Campgrounds and RV parks near Ham Lake, MN

Ham Lake itself supports fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding, and several nearby lakes offer public boat launches and swimming beaches. Bunker Hills Regional Park in Coon Rapids is a common day-trip target, with a large water park, disc golf, and paved trails suitable for kids on bikes. Families heading into the metro can reach the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, and Mall of America within about 40 minutes. Willow Tree Winery is a low-key local stop, and horseback riding operations run in the surrounding rural areas. For a longer excursion, William O'Brien State Park and Wild River State Park along the St. Croix are roughly an hour east and northeast, respectively, and offer river paddling, hiking, and swimming.

The practical RV season around Ham Lake runs from mid-May through mid-October. Most private campgrounds open by early May and close in October, and Anoka County parks such as Bunker Hills operate on a similar May-to-October schedule. Memorial Day through Labor Day is peak season, and weekend sites at popular parks fill weeks in advance. Late spring brings mild days, greening woods, and higher water on the Rum and St. Croix rivers, which is good for paddling but can mean muddy trails. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and mosquitoes peak from June into early August. September and early October are often the most comfortable stretch for camping, with cool nights, fewer bugs, and hardwood color that typically peaks in the first two weeks of October. Winter camping is limited: most private parks close, snow cover is reliable, and any open sites are geared toward hardy travelers with four-season rigs.

Sites near Ham Lake are generally level, with a mix of gravel and grass pads. Full hookups with water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric are common at private resorts, while Minnesota state park sites are more often electric-only with a shared dump station, and only a small number of state park locations offer full hookups. Cell service across the Twin Cities metro is strong, and most private parks offer Wi-Fi of variable quality. Expect mosquitoes and ticks from late May into August, and pack accordingly. Fire rings and picnic tables are standard, but firewood must usually be bought on-site or nearby to comply with Minnesota's emerald ash borer rules. Quiet hours, leash rules, and check-in windows vary by park, so review each campground's policies before arrival.
