Campgrounds near Wheaton-Glenmont
Wheaton-Glenmont sits inside the Capital Beltway in Montgomery County, Maryland, roughly ten miles north of the National Mall. RV travelers use it as a base for Washington, DC sightseeing while sleeping outside the urban core. The closest full-service RV park is Cherry Hill Park in College Park, about a fifteen-minute drive east.
For a wooded National Park Service setting, Greenbelt Park Campground sits just 10 miles from Washington, D.C., with historic sites nearby. State-park camping lies a short drive north at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area near Ellicott City, and privately run Ramblin' Pines lies between the two along the I-70 corridor.
Farther east toward Annapolis, the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday in Millersville rounds out the options. Together these five campgrounds cover full-hookup resort camping, NPS tent-and-RV loops, state-park sites, and family-focused private parks.
Things to do near Wheaton-Glenmont
The main draw is Washington, DC itself: the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, monuments, and the U.S. Capitol. The Greenbelt Metro station on the Green Line is about 1.5 miles from Greenbelt Park Campground and drops riders near the Mall, and Cherry Hill Park runs shuttle and tour options into the city.
Outdoor time centers on the Patapsco River corridor. Patapsco Valley State Park offers access to an extensive trail network with hiking, biking, and multi-use routes, plus river access for paddling and fishing. Closer to town, Rock Creek Park and the C&O Canal towpath offer easy biking and walking.
Families staying at Cherry Hill Park find on-site pools, a splash pad, mini-golf, and playgrounds without leaving the property. Day trips to Annapolis, Baltimore's Inner Harbor, and Goddard Space Flight Center are all within an hour.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the region. April and May bring cherry blossoms, comfortable temperatures, and full trail access, while September and October deliver cool nights and fall color along the Patapsco. Both shoulder seasons see heavy weekend booking pressure tied to DC tourism and school breaks.
Summer is the peak family season and also the most humid. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and campgrounds near the beltway fill weeks ahead of holiday weekends, so book early for Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day. Ticks are active in the wooded parks across the Mid-Atlantic through spring and summer, so travelers should carry repellent and check for ticks after time on trails.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Cherry Hill Park and Greenbelt Park Campground operate year-round, while some state-park loops close or reduce services. The Hollofield Area campground is currently closed for renovations, so travelers should confirm current status with Maryland State Parks before planning.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.
Ronald V. - Oct 2026
We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

How to book campgrounds near Wheaton-Glenmont
Reservation systems vary by operator. Greenbelt Park Campground takes reservations year-round through Recreation.gov or 1-877-444-6777, bookable up to 6 months in advance, and payment is not accepted on site. Maryland state parks including Patapsco Valley use the state's own reservation system: bookings must be made at least 1 day ahead of arrival and can be placed up to 365 days in advance, though Hollofield Area itself is closed for renovations.
Cherry Hill Park and Ramblin' Pines are booked directly through each park's website or phone line. Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday takes reservations through KOA.com or by calling the campground.
For spring and summer weekends, secure sites as soon as the booking window opens.
What to expect
Sites near the beltway carry some road noise, and reviewers at Cherry Hill Park note this openly. Pull-through spacing at several regional parks is tight enough that leveling matters, so carrying blocks is wise.
Amenity levels differ sharply. Cherry Hill Park offers 30 and 50 amp service, sewer, wifi, cable, a store, playground, hot tub, and mini golf, while Greenbelt Park Campground is a simpler NPS facility with no hookups, a dump station, showers, and no alcohol permitted in the campground. Patapsco Valley's Hollofield loop, when open, offers some 30-amp electric sites and a dump station but no full hookups.
Cell service is generally good across the region. Transit access is a real advantage: many RVers park the rig and take Metro, MARC, or a campground shuttle into DC rather than driving downtown.

Spring brings cherry blossoms, comfortable highs in the 60s and 70s, and lower humidity, while fall delivers brilliant foliage in the surrounding Catoctin and Blue Ridge mountains with highs in the 60s and 70s. July and August get hot (averages in the upper 80s) and humid, so plan for shaded campsites and AC-equipped rigs. weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. How does this work in Wheaton-Glenmont?
First time renting an RV? Wheaton-Glenmont is one of the easiest places to start. After you book through RVezy, your host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slides, hookups, tanks, leveling, and propane so nothing is a mystery before you pull away. Many local hosts also offer delivery and setup at your campsite, which removes city-driving nerves entirely. You can message any host with questions before booking, and RVezy's customer support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: book a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first rental, they drive much more like a large van than a bus.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trip destinations from Wheaton-Glenmont?
