Campgrounds and RV parks near Henderson, MN

Trail riding, paddling, and wildlife viewing anchor most trips. The Minnesota Valley State Trail runs between Chaska and Belle Plaine for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and snowmobiling, with a paved section suited to families. The Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail covers 39 paved miles between Mankato and Faribault and passes through Sakatah Lake State Park. At Minneopa State Park, visitors drive through a bison range of roughly 330 acres and walk the trails to the twin waterfalls on Minneopa Creek. Sakatah Lake supports walleye, northern pike, largemouth and white bass, and panfish, and the park rents canoes. Families staying at Minneapolis Southwest KOA Holiday can reach Valleyfair, Canterbury Park, and the Minnesota Renaissance Festival within a short drive.

Peak RV season in the Minnesota River Valley runs from late May through mid-October. Sakatah Lake State Park operates its campground from April 1 through October 23, with drinking water, showers, and the dump station open from mid-May through mid-October; vault toilets stay open year-round. Minneopa State Park is open year-round, though showers and flush toilets are available only May through October, weather permitting. Spring and early summer bring the best fishing and paddling on Sakatah Lake, while mid- to late summer can produce algae growth in the shallow lake. Fall delivers reliable color through the hardwoods along the Sakatah Singing Hills and Minnesota Valley trails, and cooler nights reduce mosquito pressure. Minneapolis Southwest KOA Holiday closes in the shoulder season, typically mid-October through late April. Winter camping in the area is limited to hardier travelers using state-park sites with vault toilets, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing on trail-system segments.

Sakatah Lake State Park has 62 campsites across multiple loops, with 14 electric sites and a dump station; internal roads are narrow with tight turnarounds, so longer rigs should scout carefully. Minneopa State Park's Red Fox Campground offers 61 sites across two loops, with six 30-amp electric sites in the B loop and primitive sites elsewhere; a dump station is available seasonally. The Equestrian campground in the Minnesota Valley State Recreation Area, Lawrence Unit, has a small number of sites geared toward horse campers, with hitching posts, fire rings, and pit toilets. Minneapolis Southwest KOA Holiday provides level pull-throughs, 30- and 50-amp full hookups, a camp store, and cabins, though sites can feel close together. Cell coverage along the river valley is generally reliable; firewood is sold on site at most state parks.
