RV camping near Hinckley, Minnesota
Hinckley sits on Interstate 35 in Pine County, roughly midway between the Twin Cities and Duluth. The town is best known as a highway stop with a large casino resort, but it also anchors an outdoor corridor along the Kettle and Snake rivers that draws RV travelers from spring through fall.
Options close to town range from full-hookup resort camping at Grand Casino Hinckley RV Resort to state park sites at Banning State Park, just minutes off I-35 near Sandstone. Private campgrounds including Banning RV Park and Campground, Pokegama Lake RV Park And Golf near Pine City, and Countryside Campground fill in the surrounding area with a mix of overnight, weekly, and seasonal sites.
Most RV travelers use Hinckley as a base for paddling, hiking, fishing, and fall color trips. Twin Cities day-trippers push weekend demand high, and reservations for state park sites often need to be locked in well ahead of arrival.
Things to do around Hinckley
Banning State Park is the main outdoor draw. The park runs along the Kettle River with dramatic sandstone rock formations, and paddlers come for the turbulent rapids at Blueberry Slide, Mother's Delight, Dragon's Tooth, and Hell's Gate. Hikers can visit Wolf Creek Falls and the historic ruins of Banning Sandstone Quarry, along with Robinson's Ice Cave. The park offers year-round outdoor recreation with 17 miles of hiking trails that include a wheelchair-accessible route and a paved bike trail.
On-water time is easy to plan. Pokegama Lake RV Park And Golf sits on the water near the Snake River corridor with lake access and on-site golf, plus family amenities for downtime between activities.
In town, Grand Casino Hinckley RV Resort provides quick access to the casino complex, dining, and entertainment. Winter visitors can also enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on Banning's trail network.

The main RV season runs roughly from April through late October. Banning State Park's campground operates April 1 through November 21, and private parks in the area generally run from spring through early fall. Snow, frozen hookups, and closed shower buildings make winter RV stays impractical for most travelers, though the state park stays open for day use, skiing, and snowshoeing.
Spring brings high, cold water on the Kettle River. Paddling season at Banning State Park runs from April through September, and the park can get busy, especially on weekends. Bugs pick up by late May.
Summer weekends are the busiest stretch. Twin Cities paddlers, climbers, and families push demand at Banning State Park and nearby private parks, and holiday weekends fill months in advance. Early fall is a favorite window: cooler nights, fewer bugs, and strong color along the Kettle River corridor typically peak in late September and early October.
How to book campgrounds near Hinckley
Banning State Park reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance online at reservemn.usedirect.com or by phone at 866-857-2757. Same-day bookings are allowed when space is open. Vehicle permits are required for all Minnesota state parks, in addition to camping reservation fees, and can be purchased in advance via the Minnesota State Parks website. Watercraft campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis only.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Grand Casino Hinckley RV Resort, Banning RV Park and Campground, Pokegama Lake RV Park And Golf, and Countryside Campground all take direct reservations by phone or through their own websites. Holiday weekends and peak summer dates should be locked in early, and cancellation windows vary by park.
What to expect at Hinckley-area campgrounds
Banning State Park has 33 campsites, 11 with electric hookups, plus a camper cabin and a group site. Campground amenities include drinking water, flush and vault toilets, hot-water showers, trash collection, and a dump station. Sites feel private thanks to heavy vegetation between them, but the campground is small, so book early.
Private parks lean toward full-hookup RV camping with more amenities. Countryside Campground has spacious sites with full hook-ups and 50/30/20 power, along with a heated indoor pool. Banning RV Park and Campground sits about as close to the entrance of Banning State Park as you can get, with a store, community pavilion, showers, and bike rentals.
Cell coverage is generally solid along the I-35 corridor. Expect mosquitoes and ticks in summer, and pack for cool nights even in July.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Hinckley, MN
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hinckley, MN?
RV rental in Hinckley, MN is one of the most affordable ways to explore east-central Minnesota. On RVezy, expect roughly $90 to $180 per night for travel trailers and pop-ups, $150 to $260 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $350 for larger Class A coaches. Hosts set their own nightly rates, so booking midweek or in May, September, or early October typically unlocks the best value on RV rental in Hinckley. Pair that with an affordable site at Grand Hinckley RV Resort and your nightly total stays well under a hotel. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in a deal fast for Corn and Clover Carnival weekend in July.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hinckley%2C%20MinnesotaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Hinckley?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hinckley, MN. Minnesota does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for the personal motorhomes and trailers you'll find on RVezy, including Class A, Class C, and large fifth wheels. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform before your trip. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-timers are surprised how quickly the booking and verification process moves, so you can focus on planning stops at Banning State Park instead of paperwork.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Hinckley RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Hinckley, MN booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-35 with real peace of mind. Protection plans cover damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), letting you dial in the protection that fits your comfort. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan, meaning a flat tire on Highway 48 heading to St. Croix State Park or a dead battery at Grand Hinckley RV Resort gets handled with one phone call. Full details are available on the RVezy insurance and protection page.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Hinckley RV trip?