Wheaton-Glenmont is a phenomenal launch pad for an RV road trip. Head east about 145 miles to Assateague Island National Seashore for wild ponies and Atlantic beach camping. Drive 90 miles west to Shenandoah National Park's Skyline Drive for famous Blue Ridge overlooks. Roll 80 miles north to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for the historic battlefield. Visit Harpers Ferry, WV (about 65 miles northwest) at the meeting of three states and two rivers. Cross-border trips to Canada are allowed with most hosts (confirm via message), but RVezy rentals cannot travel to Mexico due to insurance coverage limits. Pro tip: a 7-day loop through Shenandoah, Harpers Ferry, and Gettysburg is the classic DC-area RV escape.
nps.gov/shen/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Wheaton-Glenmont RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, so it is smart to plan. Class C motorhomes near Wheaton-Glenmont average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG, and a tow setup with a pickup truck and travel trailer lands around 10 to 14 MPG. Maryland gas prices typically sit close to the national average. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C at 10 MPG, budget around $110 to $140 in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: fill up at Costco in Beltsville or a Sheetz on Georgia Avenue before leaving town, both consistently beat Beltway-adjacent stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Wheaton-Glenmont?
For the best campgrounds near Wheaton-Glenmont, six months ahead is the gold standard, especially for weekends from May through October. Greenbelt Park (a National Park Service campground 12 miles east) opens reservations on a six-month rolling window through Recreation.gov, and summer weekends fill within days of release. Cherry Hill Park in College Park books through their own system and fills fast during University of Maryland graduation weeks and Cherry Blossom Festival season. Maryland State Parks like Little Bennett and Patapsco Valley use the Maryland Park Service reservation portal. Pro tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) often have open sites even on short notice, perfect for spontaneous trips.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232474What's it like driving an RV around Wheaton-Glenmont and the DC area?
Honest take: the Capital Beltway (I-495) and I-270 around Wheaton-Glenmont get busy, so smart drivers plan around rush hour (avoid 6:30 to 9:30 AM and 3:30 to 7:00 PM weekdays). Once traffic settles, RV driving on the Beltway is straightforward. The Baltimore-Washington Parkway restricts commercial vehicles, so most RVs should use I-95 or I-295 instead. Watch for low clearances under DC's older bridges. Pro tip: if city driving feels intimidating, book a host who offers RV delivery in Wheaton-Glenmont, they will bring it directly to your campground or driveway so you only drive on open highways.
mdot.maryland.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Wheaton-Glenmont?
You have the full range nearby. Cherry Hill Park in College Park offers full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, cable, WiFi), pools, a hot tub, splash area, mini-golf, a cafe, on-site dump station, and a shuttle to the College Park Metro station. Greenbelt Park is primitive (no hookups) but has flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, and a dump station. Little Bennett Regional Park offers electric hookups, hot showers, and a camp store. For where to park an RV in Wheaton-Glenmont overnight outside a campground, note that Montgomery County restricts long-term RV parking on public roads, so plan a proper campsite.
cherryhillpark.com/What's typically included inside the RV itself?
Most motorhome rental listings in Wheaton-Glenmont come fully equipped so you can move in and go. Expect a queen or king bed, kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink with running water, indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (AC and furnace), and dining/seating areas with seatbelts for travel. Class C and Class A rigs typically include a generator for off-grid power, while campervan rental options in Wheaton-Glenmont (Class B) are nimble for city navigation. Many hosts also include linens, kitchenware, outdoor chairs, and a TV; some offer WiFi hotspots as an add-on. Pro tip: each RVezy listing has a full amenities checklist, so you will know exactly what is included before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wheaton-Glenmont,%20MarylandWhat add-ons and options are available when I rent an RV in Wheaton-Glenmont?
Hosts in the Wheaton-Glenmont area offer great extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons include linen and bedding packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor setups ($20 to $50), portable WiFi hotspots ($10 to $20 per day), generator usage beyond included hours, bike racks, and kitchen kits. Pickup is usually at the host's location with a 60- to 90-minute walkthrough; many offer RV delivery in Wheaton-Glenmont for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies are set per listing (typically 100 to 150 free miles per day), and you can filter for Instant Book to skip the approval wait. Pro tip: ask about a generator hours upgrade if you plan to dry camp at Greenbelt Park.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wheaton-Glenmont,%20MarylandHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your rent an RV in Wheaton-Glenmont booking happens securely through the RVezy platform, never directly to the host. You will typically pay at booking by credit card, with any balance due before pickup. A refundable security deposit (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is placed on hold separately from your booking payment and released back to you after the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. To avoid any issues: take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, return with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks per the host's instructions. Pro tip: a quick walkthrough video at pickup protects everyone and keeps your deposit return smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there cheap RV rental options in Wheaton-Glenmont for budget travelers?
Yes, plenty. For a cheap RV rental in Wheaton-Glenmont, focus on smaller travel trailers (often $75 to $120 per night) or pop-up campers, which are the most budget-friendly category on RVezy. Filter by price, sort by lowest, and consider midweek pickups (Sunday through Wednesday), which often unlock host discounts. Booking a weeklong trip frequently triggers an automatic weekly rate. Pair an affordable trailer with Greenbelt Park's affordable campsites just 12 miles away and you have built one of the most budget-friendly family RV trip Wheaton-Glenmont setups possible in the DC metro. Bonus tip: shoulder season (March, April, October, November) is when prices really dip.
