Campgrounds and RV parks near Dodge Center, MN

Rice Lake State Park anchors outdoor activity in the area. The shallow, marsh-ringed lake draws waterfowl by the thousands during spring and fall migrations, and the park offers roughly five miles of hiking trails, canoe and kayak rentals, and paddle-in campsites on the far shore. Swimming is generally discouraged because of the marshy, shallow shoreline, so paddling, fishing, and birdwatching are the main draws. On the Zumbro River near Zumbrota, Shades of Sherwood Campground runs river tubing, a swimming pond, a pool, a jumping pillow, and themed weekend events geared to families. Off-site, the historic town of Mantorville offers a walkable main street with antique shops and restaurants, while Owatonna and Rochester provide larger errands, museums, and medical facilities. In winter, Rice Lake grooms trails for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

The camping window in southeastern Minnesota is short and clearly defined. Rice Lake State Park's drive-in campground typically operates from early April through late October, with the shower buildings running from May through mid-October. Private parks in the area follow a similar pattern; Shades of Sherwood, for example, is generally open from mid-April through early October, and other nearby parks open in April or May and close in October once nightly lows drop below freezing. June, July, and August are the peak booking months. Weekends fill early at Rice Lake and at family-focused parks like Shades of Sherwood, so reservations well ahead of arrival are important, especially around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Late spring can bring heavy rain and localized flooding along the Zumbro River, and some low-lying sites may be closed after major storms. Fall brings crisp nights, fewer bugs, and strong waterfowl migration through Rice Lake. Winter effectively ends drive-in RV camping in the area, though the state park stays open for day use, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.

Sites at Rice Lake State Park sit under tall hardwoods and can feel close together, with tent and cart-in sites near the water and RV sites in the woods. Loop B carries 30-amp electric hookups on 19 sites; there are no individual water or sewer hookups, and centrally located water spigots serve the campground. Larger rigs are limited by the park's older, sometimes uneven pads, so smaller and mid-size RVs generally fit best. The private parks in the area lean more toward full-hookup RV camping with pools, playgrounds, and organized activities; Shades of Sherwood offers both 30-amp and 50-amp sites along with a dump station. Cell coverage is generally good across the region, and grocery stores, propane, and RV supplies are easy to reach in Owatonna, Rochester, or Dodge Center itself. Bring bug repellent from late May through August, rain gear year-round, and only approved local firewood to comply with Minnesota firewood rules.
