Camping near Tilghman Island
Tilghman Island sits at the southern tip of Talbot County on Maryland's Eastern Shore, an authentic waterman's village bordered by the Chesapeake Bay and the Choptank River. The island itself is small and residential, so most RV travelers base at campgrounds on the mainland Eastern Shore or across the Bay Bridge, then day-trip in for seafood, charters, and sunset views over the water.
The closest RV-friendly option is Taylors Island Family Campgrounds, roughly across the bay south of Tilghman on another working waterman's island. Bay Shore Campground offers additional Eastern Shore waterfront-style camping within reasonable driving range. For travelers combining an island visit with a stop in the capital region, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday are common home bases on the western side of the Bay Bridge.
For state-land camping, Cedarville State Forest - Family provides a wooded, budget-friendly alternative in southern Maryland, useful for split-itinerary trips that pair the island with Washington-area sightseeing.
Things to do around Tilghman Island
The island is built around the water. Fishing boats head out at dawn, locals gather for crab feasts and docking contests, and visitors are welcomed with fresh seafood and quiet waterfront charm. Charter boats run out of the harbor for rockfish, crabbing, and sailing trips past historic Chesapeake lighthouses. Kayaks and paddleboards launch easily from public access points along the Choptank.
On land, biking the flat island roads is a family-friendly outing, and the Tilghman Watermen's Museum preserves this maritime heritage, sharing the stories and images of islanders whose livelihoods were built on the Bay. Nearby St. Michaels and Easton add maritime museums, small shops, and restaurants within a short drive.

Late spring through early fall is the practical camping window for this area. Waterfront campgrounds, charter operators, and seafood restaurants keep their fullest schedules from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and July is both the warmest and one of the wettest months on the Eastern Shore, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms.
State-run campgrounds follow a defined season. Cedarville State Forest's campground is open from April to October. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day there is a two-night minimum stay, and holiday weekends require a three-night minimum stay. Tilghman Island Day, held annually on the third Saturday in October, draws crowds across the region, so weekend sites book up early.
Winter brings raw Chesapeake wind and occasional snow. Most private waterfront campgrounds close or reduce services from November through March, and boat charters largely pause. Shoulder-season trips in April, May, September, and October generally offer the best balance of open sites, mild weather, and lower crowds.

Great host will consider using though with would select a smaller less luxurious vehicle. Was an excellent first-time experience.

The RV was everything we hoped for, it was spacious and well maintained. Kimberly was wonderful to work with, very responsive. Thank you for allowing us to rent your beautiful RV.

Good rental experience with this RV and also with the host, Oscar. Had a couple of Qs during the trip, and he responded quickly. Nice little travel trailer, fully stocked. Oscar provides an anti-sway trailer hitch, which increases travel & towing safety.
William P. - Jun 2025
Oscar was great! He walked me through everything and helped me get the trailer connected to the truck. The trailer was clean and everything we ran was functional (did not use the AC). Upon return the family was very responsive when I called when I dropped off the trailer. I would definitely rent from Oscar and family again!

How to book
Private campgrounds around Tilghman Island and the wider Eastern Shore, including Taylors Island Family Campgrounds and Bay Shore Campground, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Waterfront sites move first, so reserve summer weekends and holidays well in advance. KOA-branded properties such as Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday use the KOA reservation system.
Maryland state-land camping runs through a central system at parkreservations.maryland.gov, or by calling 1-888-432-2267 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sites can be reserved up to 365 days in advance. Campers are limited to 14 cumulative nights of camping in Maryland State Park campgrounds during any 21-day period, then must vacate for at least seven consecutive days before re-registering.
What to expect on site
Expect small-town scale. Tilghman Island itself has limited services: a handful of restaurants, a general store, marinas, and charter docks. Grocery runs and larger supply stops are easier in St. Michaels or Easton, roughly a half-hour drive north.
At Cedarville State Forest, hookups are limited and vary by loop. Each campsite has a picnic table, fire ring with a grill, and a lantern post. Sites on the inner loop are equipped with electric, and sites on the outer loop are primitive, with a bathhouse in the center of the loop and water spigots throughout. A 35-foot RV length limit applies, so confirm rig size before booking.
Bring bug protection. Marshy shoreline means mosquitoes and biting flies are common on summer evenings, and coastal humidity is high from June through August.

