Campgrounds and RV parks near Chisago City, MN

Water activities dominate warm-weather trips. The St. Croix River is popular for canoeing and kayaking, and rentals are available seasonally at William O'Brien State Park. Swimming is limited to Lake Alice inside the park. Anglers target walleye, bass, trout, and northern pike from the shoreline of the St. Croix channels. On land, William O'Brien has about 12 miles of hiking trails through oak savanna, wetlands, and wooded moraine. In winter, park trails are groomed for cross-country skiing and open to snowshoers. Wild Vines Campground sits next to Wild Mountain Winery and near Wild Mountain Ski and Water Park, adding wine tastings, wood-fired pizza, and seasonal thrill rides to a family itinerary. The town of Taylors Falls and Interstate State Park are close by for scenic river overlooks.

The main RV season runs late spring through mid-fall. At William O'Brien State Park, the Riverway Campground typically operates from mid-April through mid-October, while the Savanna Campground stays open year-round with electric sites useful for cooler-weather RV trips. The park's dump station is available mid-April through mid-October. Private campgrounds in the Chisago Lakes area, including Wild Vines Campground, generally open in May and close in October. Summer is the busiest stretch, driven by warm days, river paddling, and Lake Alice swimming. Booking well ahead is important for weekends and holidays, and electric sites fill first. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures, thinner crowds, and better site availability, though nights can be cold at the shoulders of the season. Fall color along the St. Croix typically peaks in late September and early October. Winter narrows options sharply. Savanna Campground remains reservable and three of the park's four camper cabins operate year-round, but seasonal water systems and modern shower buildings shut down for the cold months.

Expect a mix of public and private campgrounds. William O'Brien State Park has modern restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers in season, potable water, a dump station, and 125 sites (71 with electric hookups); sites accept rigs up to 60 feet. Cell service can be spotty inside the park, so download maps before arrival. Private campgrounds vary in amenities. Wildwood RV Park and Campground and Kozy Oaks Kamp cater to RV travelers with hookups and family amenities. Wild Vines Campground focuses on tent, pop-up, and small RV sites with fire rings, picnic tables, potable water, and shared bathrooms; outside alcohol is not permitted since it operates alongside a winery. Mosquitoes and ticks are common near the river and wetlands from late spring through summer. Only approved firewood is allowed in state parks to limit the spread of invasive pests, and pets must be leashed.
