Camping near Gaylord, Minnesota
Gaylord sits in Sibley County in south-central Minnesota, positioned between the Minnesota River valley to the south and the Twin Cities metro to the northeast. It works well as a base for RV travellers who want quiet farm-country roads with access to state parks, river trails, and small-town amenities.
The closest state park camping options are Flandrau State Park in New Ulm and Minneopa State Park west of Mankato, both about an hour's drive. Minneopa is notable for its free-roaming bison herd and the waterfalls along Minneopa Creek. Flandrau offers a semi-modern loop suitable for trailers plus a sand-bottom swimming pond that families use heavily in summer.
Private and county options round out the choices. Peaceful Valley Campsites and Shirley's Park and Country Retreat - Seasonal Campground and Kayak Rental provide seasonal sites closer to Gaylord itself, while the Equestrian - Minnesota Valley State Park campground serves horse campers with hitching posts and access to a long multi-use trail network along the Minnesota River.
Things to do around Gaylord
State-park day trips anchor most itineraries. At Minneopa State Park visitors drive the bison enclosure loop, hike to the upper and lower falls on Minneopa Creek, and walk out to the historic Seppmann Mill. Flandrau State Park adds hiking trails through the Cottonwood River valley, a sand-bottom swimming pond with beach, sand volleyball, and playground equipment.
On water, the Minnesota River corridor supports paddling, fishing, and birding, and Shirley's Park and Country Retreat - Seasonal Campground and Kayak Rental rents kayaks seasonally. Equestrian travellers can ride the multi-use trail network from the Equestrian - Minnesota Valley State Park campground.
Off-park, New Ulm is the closest town of size and offers German-heritage stops, a brewery, and restaurants, useful for a resupply day between campground nights.

The prime RV season runs from roughly Memorial Day through late September. Late June and early July are the wettest weeks and also the busiest at state parks, so electric sites at Minneopa and semi-modern loops at Flandrau fill first. Booking near the opening of the 120-day window is realistic for summer weekends.
Spring arrives late. Snowmelt and heavy May rain can leave low-lying sites soft, and dump stations at Minnesota state parks typically operate seasonally rather than year-round. Fall brings cooler nights, thinner mosquito pressure, and better site availability, with hardwood colour peaking in early to mid-October across the Minnesota River valley.
Winter camping is available at a limited number of state-park sites, but private campgrounds around Gaylord generally close for the season. Roads remain drivable, though sub-zero cold snaps and blowing snow are common between December and February, and most amenities including showers and water fills go offline until spring.
How to book campgrounds near Gaylord
State park sites at Flandrau, Minneopa, and Minnesota Valley State Recreation Area are booked through the Minnesota DNR reservation system at mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone at 866-857-2757. Reservations open up to 120 days in advance, and on that first day of the window the system opens online at 8 a.m. central time.
A vehicle permit is required in addition to camping fees at all Minnesota state parks, sold as a daily pass or an annual pass covering all parks. Confirm site length before booking: Minneopa's Red Fox Campground accommodates RVs up to 60 feet but has only six electric sites.
Private campgrounds including Peaceful Valley Campsites and Shirley's Park and Country Retreat - Seasonal Campground and Kayak Rental are booked directly with the operator. Call ahead for holiday weekends and for any rig longer than 30 feet.
What to expect on the ground
State-park loops in this region tend to be wooded but tightly spaced. Drive-in sites at Flandrau's semi-modern campground sit close together with limited privacy, while walk-in sites in the rustic loop offer more seclusion. Every site includes a picnic table and fire ring, and firewood is sold on site.
Hookups are limited. Most Minnesota state park sites are non-electric; where electric is offered it is often 30-amp and in short supply. Plan on filling fresh water at the contact station rather than at individual sites, and expect seasonal dump stations rather than year-round service.
Cell coverage is generally usable in and around Gaylord, New Ulm, and Mankato, but drops in the wooded river bottoms. Bring bug spray from late May through July and buy firewood locally to avoid moving pests.
