Campgrounds near Brownton, Minnesota
Brownton sits in McLeod County in south-central Minnesota, roughly halfway between the Twin Cities and New Ulm. The area is farmland and lake country, and most RV camping options fall into two categories: private lake resorts to the north and east, and Minnesota state park campgrounds to the south along the Minnesota River valley.
Within about an hour's drive, renters can reach Cokato Lake RV Resort on the east shore of Cokato Lake, Spirit of Ripley RV Campground, and Codgers Cover RV Resort. For state park camping, the Semi-Modern loop at Flandrau State Park near New Ulm and the Horse Camp at Fort Ridgely State Park near Fairfax are the closest options, and both accept RVs.
The mix works well for families: private resorts lean toward pools, playgrounds, and full hookups, while the state parks offer hiking, history, and river access with more rustic infrastructure.
Things to do around Brownton
Water is the main draw north of Brownton. Cokato Lake supports swimming, fishing for panfish, and pontoon or personal watercraft use, and Cokato Lake RV Resort adds on-site amenities like a pool, mini golf, and courts for lawn games.
South of town, Flandrau State Park offers eight miles of hiking trails, a chlorinated sand-bottom swimming pond and beach, sand volleyball courts, and playground equipment, plus walking access to downtown New Ulm and its historic Schell's Brewery. Fort Ridgely State Park adds a historic fort site and museum covering the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, eight miles of hiking trails, 12 miles of horse trails, and a seven-mile bike trail to Fairfax.

Private RV resorts in this part of Minnesota generally run a May through October season that matches the frost-free window when pools, water hookups, and lake activities are usable.
State park campgrounds run on different calendars. Flandrau's Semi-Modern campground is open year-round for camping, but flush toilets and hot showers operate seasonally from May through mid-October, and the dump station and swim pond follow the same warm-season window. Fort Ridgely offers year-round camping, though the park does not plow the campground road, so winter access is walk-in only once snow arrives. The Horse Camp at Fort Ridgely runs from April 1 to November 1.
Summer weekends and events like New Ulm's Oktoberfest fill state park sites early. Mosquitoes are heavy near the Cottonwood River marshland at Flandrau, so plan for repellent from late spring through August.
How to book campgrounds near Brownton
Minnesota state park sites at Flandrau and Fort Ridgely, including the Semi-Modern loop and the Horse Camp, are reserved through the Minnesota DNR reservation system at mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone at 866-857-2757. Reservations open up to 120 days in advance, and a Minnesota state park vehicle permit is required in addition to the camping fee.
Cokato Lake RV Resort, Spirit of Ripley RV Campground, and Codgers Cover RV Resort are private grounds; bookings go through each operator's office or website rather than a state portal.
For summer weekends, plan to book state park sites as soon as the 120-day window opens at 8 a.m. Central. Cancellation-alert services can help if a preferred weekend is already full.
What to expect on site
Expect a split between resort-style and rustic setups. The private resorts around Cokato and the smaller lakes typically offer paved or gravel interior roads, 30 and 50 amp hookups, laundry, and family amenities, but transient sites can be limited because many pads are seasonal or owner-occupied.
Flandrau's Semi-Modern campground has 34 electric sites with 30 and 50 amp service that fit rigs up to about 66 feet, plus flush toilets and showers in season and a seasonal dump station; drive-in sites sit close together with limited privacy. Fort Ridgely's Horse Camp has electric hookups at most sites, showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and box stalls for horses.
Cell coverage is generally solid across McLeod, Renville, and Nicollet counties, but Wi-Fi at campgrounds is inconsistent.
