Campgrounds and RV parks near Solomons, MD

The Calvert Marine Museum, the Solomons boardwalk, and Riverwalk are walkable draws in town, and the fishing pier at the foot of the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge is a common stop for families. Charter boats and kayak rentals launch from the harbor for Patuxent River and Chesapeake trips. For day trips from a campsite, Point Lookout State Park offers swimming, sunbathing, hiking, and fishing, along with water trails for paddlers. Historic Fort Lincoln, which housed Confederate prisoners during the Civil War, sits within the park, with interpretive signs and rebuilt sections. The historic lighthouse at the Point has reopened for seasonal public tours after an extensive renovation. Cedarville State Forest adds inland hiking, a stocked pond, and quiet forested loops within an hour of Solomons.

The Solomons area follows a humid subtropical pattern. Summers are warm, muggy, and wet, while winters are cold and windy. The region sees significant rainfall year round, with no distinctive dry season, and midsummer is typically the wettest stretch, with rain on more than eighteen days in the wettest month on average. Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when waterfront sites fill quickly and Point Lookout can reach capacity. Day-use reservations are required at Point Lookout State Park beginning Memorial Day weekend on weekends and holidays, so day trippers visiting from other campgrounds should plan ahead. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with lower humidity, active fishing runs, and thinner crowds. Winter narrows the options: Cedarville State Forest closes its campground after October and does not reopen until April, and several private parks scale back or close as well. Late-summer and early-fall trips should also account for Atlantic tropical systems that can push rain and wind into the lower Chesapeake.

Sites near the water tend to be open, level, and exposed to Bay breezes, which helps with summer heat but leaves rigs in the sun. Inland options at Cedarville State Forest are shaded and quieter, with a more traditional forest-camping feel. Expect a mix of full hookup, water and electric, and non-hookup sites depending on the park. At Cedarville, inner-loop sites carry electric while outer-loop sites are primitive. Facilities vary. State park loops typically offer bathhouses and dump stations during peak season, and all Maryland state parks are trash-free, so campers pack out their garbage. Cell coverage is generally solid in town and along main highways, spottier deep in the forest and at the tip of Point Lookout. Wildlife is part of the experience: ospreys, bald eagles, deer, and heavy insect activity in midsummer. Bring bug protection, sun shade, and a plan for securing food.
