Campgrounds and RV parks near Lusby, MD

Calvert Cliffs State Park is the headline stop, with a two-mile trail to a Chesapeake Bay beach where visitors hunt for fossilized shark teeth eroding out of the Miocene cliffs. Solomons Island, ten minutes south, offers the Calvert Marine Museum, the Drum Point Lighthouse, and a walkable boardwalk lined with seafood restaurants. On the water, charter boats out of Solomons run rockfish and bluefish trips on the Bay, and kayak launches dot the Patuxent. History-focused travelers can drive south to Point Lookout State Park to tour the Civil War prison-camp site and lighthouse, or cross to St. Mary's City for the reconstructed colonial capital. Inland, Cedarville State Forest - Family offers hiking, a fishing pond, and quiet hardwood trails away from the shore.

The RV season in southern Maryland runs roughly April through October, matching the calendar of most public campgrounds. Cedarville State Forest's Campground is open from April to October, and other Maryland state park loops follow a similar window. Private resorts along the Bay and Potomac generally open earlier in spring and stay open into late fall. Summer is peak season. Weekends fill quickly, and from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day there is a two-night minimum stay, and holiday weekends require a three-night minimum stay at Maryland state parks. Expect heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Biting flies can be heavy on the marshy stretches near Point Lookout in mid to late summer. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures, lower humidity, and better availability. Fall is also striped bass season on the Bay, which drives strong demand at waterfront sites. Winter camping is limited to a handful of year-round private parks.

Site types vary widely across the region. State parks lean toward wooded, back-in sites with electric hookups on inner loops and primitive sites on outer loops; private waterfront resorts tend to offer full hookups, longer pads, and amenities such as pools, boat ramps, and camp stores. Rig-size limits matter here. The narrow camp road at Cedarville requires careful navigation when backing RVs into sites, with a 35-foot length limit for recreational vehicles. Larger Class A coaches and long fifth-wheels are better suited to the private resorts along the Bay and Potomac. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Lusby and Solomons but can drop off inside the state forest. Expect mosquitoes and ticks in warmer months, brackish-water breezes near the shore, and occasional deer and turkey sightings on the forested loops.
