Campgrounds near Long Beach, Maryland
Long Beach sits on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Calvert County, Maryland, about a two-hour drive south of Baltimore and roughly ninety minutes from Washington, D.C. The community fronts the bay along a stretch known for fossil-rich cliffs, tidal creeks, and quiet waterfront neighborhoods. It makes a practical base for RV travelers who want bay access without the crowds of the Delaware or Ocean City coast.
Campground options in the surrounding region range from state-run forest sites to private waterfront resorts. Taylors Island Family Campgrounds and Coles Point Marina and RV Resort sit on the water across the bay or along the Potomac, while Take It Easy Campground offers a smaller, wooded setting closer inland. Cedarville State Forest - Family provides a public option managed by the Maryland Park Service, and Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC works well for travelers combining a bay trip with a capital-region visit.
Most sites in the area accommodate RVs of moderate length, though larger rigs should confirm road access and hookup availability before booking.
Things to do near Long Beach
The Chesapeake Bay defines most recreation in the area. Fossil hunting along Calvert Cliffs, swimming at protected bay beaches, kayaking on tidal creeks, and crabbing off public piers are staples for families. Calvert Cliffs State Park is a short drive north and offers a flat trail to a beach where shark teeth wash up in the sand.
Historic sites include the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, the Drum Point Lighthouse, and several small maritime villages along Route 4 and Route 2. Solomons Island itself has a walkable waterfront with restaurants and boat rentals.
For forested day trips, Cedarville State Forest offers marked hiking trails, a fish hatchery, and wildlife viewing. Golf courses, wineries, and the Patuxent River water trail round out the options for longer stays.

The camping season in southern Maryland runs primarily from spring through fall. Cedarville State Forest's Campground is open from April to October, and most private campgrounds in the region follow a similar window, though some coastal parks open earlier and close later depending on weather. Winter camping options are limited, and many facilities shut off water lines once freezing temperatures arrive.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill quickly, and from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day there is a two-night minimum stay, with holiday weekends requiring a three-night minimum at Maryland state park campgrounds. Humidity is high in July and August, and afternoon thunderstorms are common.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel. Bugs are lighter, temperatures are milder, and reservation pressure eases outside of holiday weekends. Fall also brings clearer air and lower humidity along the bay.
How to book campgrounds near Long Beach
Reservations for Maryland state park sites, including Cedarville State Forest - Family, are handled through the Maryland Park Service. Reservations can be made by calling 1-888-432-2267, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and online at parkreservations.maryland.gov, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance of the date of arrival, and popular summer weekends can sell out shortly after release.
Private campgrounds such as Taylors Island Family Campgrounds, Take It Easy Campground, Coles Point Marina and RV Resort, and Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC accept reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Waterfront and pull-through sites tend to book first.
Campers should also note that stays are limited to 14 cumulative nights in Maryland State Park campgrounds during any 21-day period, and campers who reach that limit must vacate for at least seven consecutive days before re-registering.
What to expect
Sites in the Long Beach area range from primitive forest loops to full-hookup waterfront resorts. At Cedarville State Forest - Family, campsites on the inner loop are equipped with electric, sites on the outer loop are primitive, and the bathhouse is located within the center of the loop with water spigots throughout. Private parks like Coles Point Marina and RV Resort typically offer water, sewer, and electric hookups along with boat access.
Expect wooded, insect-heavy conditions in summer. Ticks and mosquitoes are common in forested sites, and jellyfish appear in bay waters from July into September. Cell service is generally reliable along Route 4 and thinner in deeper forest areas.
Wildlife is active. Deer, raccoons, and box turtles are frequent visitors, so food should be stored securely. Pet policies vary by loop and by park, so confirm at booking.

For a typical 200-mile weekend loop from Long Beach to Solomons Island and back, plan on about $60 to $120 in fuel depending on the rig. Pro tip: fill up at the larger stations on MD-4 near Prince Frederick before heading south, since stops get sparser toward Point Lookout.
