Campgrounds and RV parks near Laurium, MI

The Keweenaw National Historical Park is the anchor attraction, with the Calumet Visitor Center a short drive from Laurium interpreting the region's copper mining history. The Quincy Mine near Hancock offers underground tours, and the surrounding communities preserve mine buildings, historic downtowns, and museums. Outdoor options are extensive. The Keweenaw is known for numerous waterfalls, and Brockway Mountain Drive above Copper Harbor is a popular scenic route. From Copper Harbor, a ferry runs to Isle Royale National Park during the warm season. Hiking, mountain biking, agate hunting on Lake Superior beaches, and paddling round out the summer activities. In winter, the peninsula becomes a snowmobiling and cross-country skiing destination, with groomed trails running through the surrounding forests.

The camping season in the Keweenaw is short. Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground is open from the week before Memorial Day through early October and closes during the winter months due to extreme conditions. Baraga State Park runs a similar spring-to-late-October window under Michigan DNR operation. Peak demand runs mid-June through late August, with a second surge for fall color in late September and early October. Late September through October brings vibrant fall colors across the peninsula. Bug pressure, especially blackflies and mosquitoes, is heaviest from late May into early July. Lake Superior water stays cold well into summer, so swimming is a short season for most visitors. Winter is long and snowy. Campers report full-on winter conditions arriving as early as mid-October, and heavy lake-effect snow through the cold months makes the area a snowmobile destination rather than an RV one. Baraga State Park connects directly to regional ORV and snowmobile trails, but most campground infrastructure closes by late October.

Expect a rustic-leaning experience compared with Lower Peninsula RV parks. Sunset Bay sits directly on Lake Superior with over 2,500 feet of shoreline, 12 tent sites, 28 RV sites, and three housekeeping cabins, plus laundry and a dump station. Water is available at all sites, RV sites have electric, and four sites offer full hookups with sewer. Baraga State Park is a modern campground with a mix of back-in and pull-through sites under oaks, maples, and pines, and it connects directly to regional ORV trails. Sites lie close to US-41, so highway noise is a common complaint. Sand Point - Ojibwa Recreation Area offers around 80 electric sites, a dump station, and marina access on Keweenaw Bay, while Ojibwa Casino RV Park has 12 paved full-hookup sites next to the casino. Cell coverage is spotty on the peninsula, grocery runs mean a trip to Calumet or Houghton, and evenings stay cool even in July.
