Campgrounds and RV parks near Claremont, MN

Rice Lake State Park has about five miles of mostly flat hiking trails, seasonal canoe rentals, and canoe-in campsites on the south side of the lake for travelers who want more seclusion. The shallow lake is a strong birdwatching site during spring and fall migration. Nerstrand Big Woods State Park offers 11 miles of hiking trails, a boardwalk through spring ephemerals such as the rare dwarf trout lily, and the short hike to Hidden Falls on Prairie Creek. In winter, the park grooms cross-country ski trails and permits snowshoeing off the groomed routes. Off-park attractions within a short drive include the Village of Yesteryear and Cabela's in Owatonna, the Medford Outlet Center, and Northfield's downtown shops and eateries. Families staying at Riverview Campground often mix camping with a day trip to the Mall of America, roughly an hour north.

Minnesota state park campgrounds in this region typically operate from early April through late October. Rice Lake's main campground follows that window, while Nerstrand Big Woods keeps a small number of sites open through the winter for hardier campers. Outside the main season the day-use trails, cross-country ski trails, and snowmobile routes stay open. Private parks follow a similar rhythm. Crystal Springs RV Resort in Ellendale runs from May 1 through October 31, weather permitting, and does not allow tent camping. Riverview Campground and Brookside Campgrounds operate through the main camping season and host weekend family events during the summer months. Demand peaks between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with weekends filling first. Spring visits at Nerstrand time to the mid-April to mid-May wildflower bloom, while fall color and waterfowl migration drive a second wave of bookings in late September and October. June is historically the wettest month locally, so RVers should plan for muddy sites and afternoon thunderstorms.

Sites in this part of southern Minnesota tend to be shaded by mature hardwoods, with grass or gravel pads. State parks lean rustic: expect flush toilets and hot showers in the main loops, vault toilets at walk-in and group sites, and a dump station on the way out. Firewood is sold on site, and only approved firewood may be burned. Private parks offer more amenities. Riverview Campground has a heated pool, mini golf, playgrounds, and full hookups with 20, 30, and 50 amp service. Crystal Springs is a 50-plus community with full-hookup pull-throughs and back-ins, no tents, and a rule limiting RVs to roughly ten years old unless pre-approved by management. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the I-35 corridor. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, especially near Rice Lake's marshes, so bug spray and long sleeves are worth packing.
