Campgrounds and RV parks near Evansville, MN

Fishing anchors most trips here. Pelican Lake near Ashby covers roughly 4,000 acres and holds walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and perch, with a public boat launch on the lake. Nearby Lake Christina is a well-known waterfowl area and draws fall duck hunters. The paved Central Lakes State Trail runs 55 miles from Fergus Falls to Osakis and passes directly through Evansville and Ashby, offering flat cycling, walking, and inline skating on a former rail corridor. Day trips reach Lake Carlos State Park north of Alexandria for hiking, swimming, and boat access, and Glendalough State Park near Battle Lake for cart-in sites, a swimming beach, and non-motorized paddling on Annie Battle Lake.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, when lakes are open water and the Minnesota fishing opener in mid-May kicks off the busy months. Weekends fill early at lakeside resorts, and popular electric sites at Lake Carlos State Park often book out at the 120-day reservation opening. Biting insects, especially mosquitoes, peak in June and early July, so screens and repellent are worth planning around. Spring shoulder season, from late April through May, brings variable weather, cool nights, and the walleye opener. Fall, roughly September through mid-October, offers cooler days, fewer bugs, color along the hardwoods, and the start of waterfowl season on lakes like Christina. Winter camping is possible at year-round state park sites, but most private resorts near Evansville close between late October and early May. Ice fishing, snowmobiling on the Central Lakes State Trail, which is groomed for snowmobiles in winter, and cross-country skiing extend the season for cold-weather travelers.

Expect classic Minnesota lake-country camping: grassy or lightly wooded sites, mixed shade, sandy swimming beaches, and boat launches on the larger lakes. Private resorts near Evansville generally offer electric sites with water hookups, dump stations, showers, laundry, and small stores for bait, ice, and basic supplies. Cell coverage is generally good along the I-94 corridor but can weaken at more remote lake sites. Mosquitoes and biting flies are a real factor from June through August, so bring repellent and consider a screen room. Minnesota state parks enforce quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. and limit each campsite to one camping group of six people, one shelter, and one vehicle. Firewood should be purchased locally or on-site to comply with state rules on moving wood.
