Camping near Rawlings, Maryland
Rawlings sits along the Potomac River in Allegany County, in the mountain corridor of Western Maryland between Cumberland and Oldtown. The area is defined by ridge-and-valley terrain, the C&O Canal towpath, and the surrounding Green Ridge State Forest. RV travelers use Rawlings as a base for river access, rail-trail cycling, and low-key mountain camping without the crowds of the Shenandoah or Deep Creek Lake corridors.
Campground options within a short drive range from primitive federal sites to full-hookup private parks. Spring Gap Campground sits at Mile 173.3 on the C&O Canal Towpath near Cumberland, with 12 single drive-in campsites and two group sites. Private options in the surrounding hills include Eagle's Nest Campground, Middle Ridge Campground, Sleepy Hollow Campground, and Millesons Walnut Grove Campground.
The closest services are in Cumberland, roughly 15 minutes north, which has fuel, groceries, propane, and the C&O Canal National Historical Park visitor center.
Things to do around Rawlings
The C&O Canal towpath is the anchor activity. The most popular activities for campers in this corridor are hiking local trails, biking the C&O Canal Towpath, paddling, and fishing. Spring Gap has a boat ramp for easy access to the Potomac River for kayakers, canoeists, and anglers. The flat, crushed-limestone towpath runs 184.5 miles and is well suited to family cycling and stroller-friendly walks.
Green Ridge State Forest, immediately east, offers mountain biking, hunting in season, and shooting range access. A Maryland Fishing License is required for anglers age 16 or older on the Potomac or interior streams.
In Cumberland, families visit the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, the Allegany Museum, the Gordon-Roberts House, and the Gilchrist Gallery. The C&O Canal National Historical Park Cumberland Visitor Center is open seven days a week.

41° / 23°F 65 mmCold and snowy; NPS water shut off, arrive self-contained
The prime RV window runs from mid-April through mid-November. Spring Gap Campground is open year-round through Recreation.gov, but hand-pump water is only turned on from April 15 through November 1, so winter campers must arrive fully self-contained.
Summer brings warm, humid days and afternoon thunderstorms typical of the Mid-Atlantic. In Cumberland, summers are warm and humid, winters are cold and snowy, and skies are partly cloudy year round. Bugs peak in June and July along the river, and higher elevations in Green Ridge stay noticeably cooler.
Fall is the standout season for this corridor, with ridge-line color typically peaking in mid to late October and lighter towpath traffic than summer weekends. Winter camping is possible but demands cold-weather gear: expect freezing overnight lows, potential snow, and reduced facilities. Spring can be wet, and low-lying towpath sections occasionally flood after heavy Potomac rain events.
How to book campgrounds near Rawlings
National Park Service sites in the area use the federal reservation system. Reservations are required to camp at Spring Gap Campground and all other drive-in campgrounds within the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Cash on arrival is not accepted. Reservations can be made online up to six months in advance at Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777, with a credit or debit card required.
Private campgrounds such as Eagle's Nest Campground, Sleepy Hollow Campground, Middle Ridge Campground, and Millesons Walnut Grove Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Book summer holiday weekends and fall foliage weekends four to eight weeks ahead.
At Spring Gap, check-in is 1 PM, check-out is 12 PM, quiet hours run 10 PM to 6 AM, and stays are limited to 14 consecutive days between May 1 and October 1.
What to expect on-site
Sites in this corridor skew rustic. Campsites at Spring Gap Campground can accommodate tent campers, small RVs, and other self-contained sleeping vehicles. Trailers can be no longer than 20 feet, and the road through the campground ends in a loop, so turning around with a large vehicle is manageable. Pit and portable toilets are available, and hand-pump water runs April 15 through November 1. There are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at NPS sites, and trash service is not provided, so campers must pack out waste.
Larger rigs and travelers who want hookups should target the private parks in the surrounding valleys, which typically offer 30/50-amp service, dump stations, and shower houses.
Cell coverage is spotty in the river gap and inside Green Ridge State Forest. Download maps offline before arrival and expect train noise from the CSX line paralleling the Potomac.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Rawlings RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's easy to plan for. In Western Maryland, gas typically runs around $3.10 to $3.60 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. A Class B campervan rental Rawlings averages 18 to 22 MPG, a Class C motorhome runs 8 to 12 MPG, and a truck pulling a travel trailer comes in around 9 to 13 MPG. For a 300-mile loop through Deep Creek Lake and Rocky Gap, expect to spend roughly $80 to $130 in fuel on a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Cumberland or LaVale where prices tend to be lower than at the I-68 exits closer to the West Virginia line.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Rawlings?
Booking early is the move, especially for the most-loved spots. Maryland State Parks like Rocky Gap open reservations up to 12 months in advance through ParkReservations.Maryland.gov, and summer weekends and October leaf-peeping weekends often fill within hours of release. For National Park Service sites along the C&O Canal (Spring Gap, Fifteenmile Creek), use Recreation.gov, where bookings open 6 months ahead on a rolling basis. Private parks like Little Orleans Campground take direct reservations and usually have more flexibility. Pro tip: aim to lock in Rocky Gap waterfront sites 4 to 6 months out, and have a backup like Green Ridge State Forest's primitive sites ready as plan B.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Rawlings, MD?
Driving an RV around Rawlings is refreshingly manageable. I-68 (the National Freeway) runs right through the area with wide lanes, gentle grades compared to other Appalachian routes, and plenty of pull-offs, perfect for first-timers. You will encounter some mountain grades heading west toward Frostburg and Deep Creek Lake (notably Big Savage Mountain at 2,800 feet elevation), so downshift on descents and take it slow. Winter (December to March) can bring snow and black ice, so check the Maryland 511 traffic system before you head out. Avoid the narrow back roads of Green Ridge State Forest with bigger rigs, stick to MD-51 and US-40 Alt for scenic routes that big motorhomes handle easily.

