The surrounding area is farmland and prairie, with state parks and county campgrounds set along river corridors within a short drive. Fort Ridgely State Park sits on the historic location of Fort Ridgely, a monument of the Dakota War of 1862. It is the closest state park to Gibbon and includes the Horse Camp - Fort Ridgely State Park equestrian sites in addition to the main drive-in loop. Located in southwest New Ulm, Flandrau State Park is just minutes from downtown and has over 70 campsites in two campgrounds (semi-modern and rustic), plus camper cabins and a large Group Center.
Nearby private and county options include Shirley's Park and Country Retreat, Kuhar Park Campground in Lamberton, and Jackpot Junction Casino Campground on the Lower Sioux reservation in Morton. Together these give renters a mix of hookup levels, from concrete pads with electric and water to rustic walk-in sites.

Flandrau's campground is open year-round, though flush toilets and the dump station operate only in the warmer months. At Flandrau, flush toilets run May 1 through mid-October, and the dump station is seasonal.
Summer is peak season. Weekends and holiday periods fill first, and Oktoberfest in New Ulm drives heavy demand at Flandrau in early October. Reservations are recommended, particularly during busy periods and events like Oktoberfest. Heavy mosquito activity occurs at Flandrau due to nearby marshland, so bring repellent for June and July stays.
Shoulder seasons trade crowds for cooler nights. Spring brings mud and swollen rivers; fall delivers color along the Minnesota and Cottonwood river bluffs. Winter camping at Flandrau is possible for self-contained rigs, but water systems shut down and services are limited.
How to book a site near Gibbon
Minnesota state parks use a single centralized reservation system. Campers can reserve sites online at mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone at 866-857-2757. Reservations can be made up to 120 days before the arrival date. A Minnesota State Park vehicle permit is required in addition to a camping reservation, and can be purchased when a reservation is made, online, or on arrival.
County and private grounds book separately. Kuhar Park Campground is reserved through the City of Lamberton, with an online booking link on the city website. Jackpot Junction Casino Campground is booked directly with the casino, and Shirley's Park and Country Retreat handles its own seasonal bookings.
Summer weekends at Fort Ridgely and Flandrau routinely sell out. Booking the full 120 days ahead is the safest approach; otherwise, check midweek availability or watch for cancellations.
What to expect on site
State park sites in the area are gravel or paved pads with a picnic table, fire ring, and grate. Fort Ridgely State Park Campground has 39 single-family campsites (15 with electric hookups) and sits close to the historic fort and museum. Flandrau has 81 single-family campsites with 34 offering 30/50-amp electric hookups, plus walk-in sites, bunkhouses, and cabins, and can accommodate RVs up to 66 feet.

Kuhar Park's main campground features concrete pads for RVs and offers public water access to the Cottonwood River. There are ten camping sites with concrete pads, water and electrical connections, and a bathhouse for campers. Cell coverage is spotty in some state park loops, so download maps before leaving town.
