter RV rental Maryland adventures are absolutely possible from Lonaconing, and a magical few hosts keep rigs available year-round for snow-loving travelers. Look for listings with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a strong furnace, message the host to confirm cold-weather readiness before booking. Savage River State Forest stays accessible all winter, and Wisp Resort at Deep Creek Lake (30 miles west) is one of the few ski areas in Maryland, perfect for an RV ski basecamp. Plan to camp at sites with electric hookups (shore power) so you can run the furnace without draining batteries, and pack chains or carry a 4WD tow vehicle. Pro tip: lows can hit single digits in January, so request a propane top-off and bring an electric space heater for backup comfort.
