RV camping near Mitchellville, Maryland
Mitchellville sits in Prince George's County, inside the Capital Beltway's eastern arc and about a half-hour drive from downtown Washington, D.C. For RV renters, that location is the point: the town works as a quiet base for exploring the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums, and Chesapeake Bay attractions without parking a rig in the city itself.
Campground options within a short drive cover the full range. Greenbelt Park Campground is a National Park Service site offering 172 campground sites with showers and restrooms, with reservations required, while Cherry Hill Park in College Park is a large full-service private resort geared to DC visitors. Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday offer family-oriented amenities north of the city.
For a quieter, more wooded stay, Cedarville State Forest - Family lies south in Charles and Prince George's counties and provides state-forest camping close enough to reach the capital on a day trip.
Things to do around Mitchellville
The main draw is Washington, D.C. Most nearby campgrounds sit near Metro stations or run shuttles, so RV renters can leave the rig on-site and ride into the city for the Smithsonian museums, the National Zoo, the monuments, and the U.S. Capitol. The Washington, D.C. Metro Transit System (Greenbelt Station) is just 1.5 miles from Greenbelt Park, making car-free days easy.
Closer to Mitchellville, Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are a short drive away, and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor Center in Greenbelt is free and family-friendly. Watkins Regional Park has a carousel, miniature train, and nature center.
Outdoor options include hiking the ten miles of trails at Greenbelt Park, including the Perimeter, Azalea, Dogwood and Blueberry Trails, paddling and birding along the Patuxent River, and exploring Chesapeake Bay towns like Annapolis, about 30 minutes east. Cedarville State Forest offers trails, campsites, a fishing pond, hunting land, and picnic areas, with trails available for hikers, bikers and horse riders.

Central Maryland has four distinct seasons. Summers run warm to hot with high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August. The region sits within the Atlantic hurricane belt, so tropical systems can occasionally affect travel from August through October.
Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV trips. Daytime temperatures are comfortable, humidity drops, and cherry blossoms in late March or early April draw heavy demand around DC. Fall foliage in October and November brings a second surge of interest, especially at wooded state-forest sites.
Winters are cool rather than severe. Snow falls a few times each season but rarely closes campgrounds. Several private parks stay open year-round, and Greenbelt Park Campground typically operates year-round with reservations required through Recreation.gov. Cedarville State Forest's Campground is open from April to October, so late-fall and winter trips concentrate on the private parks near the Beltway.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

Both VANessa and Vanessa were awesome. All the amenities are thoughtfully available. Van drove well and my son and I had a trip we’ll talk about for years and remember forever. Vanessa is a great communicator and great person. 5+ stars.

Had an amazing travel experience with VANessa and Vanessa was a joy to work with. So very accommodating. The van is beautiful and has everything you could want. Even my pup Seamus gave it two paws up!

How to book
Reservation systems vary by operator. For Greenbelt Park Campground, bookings open six months in advance through the Recreation.gov website or call center. Cedarville State Forest's family campground is open April to October, with online reservations at parkreservations.maryland.gov. A two-night minimum stay applies from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and holiday weekends require a three-night minimum.
Private parks book direct. Cherry Hill Park, the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday, and Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC accept reservations through their own websites, and they fill quickly around cherry-blossom season, Memorial Day, July 4, and school breaks.
For RV renters, confirm rig length limits, hookup type, and whether the site requires back-in or offers pull-through access before finalizing.
What to expect on arrival
Traffic on I-495, I-95, and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway is heavy on weekday mornings and afternoons. Plan arrivals midday or on weekends when possible, and factor in extra time for the last few miles into any campground near the Beltway.
Site types differ sharply. Private parks near DC offer full hookups, laundry, pools, and shuttle or Metro access, while Greenbelt Park and Cedarville State Forest are more rustic. At Cedarville, campsites on the inner loop are equipped with electric, and sites on the outer loop are primitive. At Greenbelt, narrow one-way loop roads require backing into sites, and some areas have low-hanging branches that challenge larger rigs.
A tick notice applies in the Mid-Atlantic region in spring and summer, so bring repellent, and expect firewood to be sold on-site to prevent moving pests between regions.

