Campgrounds near Somerset, Maryland
Somerset is a small town in Montgomery County, tucked against the northwest edge of Washington, D.C. There are no campgrounds inside town limits, so RV travelers base out of parks in the surrounding DC metro area and southern Maryland, then commute in by vehicle or transit. The closest full-service option is Cherry Hill Park in College Park, roughly a half hour east, which markets itself as the closest RV park to the National Mall.
For a wooded National Park Service setting, Greenbelt Park Campground offers primitive sites about ten miles from downtown DC. Ramblin' Pines is a family-run park farther north in the Baltimore-Washington corridor and works well for travelers combining both cities.
South of the Beltway, Cedarville State Forest - Family and Smallwood State Park deliver quieter, forested Maryland state-park camping within about an hour's drive. Together these five parks cover the practical range for anyone visiting the capital region by RV.
Things to do near Somerset
The main draw is Washington, D.C. itself: the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, monuments, and the U.S. Capitol are all free to enter and reachable by Metro from stations near Cherry Hill Park and Greenbelt Park. Cherry Hill Park runs guided sightseeing tours and an express shuttle to the College Park Metro station, which removes the need to drive an RV into the city.
Outside the city, Greenbelt Park has about ten miles of wooded trails, including the Perimeter Trail. Cedarville State Forest offers roughly 19 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails plus a fishing pond, while Smallwood State Park sits on Mattawoman Creek with a marina, boat ramps, and picnic areas. Families can pair a day of monuments with an afternoon at Rock Creek Park, the National Zoo, or the C&O Canal towpath.

Spring is the headline season around Somerset. The cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin typically peak in late March or early April, and campgrounds fill quickly across those weekends. Weather is mild but variable, with rain showers common and thunderstorms building by May.
Summer brings hot, humid days and afternoon thunderstorms. Cherry Hill Park operates its pool, splash pad, and nightly sightseeing sessions in this window, and Cedarville State Forest enforces a two-night minimum from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with a three-night minimum on holiday weekends. Sites at the state parks and Greenbelt often book out weeks in advance for July and August.
Fall delivers the most comfortable camping conditions: warm days, cool nights, and lower humidity through September and October. Winter is the quiet season. Cedarville State Forest's campground is open only from April through October, while Greenbelt Park, Smallwood State Park, and Cherry Hill Park operate year-round with reduced amenities.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

Both VANessa and Vanessa were awesome. All the amenities are thoughtfully available. Van drove well and my son and I had a trip we’ll talk about for years and remember forever. Vanessa is a great communicator and great person. 5+ stars.

Had an amazing travel experience with VANessa and Vanessa was a joy to work with. So very accommodating. The van is beautiful and has everything you could want. Even my pup Seamus gave it two paws up!

How to book campgrounds near Somerset
Reservation systems vary by park type. Greenbelt Park Campground is a National Park Service site and books exclusively through Recreation.gov or the call center at 1-877-444-6777, on a rolling six-month window. Walk-in registration and cash payment on site are no longer accepted.
Cedarville State Forest and Smallwood State Park are Maryland state parks and reserve through parkreservations.maryland.gov or by phone at 1-888-432-2267. Online booking is available around the clock, and phone reservations run during weekday business hours.
Cherry Hill Park and Ramblin' Pines are privately operated and book directly through each park's own website. For cherry-blossom weekends, major DC events, and summer holiday weekends, reserve two to three months out. Off-season midweek stays are usually available on short notice.
What to expect on the ground
Hookups and rig size vary widely between parks. Cherry Hill Park offers full water, sewer, and electric with 30- and 50-amp service and cable TV, and accommodates rigs up to 45 feet across roughly 300 RV sites. Greenbelt Park is primitive, with no water or electric hookups at sites, though flush toilets, showers, and a dump station are available; the National Park Service recommends the D Loop for RVs, and vehicle length limits are listed per site on Recreation.gov.
At Cedarville State Forest, inner-loop sites have electric while outer-loop sites are primitive. Smallwood State Park's sites are electric-only, with a shared water spigot and a dump station near the entrance. Traffic around the Capital Beltway is heavy on weekdays, so plan arrivals for midday or evening. Ticks are common in wooded parks from spring through summer, and firewood is best purchased on site to limit pest spread.
