Campgrounds near Eyota
Eyota sits in southeastern Minnesota's Driftless Area, a short drive east of Rochester along US-14. RV travelers use it as a quiet base for exploring the limestone bluffs, spring-fed trout streams, and hardwood forests of the Whitewater River valley. State parks, family-run private campgrounds, and full-hookup RV parks are all within roughly thirty to forty-five minutes of town.
The closest developed options run from private resorts to rustic state park loops. Rochester / Marion KOA Journey and Autumn Woods RV Park handle full-hookup rigs on the Rochester side, while Lazy D Campground and Trail Rides is a family-owned RV and camping destination in Altura, in the Whitewater Valley, with a trout stream running through the property. Minneiska - Whitewater State Park lies about 26 miles east of Rochester, roughly a 35-minute drive, and Carley State Park sits between the two along the North Branch of the Whitewater River.
Expect a mix of wooded, hilly terrain and open farm country. Bluff-country roads are generally straight and manageable for larger rigs, though some state park loops cap RV length.
Things to do near Eyota
Trout fishing anchors the area. The Whitewater River and Trout Run Creek hold brown, brook, and rainbow trout, and Carley State Park adds stream access on the North Branch. Whitewater State Park includes a sandy swimming beach, a year-round visitor center, and easy-to-challenging hiking trails through limestone bluff country.
Families staying at Lazy D Campground and Trail Rides can layer on fly-fishing on the private trout stream, river tubing, guided horseback trail rides, and an on-site swimming pool. Rochester, about twenty minutes west, adds paved bike trails, the Mayo Clinic campus, and grocery resupply.
Spring brings bluebell blooms at Carley State Park; fall brings hardwood color across the bluffs, with oaks and maples turning red, orange, and yellow through October.

The main RV season runs from April through October. Many amenities close in winter: at Whitewater, Minneiska Campground and camper cabins stay open year-round, while all other Whitewater sites run from March 25 through December 1. The Whitewater swimming beach is open through the warmer summer months.
Summer is the busiest stretch. It is normally the wettest of the seasons in Rochester due to frequent thunderstorms, with each summer month averaging four inches or more of precipitation and around twenty thunderstorm days a year. Weekend sites at state parks fill weeks in advance from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Shoulder seasons are quieter and better for wildlife. Carley in particular shines in spring, when Virginia bluebells carpet the valley floor in early May. Carley Campground operates seasonally from Memorial Day through mid-October, so very early spring and late fall trips there are not possible. Winter camping is limited to Whitewater's Minneiska loop and hardier private parks.
How to book near Eyota
Minnesota state park sites are booked through the state's central reservation system. Campsite reservations open 120 days in advance, and same-day bookings are possible. Bookings can be made online through the Minnesota DNR reservation site at reservemn.usedirect.com or by phone at 866-857-2757.
A vehicle permit is required in addition to the site fee. Permits can be purchased in advance via the Minnesota DNR website, and daily or annual options are available. Summer and holiday weekends at Whitewater sell out quickly, so travelers should book at the 120-day mark or watch for cancellations.
Private parks like Rochester / Marion KOA Journey, Lazy D Campground and Trail Rides, and Autumn Woods RV Park take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect near Eyota
Hookup levels vary widely. At Whitewater, the Cedar Hill loop has drive-to sites with electric hookups, Gooseberry Glen offers cart-in and walk-to sites, and the Minneiska loop has 41 drive-to sites with electric hookups. Campsites accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs up to 50 feet, and amenities include flush and vault toilets, hot-water showers, and a dump station from mid-April through October.
Carley State Park is more rustic. Each of the 20 sites has a picnic table and fire ring, with vault toilets nearby and no electric hookups. The park is only open to rigs 30 feet or less due to the smaller spaces and narrow roads. Autumn Woods RV Park is geared to full-hookup rigs and Mayo Clinic visitors. Cell coverage can be spotty in the deeper river valleys.