Maryland only requires a non-commercial Class B license for very large motorhomes, which excludes nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel listed on the platform. Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the individual host. You can review the full policy in the RVezy Help Center before you confirm payment, and refunds depend on how far in advance of your trip you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook with travel credits. Special circumstances such as hurricanes or major winter storms are reviewed by the RVezy support team. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Mitchellville-area rigs for summer Ocean City trips, then adjust if your plans shift.

Pro tip: message the host before booking to share your pet's size and breed so check-in is smooth.
nps.gov/gree/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Mitchellville?
Yes, RV delivery in Mitchellville is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a big rig through DC-area traffic. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome rental in Mitchellville to nearby campgrounds like Cherry Hill Park in College Park, Duncan's Family Campground in Lothian, or directly to your driveway or vacation rental. They will level the RV, hook up water, sewer, and electric, and walk you through every system before leaving. Delivery fees typically run about $2 to $4 per mile round trip. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery on RVezy to instantly see which hosts offer this service.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mitchellville%2C%20MarylandHow far can I travel on a Mitchellville RV rental, and is there unlimited mileage?
Mileage policies are set by each host, but plenty of Mitchellville-area listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, while others include a generous 100 to 150 free miles per night with a small per-mile charge after that (usually $0.30 to $0.45). Either option easily covers popular RV road trips from Mitchellville: Assateague Island National Seashore (about 140 miles east), Shenandoah National Park (110 miles west), Gettysburg, PA (75 miles north), or Harpers Ferry, WV (70 miles northwest). Pro tip: if you're planning a big loop through Virginia or up to New England, sort listings by mileage policy and message the host to confirm the best deal for your route.