Life happens, and RVezy makes it low-risk to book your Hinckley RV trip. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy for every booking, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can confirm dates with confidence. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your trip can stay on track. The exact refund amount depends on how far out from your trip start date you cancel, and full details are available in the RVezy Help Center. Pro tip: lock in your dates early for July's Corn and Clover Carnival weekend, when Hinckley fills up fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Hinckley RV rental?
Absolutely, and Hinckley is a fantastic spot for a pet-friendly RV rental. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who welcome furry co-pilots (many waive fees, others charge a small pet cleaning fee they list upfront). Once you're here, leashed dogs are welcome on the 70-mile paved Willard Munger State Trail starting right in Hinckley, and St. Croix State Park, 15 miles east on Highway 48, allows leashed pets on most hiking trails and in the main campground. Banning State Park near Sandstone is also pet-friendly along the Quarry Loop Trail. Pro tip: pack a tie-out and a collapsible water bowl, since summer humidity can climb into the 80s.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/pets.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Hinckley?
Yes, RV delivery in Hinckley is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a motorhome themselves. Many Hinckley-area hosts will deliver to Grand Hinckley RV Resort, St. Croix State Park, Banning State Park near Sandstone, or even a private cabin driveway, then set up the RV, level it, connect hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just filter by Delivery on RVezy and message the host to confirm distance fees and setup details. Pro tip: delivery to St. Croix State Park (about 20 minutes east on Highway 48) is a guest favorite because you arrive to a fully ready campsite right on the river.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/park.html?id=spk00253How many miles can I drive on a Hinckley RV rental?
You've got plenty of road to roam. Most Hinckley hosts on RVezy include between 100 and 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal if you're planning a longer Minnesota loop. Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.50 each, and the policy is clearly listed on every listing before you book. From Hinckley you're perfectly positioned: Minneapolis-St. Paul is 75 miles south, Duluth and Lake Superior 75 miles north, Voyageurs National Park about 215 miles north, and Itasca State Park (headwaters of the Mississippi) roughly 200 miles northwest. Pro tip: message the host to ask about a custom mileage package if you're planning a North Shore RV road trip from Hinckley.
dot.state.mn.us/maps/Where are the best campgrounds near Hinckley for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to the best campgrounds near Hinckley. Grand Hinckley RV Resort, just off I-35 near Grand Casino, offers full-hookup sites, a pool, and a free casino shuttle. St. Croix State Park, about 15 miles east on Highway 48, is Minnesota's largest state park at over 34,000 acres with hundreds of drive-in sites along the river. Banning State Park near Sandstone offers electric sites beside the dramatic Kettle River rapids. St. Croix River Resort on Grace Lake Road has riverside sites with full hookups. Pro tip: book Minnesota state park sites through the DNR reservation system up to 120 days ahead, especially for summer weekends.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/park.html?id=spk00253When is the best time of year for a Hinckley RV trip?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a Hinckley RV trip, with the absolute peak running mid-June through August when daytime highs sit in the upper 70s to mid-80s and the St. Croix and Kettle Rivers run perfect for paddling. September is a local insider favorite: highs in the 60s and 70s, fewer mosquitoes, and brilliant maple and oak color along the Willard Munger State Trail. Winters are real Minnesota winters (January lows often dip below 0°F), but Hinckley becomes a snowmobile hub with 400+ miles of groomed trails, making winter RV stays an adventure if your rental has a four-season package. Pro tip: shoulder-season May and September bookings are noticeably cheaper.
weather.gov/dlh/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Hinckley?
Yes, and Hinckley is honestly one of the easier places in Minnesota to ease into RV driving. Your first time renting an RV here works in your favor because I-35 runs flat and straight through town, Highway 48 toward St. Croix State Park is wide and lightly trafficked, and there are no mountain passes, low bridges, or tight downtowns to worry about. Every RVezy host gives you an in-person walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, leveling, and the dump station, plus you can message them anytime during your trip. Pro tip: practice a few right turns and a slow back-in at the Grand Casino's massive parking lot before heading to the campground.
dot.state.mn.us/trafficeng/safety/index.htmlWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Hinckley trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on I-35, a dead battery at Grand Hinckley RV Resort, or a lockout near Banning State Park is just one phone call away from getting solved. Service providers operate throughout Pine County and the surrounding region, and Hinckley's location halfway between the Twin Cities and Duluth means parts and repair shops are typically within an hour. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app for guidance on quirks specific to that rig, and the RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup so any roadside call is faster.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Hinckley RV rental into Wisconsin or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals, which makes Hinckley a fantastic launchpad. Wisconsin's St. Croix Falls is just 45 minutes east, and you're well-positioned for a Duluth and North Shore loop, a Twin Cities loop, or a longer run to Voyageurs National Park near International Falls. Crossing into Canada may be allowed if the host approves it in advance, so message them directly through the listing before booking if Thunder Bay or Quinetico is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and roadside coverage don't extend there. Pro tip: confirm any out-of-state plans in writing through RVezy messages so everything's clear.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on a Hinckley RV road trip?
