Campgrounds and RV parks near Cambridge, MN

The Rum River is the local draw for paddling and shore fishing, with public access points scattered between Cambridge and Anoka. Nearby lakes hold walleye, bass, and panfish, and several campgrounds sit directly on the water for easy launching. Pokegama Lake RV Park And Golf combines lake access with a golf course, useful for mixed-interest families. Day trips fan out in every direction. Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge offers a wildlife drive and birding trails roughly 30 miles west. Wild River State Park follows 18 miles of the St. Croix River with hiking and canoe routes. Interstate State Park at Taylors Falls adds sandstone cliffs and boat tours through the Dalles, and Mille Lacs Kathio to the north layers in trails and archaeological history.

Most private campgrounds around Cambridge operate seasonally from roughly May through October, matching Minnesota's frost-free window. Late May through Labor Day is peak, with weekends filling first at lake-based parks like Fish Lake Resort And Campground and Ham Lake Resort. Book early for the Fourth of July and Memorial Day weekends, when riverside and lakeside sites go fast. June brings the wettest weather and active thunderstorms, but also the longest daylight and full green canopy. July and August run warm and humid with high mosquito activity in wooded sites. September delivers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and reliable fall color through mid-October, which is a strong window for RV renters who want quieter parks. Winter shuts down most private campgrounds. A handful of Minnesota state parks and recreation areas stay open year-round for camping, but water systems are typically off, so RV renters plan for freeze-safe operation and dump-station timing.

Private RV parks in the area typically offer full or partial hookups, gravel pads, laundry, and shower buildings, with wooded and open sites both common. Lake-based parks add docks, small beaches, and boat launches. Sites near the Rum River can be flat and grassy with mature shade, useful in July heat. Minnesota state park campgrounds lean more rustic. Electric hookups are available at many sites, but sewer is rare, so plan on the dump station on exit. Cell service is inconsistent inside state forests and along the St. Croix, and firewood must be purchased locally or from the park to prevent moving forest pests. Expect mosquitoes and ticks from late May into September, especially at wooded riverside sites. Bring screens, repellent, and long layers for evenings.