Duncan's Family Campground in Lothian sits about 25 minutes south with shaded sites, fishing ponds, and family activities. Greenbelt Park, a National Park Service campground about 15 minutes away, offers 174 wooded sites at budget-friendly rates. Patuxent River Park in Upper Marlboro is great for nature lovers. Pro tip: weekend sites at Cherry Hill book up fast in summer, so reserve 2 to 3 months ahead for the best pick.
nps.gov/gree/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Mitchellville?
Mitchellville's sweet spot for RV camping runs from mid-April through late October, with spring and fall offering the most comfortable conditions. Expect highs around 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit in April, May, September, and October, perfect for hiking and sightseeing without summer's humidity. Summers (June through August) hit the high 80s to low 90s with occasional thunderstorms, so an RV with reliable air conditioning is your friend. Winters are mild compared to New England, with average highs in the 40s, and many local campgrounds like Cherry Hill Park stay open year-round. Pro tip: October is magical for a Mitchellville RV trip thanks to fall foliage along the Patuxent and crisp campfire nights.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be comfortable picking one up in Mitchellville?
You'll do great, and first time renting an RV is exactly what RVezy hosts are used to handling. Every Mitchellville host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, generator, and dumping tanks. You can also message your host with questions before booking and during the trip. If you'd rather skip the highway driving entirely, choose a host who delivers, sets up, and picks up the RV for you. Pro tip: a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer is the easiest starting point for first-timers, and they handle the Beltway and Route 50 to Ocean City without drama.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/towing-a-trailerWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Mitchellville on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance through the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on I-495, a dead battery at Greenbelt Park, or a tow off Route 301 is just a phone call away. Your host is your first line of support for questions about the RV's systems, and most respond within minutes by text or in-app message. The RVezy support team is also reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save your host's number and the RVezy support contact in your phone before you pull out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Mitchellville RV rental into Canada or other states?
Interstate travel is wide open: from Mitchellville you can easily explore Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, and beyond with no extra paperwork. Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection coverage, so message the host directly from the listing page to confirm before booking, plus a valid passport. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection package does not extend there. Pro tip: a popular RV road trip from Mitchellville is the coastal loop, Assateague Island to Cape Henlopen to Cape May ferry, all within 200 miles and entirely within the US.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Mitchellville RV trip?
Plan around realistic fuel economy and you'll have no budget surprises. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A motorhomes typically run 7 to 10 MPG. Maryland gas prices have recently averaged around $3.20 to $3.60 per gallon, with diesel a bit higher. For a typical 4-day, 400-mile loop from Mitchellville to Assateague and back in a Class C, expect roughly $100 to $140 in fuel. Pro tip: the Costco off Route 301 in Bowie and the Wawa stations along Route 50 consistently offer some of the lowest gas prices in Prince George's County.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Mitchellville?
For the best campgrounds near Mitchellville, lead time matters. Maryland State Parks like Patapsco Valley and Cunningham Falls open reservations through the state's official ReserveAmerica-powered portal up to 12 months out and fill summer weekends quickly, especially for holiday weekends. National Park sites like Greenbelt Park and Assateague Island National Seashore book on Recreation.gov 6 months ahead. Private parks like Cherry Hill Park and Duncan's typically need 2 to 3 months for peak season. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, Sunday-through-Thursday arrivals almost always have openings even in July, and rates are often 10 to 20 percent lower than Friday-Saturday pricing.
parkreservations.maryland.gov/What are driving conditions like around Mitchellville and the DC area?
Mitchellville sits in a manageable suburban pocket of Prince George's County, but you'll want a smart plan for the busier roads nearby. I-495 (the Capital Beltway) and I-95 see heavy commuter traffic from 6 to 10 AM and 3 to 7 PM, so time your departures around it. Route 50 east toward the Bay Bridge and Ocean City backs up badly on summer Friday afternoons and Sunday returns. The roads themselves are flat, well-paved, and easy for any RV. Avoid driving into downtown DC, where the 12.5-foot height limit on many bridges and tunnels is a concern. Pro tip: leave Mitchellville by 9 AM Saturday for stress-free Bay Bridge crossings.
chart.maryland.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Mitchellville?
Local campgrounds make life easy. Most private parks within an hour of Mitchellville, including Cherry Hill Park and Duncan's Family Campground, offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, hot showers, and dump stations. Greenbelt Park has a centralized dump station and potable water fill. Maryland State Parks typically provide electric hookups but no sewer at the site, with shared dump stations near the exits. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 25-foot sewer hose, since site spacing in older Maryland parks can be longer than the short hoses most rigs include.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/camping.aspxWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in Mitchellville?
Mitchellville RV rentals come ready for adventure. Whether you choose a campervan rental in Mitchellville or a full Class A, expect comfortable beds (most rigs sleep 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower in nearly all Class B, C, and A motorhomes and most travel trailers. Air conditioning, heat, and seatbelted seating for travel are standard. Many hosts also include a generator, outdoor speakers, awning, camp chairs, and basic kitchenware. TV and Wi-Fi hotspots are common add-ons. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host if you need something specific like a Pack 'n Play or beach gear for that Assateague trip.
nhtsa.gov/equipment/recreational-vehiclesWhat popular add-ons and options can I get with my Mitchellville RV rental?
Hosts in the Mitchellville area offer a range of add-ons that make trips easier. Common options include linen and kitchen packages, generator usage hours, bike and kayak racks, outdoor grills, portable fire pits, and pet cleaning fees. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup, including hookups at Cherry Hill Park or Greenbelt Park. Pickup and dropoff windows are typically arranged with the host, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough orientation built in. Mileage allowances vary by listing, with unlimited mileage available from some hosts. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking instead of last-minute so everything is confirmed and reserved for your dates.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mitchellville%2C%20MarylandHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A security deposit is held separately on your card before the trip, typically ranging from about $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, and it's released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Avoid holds by returning the RV clean, with tanks emptied and fuel topped up to the agreed level. Pro tip: photograph the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, a two-minute habit that has saved countless Mitchellville renters from disputes.
