Campgrounds and RV parks near Keewatin, MN

Water dominates the itinerary at McCarthy Beach State Park, where a sandy beach on Sturgeon Lake stretches roughly a half mile with shallow water extending 100 feet or more from shore. Boaters can launch on Side Lake or Sturgeon Lake to explore the chain of five interconnected lakes. Canoes, rowboats, kayaks, and paddleboards are available to rent, and Side Lake offers fishing for bluegill, crappie, northern pike, and walleye, with a fishing pier and boat ramp inside the campground. On land, McCarthy Beach has about 18 miles of trails for hiking through wooded ridge tops and pothole lakes. At Savanna Portage State Park, families can walk the historic 6-mile portage route, swim and fish at Loon Lake, and pedal designated mountain-bike trails. Grand Rapids, a short drive south of Keewatin, adds groceries, laundromats, and the Judy Garland Museum for a rainy-day stop.

Peak RV season in the Keewatin area runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with July and August the warmest and busiest months. Warmest temperatures arrive in July, with average highs around 77°F and lows near 55°F. Long daylight hours, warm lake water, and dry campground roads make this the easiest window for first-time renters. Mosquitoes and biting flies are heavy in June and early July, especially in wetland-heavy parks like Savanna Portage. Shoulder seasons are quieter. Late May can still be cool with lingering ice-out on smaller lakes. September delivers reliable fall color across the birch and maple stands, cooler nights, and far lighter reservation pressure. October brings frost and shorter days, but daytime hiking remains pleasant. Winter camping continues at both parks. All Minnesota state park campsites require a reservation year-round, including sites open in winter. At Savanna Portage, 27 campsites remain available in winter, while electric hookup sites operate May through October.

Expect a rural, forested setting with narrow paved and gravel park roads. Interior loops at Side Lake have sharp turns and tight spurs, better suited to smaller trailers than large motorhomes. At McCarthy Beach, electric sites number 21 and the RV length limit is 40 feet, measured from the front of the tow vehicle to the rear of the vehicle being towed. Savanna Portage accommodates rigs up to 55 feet on its 15 electric sites. Amenities at both state park campgrounds include drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, and dump stations, with vault toilets in outlying loops. Cell service is spotty, so download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving Grand Rapids or Hibbing. Gates close at 10 p.m., generators are permitted between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., and quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Bring bug spray in early summer and firewood from approved local sources.
