The area works well as a base for families combining sightseeing in the capital with time outdoors.
Close-in options include Greenbelt Park Campground, a National Park Service site about ten miles from D.C., and Cherry Hill Park in College Park, a private RV park with full hookups and transit access to the city. For a more rural feel, Cedarville State Forest sits south in Charles County, and Smallwood State Park runs along Mattawoman Creek near the Potomac.
Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC rounds out the nearby options for families wanting resort-style amenities. Together these campgrounds cover the range from primitive tent loops to full-hookup RV sites, so trip planning usually comes down to how close to the city and how developed a site the group wants.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for camping in the Oxon Hill area. Late March through May brings blooming cherry trees on the Tidal Basin, milder days, and generally lower humidity, though rain showers are frequent. Fall, roughly late September through early November, delivers cool nights, foliage color in the state forests, and fewer bugs.
Summer runs hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. A tick advisory applies across the Mid-Atlantic in spring and summer, so campers should take precautions such as using tick repellent. Mosquitoes can be heavy in the wooded state parks, especially in August.
Season lengths vary by campground. Greenbelt Park Campground is open year-round, while Cedarville State Forest's campground is open from April to October. Peak demand runs from late May through Labor Day and around cherry blossom season, when close-in D.C. campgrounds fill first.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

How to book campgrounds near Oxon Hill
National Park Service and state park systems handle most public reservations. At Greenbelt Park, campers may book up to 6 months in advance through Recreation.gov or the call center at 1-877-444-6777. Payment is not accepted on site.
Maryland state parks use their own reservation system. Reservations at Smallwood State Park can be made up to 12 months in advance by calling 1-888-432-CAMP (2267) Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Cedarville State Forest books through the same Maryland Park Service system. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day there is a two-night minimum stay, and holiday weekends require a three-night minimum.
Private parks like Cherry Hill Park and Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC book directly through their own websites, and summer weekends can fill weeks ahead.
What to expect on-site
Amenity levels vary sharply. Greenbelt Park does not have water or electric hookups at sites, though the campground has flush toilets, drinking water, showers, and a dump station. RV limit is 30 feet in B Loop and up to 35 feet in D Loop, so larger rigs should check length restrictions before booking.
State parks fall in between. Smallwood's campground has RV and tent sites under a hardwood canopy, each with 50-amp electric and water hookups, a picnic table, a lantern post, and a fire ring with a grill attachment. At Cedarville State Forest, sites on the inner loop have electric hookups, while sites on the outer loop are primitive, with a dump station and water fill near the entrance.
Cherry Hill Park is the most developed option, with full-hookup RV sites, shaded tent spaces, and glamping accommodations, plus access to pools, a hot tub, splash park, café, and dog park.

Pricing depends on RV type, season, and add-ons. To find a cheap RV rental Oxon Hill travelers love, book mid-week trips, target shoulder seasons like March or October, and filter for travel trailers if you have a tow vehicle. Pro tip: National Harbor events and Cherry Blossom season drive prices up, so booking 2-3 months ahead locks in better rates.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oxon%20Hill%2C%20MarylandWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Oxon Hill?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Oxon Hill, MD. Maryland does not require a special endorsement or commercial driver's license (CDL) for personal RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes. You will need to be 25 or older with a valid license from any U.S. state or Canadian province. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before your trip. RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so the process takes just a few minutes. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward it is to get behind the wheel.

Booking an RV rental Maryland trip is genuinely low-risk because RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy that applies to every booking. There is a money-back grace period after you book, giving you breathing room to confirm plans. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far in advance you cancel, which is helpful given the Mid-Atlantic's occasional hurricane remnants in late summer. Cancellation details are handled directly through RVezy's platform and support team, not the host. Pro tip: if a tropical system threatens your week, contact RVezy support early so they can guide you through your options.

Pro tip: message the host before booking if you have a large breed or more than one pet, since some listings have pet limits or small cleaning fees. Your pup is going to love this trip as much as you do.
nps.gov/gree/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to me in Oxon Hill?
Yes, RV delivery Oxon Hill is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers nervous about driving inside the Capital Beltway (I-495). Many hosts will deliver the RV directly to your campground, hotel, or even a private driveway in Prince George's County, set it up with hookups, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. This is a game-changer if you're staying at Cherry Hill Park in College Park, Greenbelt Park, or Pohick Bay just across the river in Virginia. Delivery fees are typically based on distance, so closer drop-offs cost less. Pro tip: filter for Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your exact address to get a precise quote.