Western Maryland campgrounds make RV life easy. Rocky Gap State Park offers electric hookups (30/50 amp), potable water fills, hot showers, a dump station, and lakefront swimming. Spring Gap and Fifteenmile Creek along the C&O Canal are more primitive (vault toilets, hand-pump water, no hookups) but stunning. For full hookups including sewer at each site, head to private parks like Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Hagerstown (about an hour east) or Rocky Gap Casino RV area. Need a dump station mid-trip? The Sheetz in LaVale and several stations along I-68 in Cumberland accommodate RVs. Top off fresh water in Cumberland before heading deeper into Green Ridge, where services thin out.

Many listings also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and a generator for boondocking in Green Ridge State Forest. WiFi is hit-or-miss in the Allegheny Mountains, so don't count on streaming, but cell signal is decent along I-68. Check each listing's amenities list, hosts spell it out clearly.

consumer.ftc.gov/articles/renting-carHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Maryland through RVezy, you pay the rental cost, protection plan fee, and any service fees right on the platform using a credit or debit card, no cash exchanged with the host. Most hosts also require a refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig), which is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV is returned in good shape. To avoid issues, do a thorough pre-trip walk-around with the host, take date-stamped photos, follow the mileage and pet policies in your listing, and return the RV clean with the tanks emptied.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Rawlings during winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals are possible in Rawlings, and they unlock a quieter side of Western Maryland. Look for listings labeled four-season or with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a functioning furnace, then filter for shore power compatibility since you'll want to stay plugged in at 30 or 50-amp sites. Rocky Gap State Park keeps select sites open year-round with electric hookups, and the surrounding Allegheny Mountains are gorgeous under a dusting of snow. Temperatures dip into the 20s and 30s F (sometimes lower), so pack insulated boots, skirt the rig if your host allows, and keep a heated water hose handy. A family RV trip in Rawlings during winter is unforgettable.
