Campgrounds and RV parks near Dundas, MN

Hiking is the headline activity at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. The park has about 11 miles of hiking trails, and the route to Hidden Falls, a shallow waterfall on Prairie Creek, is the signature walk and works for families with school-age kids. The park is known for its spring wildflowers, large hardwood trees, and fall color, which shape what visitors do by season: wildflower walks in May, shaded hikes in summer, and leaf-peeping drives in October. The dwarf trout lily, found only in this area, blooms in spring and draws botanists and photographers. Away from the state park, Roberds Lake and the smaller resort lakes support fishing, swimming, and paddling. The historic downtowns of Northfield and Faribault are close by for a rainy-day break.

The practical RV season runs from late April through mid-October, which aligns with when water, showers, and the dump station at Nerstrand Big Woods are typically available. May brings out the dwarf trout lily and other spring ephemerals in the Big Woods, and campground demand is still moderate. Summer weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day are the busiest window, with state park sites often claimed well in advance and lakeside private resorts filling on Fridays. Fall is arguably the best value. Daytime temperatures stay comfortable into early October, hardwood color typically peaks in the first two weeks of the month, and bug pressure drops sharply after the first frost. Shoulder-season campers should still expect cool nights. Winter camping is limited. Most private resorts close after the fall season. Nerstrand Big Woods stays open year round, but only a handful of the 51 sites are available in winter, and full RV hookups and shower buildings are not part of the cold-season setup.

Nerstrand Big Woods offers 51 sites for tents, trailers, and RVs up to about 60 feet, with 27 sites carrying 30-amp electric hookups and additional walk-in and group options. Sites include a table, fire ring, and grill, and the campground has drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station available roughly early May through mid-October. Cell service is workable but not strong; download maps before arrival. Private resorts near Dundas lean toward full hookups, family amenities, and lake access, and are the better fit for larger Class A or Class C rentals that need 30- or 50-amp service. Roads into the state park and around the small lakes are paved but narrow in spots. Pets are allowed on leash at the state park and at most private campgrounds. Firewood should be bought locally to comply with Minnesota emerald ash borer rules.