nps.gov/gree/planyourvisit/campground.htmWhen is the best time for an Oxon Hill RV trip?
April through early June and September through October are hands-down the best windows for an Oxon Hill RV trip. Spring brings the famous Cherry Blossoms (peak bloom usually late March to early April) with daytime highs in the 60s-70s°F. Fall delivers golden foliage along the Potomac and crisp 55-75°F days, perfect for campground evenings around a fire. Summers are hot and humid, often hitting 90°F with heavy thunderstorms, so plan AC-heavy nights at full-hookup parks. Winters dip to 30-45°F but stay drivable, with bargain rates and quiet campgrounds. Pro tip: book mid-April for Cherry Blossom magic or mid-October for peak Shenandoah leaf-peeping just two hours west.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay?
You'll be more than okay, in fact, first time renting an RV in the DC metro area is easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, water systems, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures so nothing is a mystery. You can also message the host through the listing page before booking with any questions about driving in Maryland traffic. If city driving feels intimidating, choose delivery and skip the I-495 stress entirely. RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they drive more like a large van than a bus.
roads.maryland.gov/Index.aspxWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is always one call away. Every RV rental in Oxon Hill, MD booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. If you have a mechanical issue near the Wilson Bridge or out on I-95, one phone call gets a technician dispatched. Your host is also a great first contact for questions about specific RV systems, and most respond quickly. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip for anything else. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you have it handy if you ever need to call for help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Oxon Hill?
An RV road trip from Oxon Hill puts some of America's most iconic destinations within a tank or two of fuel. Head west 100 miles to Shenandoah National Park for Skyline Drive's 105-mile mountain ride. Drive 140 miles east to Assateague Island National Seashore, where wild ponies roam right past your campsite. Go 90 miles north to Gettysburg for Civil War battlefields and rolling Pennsylvania farmland. Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware is 130 miles away and ideal for a beach weekend. Heading north to Acadia or south to the Outer Banks is also doable with a longer mileage package. Pro tip: leave Oxon Hill before 9 AM or after 7 PM to dodge Beltway traffic on any route.
nps.gov/asis/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on an Oxon Hill RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on any RV trip, so let's make it predictable. Most Class C motorhomes get 8-10 MPG, travel trailers pulled by a truck average 10-12 MPG, and campervan rental Oxon Hill options can hit 18-20 MPG. Maryland gas prices typically run a few cents above the national average, hovering around $3.30-$3.70 per gallon in the DC metro. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, budget roughly $120-$150 for fuel. Pro tip: fill up in suburban Maryland or Virginia rather than inside the DC line, where prices spike. Apps like GasBuddy help you find the cheapest stations along your route, and topping off before returning the RV avoids host refueling fees.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Oxon Hill?
Book early and you will thank yourself later. For best campgrounds near Oxon Hill like Cherry Hill Park, reserve 2-3 months ahead for spring Cherry Blossom season and summer weekends. Greenbelt Park bookings go through Recreation.gov and open up to 6 months in advance, so set a reminder if you are targeting a holiday weekend. Maryland state parks like Patapsco Valley and Cunningham Falls use the Maryland Park Service reservation system, which opens reservations months out. Pohick Bay in Virginia uses the NOVA Parks reservation portal. Pro tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday-Wednesday) are far easier to book and often $10-$20 cheaper per night than Friday-Saturday at the same campground.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233907What are the driving conditions like around Oxon Hill?
Driving an RV around Oxon Hill is very manageable as long as you plan around rush hour. The Capital Beltway (I-495) and I-295 carry heavy commuter traffic 6-10 AM and 3-7 PM weekdays, so aim to travel outside those windows. The Woodrow Wilson Bridge is RV-friendly with no height restrictions, but the lower roadways inside DC have several low bridges, so avoid downtown DC entirely in a tall RV. Stay on the Beltway and major interstates for stress-free driving. Winters bring occasional ice and snow, mostly January-February. Pro tip: use Waze or Google Maps' truck/RV routing if available, and never follow GPS into Rock Creek Parkway or other car-only DC routes that ban commercial vehicles and tall trailers.
chart.maryland.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near Oxon Hill offer?
Campgrounds near Oxon Hill range from full-service resorts to rustic NPS-run sites, so you can pick exactly what you want. Cherry Hill Park offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), a pool, dog park, Wi-Fi, laundry, and even a Metro shuttle into DC. Pohick Bay Regional Park has electric and water hookups, a dump station, hot showers, and a boat launch. Greenbelt Park is more rustic with no hookups but offers a centralized dump station, potable water fill, and clean bathhouses. For dumping mid-trip, most Maryland state parks have stations available for a small fee even if you're not camping there. Pro tip: top off fresh water at your campground before heading out, since fill stations on the road can be scarce in the Mid-Atlantic.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat's included inside the RV?
Most motorhome rental Oxon Hill listings come fully equipped so you can show up and start your trip. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable beds (most Class Cs sleep 4-6), air conditioning, heating, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, generator, outdoor awning, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots. Linens, kitchen kits, camp chairs, and outdoor mats are often available as add-ons. Each listing's page details exactly what's included and what's optional. Pro tip: for a summer family RV trip Oxon Hill, confirm the AC works on both shore power and generator, since August humidity in the DC area makes overnight cooling essential.
energy.gov/energysaver/recreational-vehicle-cooling-and-heatingWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts on RVezy offer a range of add-ons that make your Oxon Hill trip easier. Common options include kitchen kits, bedding packages, outdoor camping chairs and tables, bike racks, generators, and pre-stocked propane. Instant Book listings let you confirm without waiting on host approval, which is great if your trip is days away. Pickup is usually at the host's location in or near Oxon Hill, and many hosts offer delivery to nearby campgrounds, hotels, or BWI/Reagan airports for a fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, with daily caps and add-on packages clearly shown. Pro tip: if you are flying into DCA or BWI, ask about airport delivery, it removes the rental car step entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oxon%20Hill%2C%20MarylandHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through RVezy's secure platform, so you will never exchange cash or e-transfers with the host. You pay at the time of booking using a credit or debit card. A security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before the trip starts, typically $500-$1,500 depending on the RV's value, and released after a smooth return. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup, take date-stamped photos of the exterior and interior, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if required. Pro tip: keep gas receipts from your final fill-up near Oxon Hill as proof you returned it topped off.
