Summer weekends and holidays book heavily at state and municipal parks.
Shoulder-season access varies by campground. Lake Carlos State Park is open year-round, with the upper campground available for winter camping; modern showers and flush toilets operate seasonally, while vault toilets are available during the off-season. The dump station also runs seasonally, generally May through October.
Private resorts run on tighter seasons. Lazy Days Campground's heated pool operates from Memorial Weekend through Labor Day, and the campground itself runs a summer season. Head Of The Lakes Resort shifts to cabin stays, ice fishing, and snowmobile trail access in winter. Fire restrictions can apply during dry spells, so check current county conditions before arrival.
How to book campsites near Bertha
State park sites use the Minnesota DNR system. Reservations can be made the same day as arrival and up to 120 days before the arrival date, and online reservations can be made 24 hours a day, except for the first day a reservation becomes available. Campers can reserve sites online at mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone at 866-857-2757. Overnight guests need a state park vehicle permit in addition to a camping or lodging reservation.
Dower Lake Recreation Area uses a private online reservation platform, and staff can also be reached by phone for questions and seasonal sites. Private resorts typically book direct: Camp S'more, Lazy Days, and Head Of The Lakes Resort take reservations by phone or through their own websites. Book summer holiday weekends several months out, especially for full-hookup or lakefront sites.
What to expect on-site
Hookup coverage varies widely. Lake Carlos State Park has an upper and lower campground with a total of 121 sites, 81 with electric hookups; the lower campground is near the lake while the upper campground is in a more secluded and wooded area. Sites are fairly large and shady and can accommodate rigs up to 50 feet in length, and the park has a dump station and drinking water.
Private parks lean toward full hookups. Lazy Days Campground features 99 full hookup RV sites, including 10 pull-throughs equipped with 50-amp service. Camp S'more Campground offers full-hookup sites with pull-through options suitable for larger rigs.
Dower Lake Recreation Area offers a mix of electric and rustic sites plus seasonal sites, with a dump station for registered campers. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the region, and firewood is commonly available for sale on site.

For a 300-mile weekend loop from Bertha to Itasca State Park and back, budget roughly $90 to $150 in fuel depending on current Minnesota pump prices and your rig. Winter brings snow, ice, and wind chills well below zero, which is why most rentals operate May through October. exploreminnesota.com/things-to-do/outdoor-adventureHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Bertha?
Payment is straightforward and entirely handled through RVezy, so you never hand cash or a check to your Bertha host. You pay the total trip cost (rental, protection plan, fees, and any add-ons) with a credit or debit card at booking, and RVezy holds the funds until your trip begins. A refundable security deposit is placed as a pre-authorization hold on your card before pickup, separate from the booking payment, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV. As long as the rig comes back clean, fueled, and undamaged, the hold is released after your trip ends. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video with your host at pickup and dropoff to keep everything smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I prep a Bertha RV rental for cold or shoulder-season weather?
Shoulder-season trips around Bertha can be magical, think September aspen gold along Highway 64 and crisp 40°F to 50°F nights perfect for campfires. Many local hosts list winter-capable rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces, so you stay cozy when overnight lows dip into the 30s and 40s. For October and early-season May trips, request a campsite with electric (shore power) so you can run the heater without draining the battery, and ask your host how to add RV antifreeze if a hard freeze is forecast. Pro tip: filter for Class C motorhomes when booking, since they warm up fastest and handle Minnesota wind well on Highway 71.