On RVezy, travel trailers in the Talbot County area typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches range from $225 to $400 per night. You save the most by booking midweek, traveling in the May or September shoulder season when Bay weather is still gorgeous, and choosing a delivered travel trailer so you skip motorhome fuel costs. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tilghman%20Island%2C%20MarylandDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Tilghman Island?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Tilghman Island, with no commercial license or special endorsement required for any RV on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and ID verification happens right inside the RVezy platform during booking, so there is nothing to mail in or notarize. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. Most first-time renters heading to the Eastern Shore are surprised how quick the approval is, often the same day, so you can focus on planning your skipjack cruise instead of paperwork.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Tilghman Island, MD?
Every RV rental in Maryland booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can cross the Knapp's Narrows drawbridge with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host, so you can pick the tier that matches your comfort zone. Coverage details, deductibles, and inclusions are clearly outlined before you confirm. Pro tip: select your protection level before finalizing payment so the per-night cost is locked in and there are no surprises at pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Tilghman Island RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not the individual host), and it includes a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. Refund amounts after that depend on how far out from your trip you are, and RVezy also has protections in place for serious situations, which matters on the Chesapeake Bay where the occasional tropical storm or nor'easter can roll in. Because the policy is handled at the platform level, you will not see it on individual listings. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Tilghman Island RV trip dates, then check the cancellation details on your confirmation page so you know your refund window.

Nearby, the trails at Pickering Creek Audubon Center and the sidewalks in St. Michaels also welcome leashed dogs. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed, hosts appreciate the heads-up and it usually leads to a smoother check-in.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/eastern/BlackWalnut.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or rental house on Tilghman Island?
Yes, RV delivery to Tilghman Island is one of the best ways to enjoy the Eastern Shore, especially if you are flying into BWI or Reagan National and would rather not drive a motorhome over the Bay Bridge. Many RVezy hosts will deliver to local spots like Bay Shore Campground in Cordova, your waterfront rental on Tilghman, or a driveway in St. Michaels, then set up the RV, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Just use the Delivery filter and enter your destination address. Pro tip: delivery is a smart move for first-time renters since you skip the drawbridge stress and start your trip already parked with the awning out.

