Campgrounds near South Kensington
South Kensington sits inside the Capital Beltway in Montgomery County, Maryland, roughly a dozen miles north of the National Mall. RV travelers use it as a suburban launch pad: close enough for day trips into Washington, D.C., yet within a short drive of wooded state and national park campgrounds. There is no campground inside South Kensington itself, so most visitors base out of properties in nearby Prince George's, Howard, Anne Arundel, or Carroll counties.
The closest full-service RV park is Cherry Hill Park in College Park, Maryland, which offers RV and tent sites along with cabins and cottages. For a quieter, forested option, Greenbelt Park Campground is a wooded National Park Service site about 10 miles from Washington, D.C., with a mix of tent and RV loops.
Farther out, Ramblin' Pines in Woodbine and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday in Millersville give access to Baltimore, Frederick, and Annapolis, while Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area anchors the Baltimore-side river corridor.
Things to do near South Kensington
Most trips revolve around Washington, D.C. Families ride Metro or a campground shuttle into the National Mall for the Smithsonian museums, the Capitol, the White House, and the monuments. The C&O Canal towpath and Rock Creek Park sit within a short drive of South Kensington and suit biking, walking, and stroller-friendly outings.
On the Baltimore side, Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area sits along the Patapsco River, with roughly 70 miles of hiking, biking, and multi-use trails across the wider park and water access for fishing and paddling. Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy are an easy day trip from the Millersville KOA.
On-site amenities matter for families: Cherry Hill Park has pools and a dog park, and Ramblin' Pines offers a seasonal pool and pond.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots. Late March through May brings cherry blossoms in D.C., mild temperatures, and manageable humidity, while September and October deliver cooler nights and fall color along the Patapsco Valley. Both shoulder seasons book heavily on weekends, especially during the Cherry Blossom Festival.
Summer runs hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. Family vacation demand peaks around Memorial Day, the July 4 fireworks on the National Mall, and Labor Day, and popular sites fill weeks in advance. Pools at private parks typically run from late May through early September, matching the Mid-Atlantic pool season.
Winter is the quiet season. Cherry Hill Park, Greenbelt, and the Capitol KOA operate year-round, while some state park loops and private parks reduce services or close entirely. The Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area campground has been closed for renovations, so verify current status before planning a stay there. Ticks are active from spring through fall across this region.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

Both VANessa and Vanessa were awesome. All the amenities are thoughtfully available. Van drove well and my son and I had a trip we’ll talk about for years and remember forever. Vanessa is a great communicator and great person. 5+ stars.

Had an amazing travel experience with VANessa and Vanessa was a joy to work with. So very accommodating. The van is beautiful and has everything you could want. Even my pup Seamus gave it two paws up!

How to book near South Kensington
Reservation systems vary by operator. Greenbelt Park Campground is booked through Recreation.gov or the call center at 1-877-444-6777. The campground takes year-round reservations up to six months in advance. Note the RV length limit: 30 feet including tow vehicle in B Loop, with limited availability for larger vehicles up to 35 feet in D Loop.
Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area is booked through the Maryland state system at parkreservations.maryland.gov, where reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 365 days in advance. The Hollofield campground has been closed for renovations, so confirm current status before booking.
Cherry Hill Park, Ramblin' Pines, and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday take reservations directly through their own websites.
What to expect near South Kensington
Traffic is the single biggest planning factor. The Capital Beltway congests during weekday rush hours, and towing a large rig through the I-495 / I-270 interchange near Bethesda is best avoided between 3 and 7 p.m. Most RV travelers park the rig at the campground and use Metro, MARC, or a campground shuttle to reach the city. The Greenbelt Metro station is about 1.5 miles from Greenbelt Park, and Cherry Hill Park has an on-site public transit connection into D.C.
Hookups and site style differ sharply. Cherry Hill Park and the KOA offer full hookups, cabins, and family amenities. Greenbelt is a primitive campground with no water or electric hookups at the sites, though the campground has flush toilets, drinking water, showers, and a dump station. Expect wooded, sometimes uneven pads at Ramblin' Pines and Patapsco Valley, and bring leveling blocks.