Budgeting fuel for an RV road trip from Hinckley is straightforward once you know your rig. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 10 to 14 MPG, Class A coaches 7 to 10 MPG, and tow setups with travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG). Minnesota gas prices generally run a bit below the national average, and Hinckley has convenient fill-ups right off I-35 Exit 183 at the Holiday and Tobies stations before you head out. For a 300-mile loop to Duluth and back in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Hinckley, since prices climb closer to the North Shore.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hinckley?
For the best sites, book early. Minnesota state park campgrounds, including St. Croix State Park, Banning State Park, and Moose Lake State Park, open reservations 120 days in advance through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reservation system, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) often fill within days of opening. Grand Hinckley RV Resort takes reservations directly and tends to book up around Grand Casino concerts and the July Corn and Clover Carnival. Private parks like St. Croix River Resort fill faster on holiday weekends. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have availability even in July, which is the easiest way to grab a great spot last-minute.
dnr.state.mn.us/reservations/index.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Hinckley?
Driving around Hinckley is genuinely RV-friendly. I-35 is a wide, flat, four-lane interstate with easy on and off at Exit 183, and Highway 48 east to St. Croix State Park is a well-maintained two-lane road with gentle curves. There are no mountain grades, no low-clearance bridges in town, and traffic is light outside Friday afternoon casino arrivals. The two things to watch for: deer (especially at dawn and dusk on rural stretches toward Sandstone and Askov) and winter conditions from November through March, when snow, ice, and blowing snow can occur. MnDOT's 511 system gives real-time road conditions. Pro tip: avoid driving the hour before sunset in fall, when deer activity peaks along the highways.
511mn.org/What amenities do Hinckley-area campgrounds offer, and where can I dump tanks?
Hinckley campgrounds cover the full spectrum, so you can match amenities to your trip style. Grand Hinckley RV Resort offers 50/30/20-amp full hookups (water, sewer, electric), a pool, laundry, WiFi, and a dump station. St. Croix State Park's main campground has electric sites, drinking water spigots, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station near the entrance. Banning State Park provides electric sites, vault and flush toilets, and a seasonal sanitation station. If you need fresh water and dump access on a travel day, Grand Hinckley RV Resort offers day-use dump privileges. Pro tip: state park dump stations close when overnight temperatures stay below freezing, typically late October through April.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/camping.htmlWhat's actually inside the RVs available for rent in Hinckley?
You'll find way more comfort than you'd expect. Most Hinckley RVezy rentals come fully stocked: a real bed (queen or king in many Class C and Class A units, plus convertible dinettes and bunks), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, a propane furnace, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator for boondocking. WiFi is hit-or-miss in rural Pine County, so a few hosts include a mobile hotspot as an add-on. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list and message the host if a specific item (like a coffee maker or kids' bedding) matters for your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hinckley%2C%20MinnesotaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Hinckley?
Hinckley hosts offer flexible options to make your trip easy. Popular add-ons include kitchen kits, bedding and linen packages, camping chairs, outdoor grills, generators, bike racks, and Starlink or hotspot rentals (typically $10 to $40 each). For pickup, you can collect the RV at the host's location or arrange delivery to Grand Hinckley RV Resort, St. Croix State Park, or your private destination for a per-mile delivery fee. Mileage policies, generator hours, and any cleaning or dump fees are spelled out on the listing before you book, never as a surprise. Pro tip: message the host two weeks before your trip to confirm add-ons and arrange a pickup time that gives you a full daylight orientation walkthrough.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hinckley%2C%20MinnesotaHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Hinckley RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure on RVezy. You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card (never directly to the host), and your charge is split between the booking total at confirmation and a refundable security deposit that's pre-authorized shortly before pickup. The security deposit is held separately from the booking payment and is released back to your card after the host confirms the RV was returned in the same condition. To avoid any hiccups, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup and dropoff and document the RV with photos and short videos. Pro tip: bring it back with the fuel and propane levels matching pickup and the tanks dumped, and your full deposit comes back fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV camping in Hinckley actually doable?
Yes, and it's a true Minnesota adventure. Hinckley sits at the hub of hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails through the St. Croix, Nemadji, and General Andrews State Forests, making it a winter destination in its own right. To make a winter RV trip work, filter RVezy listings for four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and full furnace systems, and book a campground with shore power. Daytime January highs average in the teens with lows often below zero, so plan for short drives, full propane tanks, and a heated water hose. Pro tip: park staff groom cross-country ski trails at St. Croix State Park through the winter season.
