Camping near Milton, Massachusetts
Milton sits just south of Boston, at the base of the Blue Hills Reservation and within a short drive of Boston Harbor. The area gives RV renters two very different camping options: forested state-park sites on the mainland, and rustic island tent sites reached by ferry. Wompatuck State Park is located just 35 minutes from downtown Boston, and its 260-site campground, half with electricity, includes a network of trails for biking, hiking and some of the best mountain bicycling in the state.
Offshore, the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park is the region's signature camping destination. The park spans dozens of islands and peninsulas in Boston Harbor, several of which have historically offered rustic camping. In practice, however, overnight camping is currently concentrated on a single island. Camping is available only on Peddocks Island, and is not available on Bumpkin, Grape, or Lovells Islands.
Because the islands are boat-access only, RV travelers typically base the rig at Wompatuck State Park or a private mainland campground, then day-trip or tent-camp on Peddocks Island via ferry from Hingham.
Things to do near Milton
Wompatuck State Park is the anchor for outdoor activity on the mainland. The park offers 12 miles of paved bicycle trails, and many miles of wooded bridle paths and hiking trails, and is also a geocaching park where visitors can find up to 30 geocaches within park boundaries. One of the most notable features of the park is Mt. Blue Spring, a popular source of fresh drinking water that visitors can help themselves to for free.
On the water, ferry service from Hingham opens up the harbor islands. Visitors can walk a Civil War-era fort on Peddocks, visit historic lighthouses, explore tidal pools, hike coastal trails, and fish, picnic, or swim, all within reach of downtown Boston. Boston Harbor Islands - Thompson Island, now known as Cathleen Stone Island, offers salt marshes, herons, egrets, flowering meadows, and fruit trees for day visitors.
Back on shore, the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton adds thousands of acres of hiking, and Nantasket Beach in Hull is a short drive for ocean swimming.

The camping window in this part of Massachusetts is short and clearly defined. The Wompatuck campground is only open from early May to mid-October. The Boston Harbor Islands camping season on Peddocks Island runs from mid-June through mid-October, with limited weekly operating days, generally Wednesday through Sunday in summer and Thursday through Sunday in early fall.
Summer is peak season. Warm harbor breezes, long daylight, and full ferry schedules make July and August the busiest months, and sites at both Wompatuck and Peddocks fill quickly on weekends. Early fall is often the best trade-off: crisp air, thinner crowds, and reliable weekend ferries into early October.
Winter and early spring effectively close the overnight camping picture. Both the state park campground and the island sites are shuttered, and harbor ferries do not run on a camping schedule. Day-use trails at Wompatuck and the Blue Hills remain open year-round for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing when conditions allow.

How to book a campsite
Both nearby park systems use the Massachusetts DCR reservation platform, operated through ReserveAmerica. Reservations for Wompatuck State Park Campground can be made through the Massachusetts State Parks reservation system. Reservations can be made up to 4 months prior to the arrival date. Campsites can be reserved for up to 14 consecutive days.
For the Boston Harbor Islands, reservations are required for Peddocks Island camping and can also be made through the state reservation portal. Campers are strongly encouraged to book ferry passage from Hingham immediately after securing a campsite, since ferry capacity is limited and there are no walk-up campsite reservations on the islands.
At Wompatuck, walk-in registrations are not permitted, but advance reservations can be made same day up until 2 pm on the date of arrival.
What to expect on-site
Wompatuck offers electric hookups on about half its sites, no water hookups, and a dump station. Water spigots are readily available throughout the campground, and there are centrally located bathrooms and a dump station. Sites are wooded, and RV renters should expect tight, tree-lined loops rather than pull-through resort pads. Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground, and firewood sales at the park are by credit card only.
The harbor islands are a different experience entirely, and not suited to an RV overnight. Peddocks Island is accessible only by private boat or ferry, and amenities are limited: composting toilets, no showers, and no supplies, with fresh water available on Peddocks. Primitive tent sites and yurts (wooden frames covered with canvas) are offered; tent sites have no electricity or water, while the yurts do have electricity. Pets are not permitted at the island campsites.