For a beach extension, Assateague State Park and Frontier Town near Ocean City are popular add-ons. dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/eastern/Tuckahoe.aspxWhen is the best time to visit Tilghman Island in an RV?
The sweet spot for a Tilghman Island RV trip is mid-May through mid-June and again from mid-September through October. You will get daytime highs in the 70s, lower humidity, and the Chesapeake at its most beautiful, plus October brings the famous Tilghman Island Day with skipjack races and watermen's demonstrations. July and August are hot and humid (highs in the upper 80s with thick Bay humidity), but RV air conditioning handles it easily and crab season is in full swing. Winters are mild but quiet, with average highs in the mid-40s and many restaurants on seasonal hours. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season weekend and you will find better RV rates and easier campground reservations along the Eastern Shore.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Tilghman Island?
You will do great, Tilghman Island is one of the easiest places in Maryland for first time renting an RV. The roads are flat, traffic is light, and Route 33 from St. Michaels out to the island is a well-marked two-lane road. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup: how to operate the slides, level the rig, hook up power and water, dump tanks, and use the propane. You will have the host's number for the whole trip plus 24/7 roadside assistance from RVezy. Pro tip: choose a smaller Class C motorhome or a 20-25 ft travel trailer for your first trip, they are plenty roomy for a couple or small family and easy to maneuver over the Knapp's Narrows drawbridge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing, so even if you get stuck on Route 33 heading toward Tilghman, help is one phone call away. Your host is typically your first point of contact for quick questions about how a system works, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: record a quick video of the orientation walkthrough at pickup, when you cannot remember which switch runs the water pump at 9 p.m. in Tuckahoe State Park, you will have it right on your phone.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Tilghman Island?
An RV road trip from Tilghman Island opens up some of the East Coast's most scenic drives. Head south about 50 miles to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge near Cambridge for bald eagles and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center. Continue east about 115 miles to Assateague Island National Seashore to camp among the famous wild ponies. Drive north 60 miles over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to historic Annapolis, then on to Gettysburg (about 150 miles total). Or loop south to Chincoteague, Virginia, roughly 130 miles, for another wild pony experience. Cross-border note: trips into Canada may be allowed with host approval and added paperwork, while Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: confirm the height of your specific RV before crossing the Bay Bridge so clearance is never a question.
nps.gov/hatu/index.htmWhat's the fuel budget for an RV trip around Tilghman Island?
Fuel is one of the easier parts of budgeting for an RV rental in Tilghman Island because distances are short. Travel trailers do not burn extra fuel themselves (just your tow vehicle, usually 10-14 mpg), Class C motorhomes average 8-10 mpg, and Class A coaches run 6-8 mpg. Maryland gas prices typically track near the national average, and you will find stations in Easton and St. Michaels with limited options on the island itself. A typical 4-day Eastern Shore loop covering 250 miles costs roughly $80-$130 in fuel for a Class C, depending on current pump prices. Pro tip: fill up in Easton where prices tend to be lower than on the island, and start each day with a full tank to avoid backtracking.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Tilghman Island?
For the best campgrounds near Tilghman Island, book as early as you can. Maryland State Parks like Tuckahoe and Martinak take reservations through the Maryland State Park Reservation System up to one year in advance, and summer weekends often fill within days. Private parks like Bay Shore Campground in Cordova typically take reservations 6-12 months out, with holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) being the most competitive. For a quieter shoulder-season trip in May or October, 4-8 weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: if your dream weekend is booked, set a calendar alert for 14 days out, that is when many people cancel and prime waterfront sites can reopen.
parkreservations.maryland.gov/What are the driving conditions like getting to Tilghman Island?
Driving to Tilghman Island is relaxing, the route is flat, scenic, and free of mountain grades. From the Western Shore, you cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on US-50 East, then follow US-50 to Easton and take Route 33 west through St. Michaels out to Tilghman. The final stretch is a quiet two-lane road that ends at the Knapp's Narrows drawbridge, which lifts on demand for sailboats. Traffic can back up on US-50 on summer Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, so plan crossings outside peak hours. Pro tip: always confirm your RV's exact height before crossing the Bay Bridge, and use the right-hand lanes which are most comfortable for taller rigs.
roads.maryland.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Tilghman Island?
Campgrounds near Tilghman Island offer a nice mix of options. Maryland State Parks like Tuckahoe and Martinak provide electric hookups (typically 30-amp), potable water spigots, hot showers, flush toilets, and a centralized dump station, though individual sites do not have sewer. Private parks like Bay Shore Campground in Cordova feature full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), pools, playgrounds, laundry, and Wi-Fi. For dumping and freshwater fill-ups en route, many parks let day-users pay a small fee. Pro tip: ask your host to top off the freshwater tank before delivery and empty the black tank for you, that way your first day on the Eastern Shore is pure crab cakes and sunsets, not setup chores.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/eastern/Martinak.aspxWhat's inside a typical Tilghman Island RV rental?
Today's motorhome rental Tilghman Island and travel trailer options are well-equipped. Expect a real queen or king bed, a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette and sofa that often convert to extra beds, air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling in a motorhome. Many RVs also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and outdoor speakers, perfect for grilling fresh Chesapeake crabs at your campsite. Some hosts add a generator, solar, or mobile Wi-Fi, which is helpful since cell coverage on Tilghman can be spotty in spots. Pro tip: filter by sleep count and the exact amenities you need (A/C, generator, pet-friendly) so the listings you compare already match your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tilghman%20Island%2C%20MarylandWhat add-ons and options can I get with my campervan rental Tilghman Island?
A campervan rental Tilghman Island booking on RVezy comes with plenty of flexibility. Common add-ons include delivery and setup (popular for waterfront rentals on the island), generator use, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits with pots and utensils, outdoor chairs and grills, bike racks, kayak racks (handy for paddling Knapp's Narrows or the Choptank), and pet cleaning fees. Pickup and dropoff windows are set by each host, and mileage policies usually offer 100-150 free miles per night with unlimited-mileage upgrades available. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a kayak rack at booking, you will often save versus adding them later, and you will be paddling past skipjacks at sunrise instead of running errands.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tilghman%20Island%2C%20MarylandHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, so there is no cash, checks, or awkward exchanges with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, the amount is clearly shown on the listing before you confirm, and it is released back to you after a successful return with no issues. Sticking to the host's mileage, generator hour, and cleanliness policies is the easiest way to avoid any deductions. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff on Tilghman, time-stamped phone video is the gold standard for protecting your deposit and keeping check-in stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Tilghman Island for a summer trip with the family?
A family RV trip in Tilghman Island during summer is one of the most memorable ways to experience the Chesapeake. Kids love watching the Knapp's Narrows drawbridge lift for sailboats, hunting for sea glass along the shore, climbing aboard a historic skipjack, and learning about blue crabs at the Tilghman Watermen's Museum. RVs sleep 4-8 comfortably, so cousins and grandparents can come along, and pet-friendly options keep the family dog in the mix. Daytime summer highs average in the mid- to upper-80s with humidity, so look for an RV with strong roof A/C and consider a campground with a pool like Bay Shore. Pro tip: book mid-June before school-vacation peak pricing kicks in, and add the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry to your itinerary for a memorable day trip.
