Camping near Jackson, Minnesota
Jackson sits in southwestern Minnesota along Interstate 90, roughly halfway between the Twin Cities and the South Dakota border. The town works well as an overnight stop for RV travelers crossing the country and as a base for exploring the Des Moines River valley and the Iowa Great Lakes just south of the state line.
Camping options range from full-service private parks to state-run campgrounds with a mix of electric and rustic sites. Jackson KOA Journey sits just off I-90 with pull-through RV sites and amenities aimed at road travelers. Kilen Woods State Park, a short drive northeast near Lakefield, offers semi-modern sites along the Des Moines River, with a portion of sites offering electric hookups.
A short drive south into Iowa opens up the Okoboji lakes region, where Marble Beach State Recreation Area and Elinor Bedell State Park sit on Spirit Lake and East Okoboji Lake respectively. Cenla Campgrounds rounds out the local private options for travelers who want a simpler stay.
Things to do around Jackson
Kilen Woods State Park is the primary outdoor draw close to town. About five miles of trails wind through oak woodland, prairie, and oak savanna, with the Dinosaur Ridge Overlook offering a wide view of the Des Moines River valley. Fishing, canoeing, and hiking along the river are the core activities inside the park.
For water recreation, most travelers head south to the Iowa Great Lakes. Marble Beach State Recreation Area provides access to Spirit Lake for swimming, boating, and fishing, while Elinor Bedell State Park sits on East Okoboji Lake with lakeside access and trails. Jackson itself has a local golf course, city bike paths, and the Jackson Motorplex for motorsports fans, all within a short drive of Jackson KOA Journey.

The main camping season around Jackson runs from May through mid-October. Kilen Woods State Park operates its campground during this window, with a shower building and flush toilets available in season. Jackson KOA Journey operates on a similar warm-season schedule, with pool and outdoor amenities running through the summer months.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm days, active lake use at the Iowa Great Lakes, and full campgrounds on weekends, so booking well ahead is important for holiday stays. Late spring and early fall are quieter and often more comfortable for hiking, though nighttime temperatures drop quickly in September and October.
Winter camping in this part of the plains is limited. Snow, wind, and subfreezing temperatures shut down most services, private parks close, and state park facilities move to reduced day-use operations. Travelers with fully winterized rigs can still overnight at some private stops along I-90, but options are thin.
How to book a site
Minnesota state park sites, including Kilen Woods State Park, are booked through the Minnesota DNR reservation system online or by phone. A separate state park vehicle permit, daily or annual, is required in addition to the camping fee, and can be purchased online, at self-service kiosks, or in person.
Iowa state park campgrounds near Spirit Lake and Okoboji, including Marble Beach State Recreation Area and Elinor Bedell State Park, are booked through the Iowa DNR online reservation portal. Popular summer weekends and holidays fill quickly, so reserving as early as the booking window allows is wise.
Jackson KOA Journey takes reservations directly through the KOA website or by phone, and follows KOA's standard cancellation policy, with a longer notice window required for cabins than for RV or tent sites. Cenla Campgrounds is booked directly with the operator.
What to expect on the ground
Jackson KOA Journey is a highway-oriented park with pull-through sites, hookups, laundry, and a camp store. Its location right off I-90 makes arrival easy but means some road noise on the interstate-facing sites.
Kilen Woods State Park is more rustic. Roads and sites are gravel, spaced among trees, and only a portion offer electric hookups, so most RV campers should arrive with tanks filled and batteries charged. The park operates on a digital payment system tied to the state reservation portal, and cell coverage inside the park can vary by carrier.
Minnesota enforces firewood rules to help prevent the spread of invasive pests. Transporting non-certified firewood into state parks is restricted, so plan to buy firewood locally or from the campground rather than bringing it from home.
