Camping near Wildewood, Maryland
Wildewood is a census-designated place in St. Mary's County, in the lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay region of southern Maryland. It sits within easy driving distance of the peninsula tip at Point Lookout and a network of Bay, river, and creek-side campgrounds serving both RV travelers and tent campers. The area draws boaters, anglers, birdwatchers, and families visiting the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum and nearby Civil War sites.
RV renters using Wildewood as a base can reach a mix of state-park camping and privately owned resorts within roughly an hour. Take It Easy Campground and Aqua Land Campground serve the immediate southern Maryland corridor, while Coles Point Marina and RV Resort sits across the Potomac in Virginia's Northern Neck. Taylors Island Family Campgrounds lies across the Chesapeake on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
Point Lookout is located at the southern tip of St. Mary's County where the Potomac River meets the Chesapeake Bay, and anchors the region's public-lands camping.
Things to do in Wildewood
Water access defines most trips. Point Lookout offers swimming beaches, a historic lighthouse and Civil War-era history, and features various fishing areas, including the 710-foot fishing pier, which is in operation mid-April until mid-December. Paddlers can follow three water trails within the park, and boaters use the park launch, which is valid 24 hours a day, year round.
History and wildlife round out the itinerary. A Civil War Museum tells the story of Point Lookout during its time as a prisoner of war camp for captured Confederate soldiers, and shares the same building with the Marshland Nature Center. Point Lookout is one of the premier birding locations in Maryland and the top eBird hotspot in St. Mary's County. Coles Point and Taylors Island add crabbing, boat ramps, and marina access.

Summer is the busiest window on the lower Chesapeake, with warm Bay swimming, active fishing, and heavy weekend demand. Point Lookout can fill to capacity on summer weekends and holidays, so RV renters should lock in dates well in advance. Afternoon thunderstorms and high humidity are typical from June through August.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV trips in southern Maryland. Days are mild, bugs are lighter, and shoreline birding peaks during migration. Osprey return in early spring, and cooler nights make campground sites more comfortable through October. The Point Lookout campground season currently runs through late November on the state reservation system.
Winter is quiet. Many private campgrounds shut down or reduce services, and shoulder-season cottage rentals are limited. A full hook-up loop (Tulip) remains open year round for self-contained campers, with no restrooms available, and office hours are reduced November through March with some facilities closed.
How to book campgrounds near Wildewood
Maryland state park campsites, including Point Lookout, are reserved through the state's central system. For reservations, call 1-888-432-2267 or register online at parkreservations.maryland.gov, and reservations can be made up to 365 days in advance. Check-in is at 3pm, and if arrival is after 4pm, the check-in packet is at the far-right gate.
Day-use access has its own rule. Advance reservations are required for day-use entry on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and may be made starting seven days in advance through the state park reservations website.
Private campgrounds such as Take It Easy Campground, Aqua Land Campground, Coles Point Marina and RV Resort, and Taylors Island Family Campgrounds book directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holiday periods sell out earliest, so RV renters should reserve as soon as travel dates are firm.
What to expect camping near Wildewood
Expect a mix of shoreline state-park camping and small, family-run private resorts. Sites at Point Lookout are set on a low peninsula between the Potomac and the Bay, with easy beach and pier access. Picnic tables and fire rings grace each campsite, and water is available at regular hookups. Loops include electric sites suitable for typical Class C and travel-trailer rentals, plus cabins.
Private parks like Coles Point Marina, Taylors Island, Aqua Land, and Take It Easy skew toward full-hookup RV sites with boat ramps, bathhouses, and family amenities. A full hook-up loop at Point Lookout remains open year round for self-contained campers, with no restrooms available in that loop. Cell coverage is generally good near Wildewood and can be spotty at waterfront loops. The park fishing pier operates mid-April through mid-December, so late-season visitors should confirm amenity hours before arrival.
