Campgrounds and RV parks near Oxford, MD

Water activities dominate the area. Anglers, paddlers, and crabbers use the Choptank River, Tuckahoe Creek, and the Chesapeake Bay itself. Fishing, paddling, and bank-side crabbing along the Choptank River draw many visitors to Martinak State Park, and a boat launch gives anglers and kayakers direct water access, with the park's position at the confluence of the Choptank River and Watts Creek meaning there are multiple spots to cast a line or put in a kayak. On land, Tuckahoe State Park offers the widest trail network on this stretch of the Eastern Shore. The park offers 20 miles of scenic hiking, biking and equestrian trails, flat water canoeing, hunting, picnicking, as well as a recycled tire playground for children. Adkins Arboretum occupies 400 acres within the park boundary and displays vegetation indigenous to the Delmarva region. Day trips from an Oxford-area basecamp can include the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge for birding, the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry, and the historic streets of St. Michaels and Cambridge.

The peak RV window on the Eastern Shore runs from late spring through early fall. Busiest camping season at Martinak State Park is from April to October. Sites at both Martinak and Tuckahoe fill quickly on summer weekends and around federal holidays, so early booking is important for those dates. Shoulder seasons are quieter and often more comfortable for touring. Spring brings mild temperatures, wildflowers, and active fishing on the Choptank, while fall offers cooler nights, fewer insects, and migrating waterfowl through the Chesapeake flyway. Winter may not be included in the park's peak camping season, but December at Martinak is a time of holiday programming such as Santa's Chase, a two-mile illuminated trail that families can walk or jog through. Winter access varies by park. The season at Martinak runs March through November, and private campgrounds along the bay set their own seasonal schedules, so confirm dates before booking a cold-weather trip.

Expect flat, wooded, or waterfront terrain rather than mountain scenery. State park sites are typically shaded and level with basic hookups. Tuckahoe offers well-maintained facilities across two camping loops, one for tents and cabins and another with 30-amp electric hookups for RVs. Water hookups are not available at individual sites, but potable water is located around each loop, a central bathhouse provides showers and toilet facilities, and a dump station is available for trailer use. At Martinak, most sites offer 30-amp electric, each has a picnic table and fire ring, and a dump station is on site. Pets are welcome but must remain on a leash at all times. Cell reception can be limited inside Tuckahoe, so plan accordingly. Bring bug spray in summer, since marsh mosquitoes and biting flies are common near the water. Grocery runs are short from either state park. The town of Denton is about five minutes from Martinak, with a grocery store, Walmart, gas stations, and restaurants within easy reach.
