Campgrounds near Kenyon, Minnesota
Kenyon sits in Goodhue County in southeastern Minnesota, roughly an hour south of the Twin Cities and within reach of the Cannon River valley, the Zumbro River, and the wooded rolling farmland typical of the region. RV travelers use Kenyon as a base for a mix of state park camping and private family resorts, most within a 30 to 45 minute drive.
Nerstrand Big Woods State Park is one of the closest options, known for spring wildflowers including the dwarf trout lily, Hidden Falls, maple-basswood fall color, and wooded trails used for skiing in winter. To the south, Rice Lake State Park lies just east of Owatonna, with park lands entirely surrounding shallow Rice Lake, an important stopping point for migrating waterfowl.
Private campgrounds round out the choices. Shades of Sherwood Campground sits on the Zumbro River near Zumbrota, Cannon Falls Campground is northeast in the Cannon River corridor, and Camp Faribo lies west near Faribault along the I-35 corridor. Together they cover rustic state park camping through full-hookup family resorts.
Things to do near Kenyon
Hiking is the anchor activity. The trail to Hidden Falls draws families to Nerstrand Big Woods, which has about 11 miles of hiking trails through maple-basswood forest. Rice Lake State Park adds wooded and prairie trails, birdwatching for migrating waterfowl, and paddling and small boat access on the lake, though swimming is not available and the shallow lake is better suited to canoes and kayaks than larger boats.
Water play centers on the private parks. Shades of Sherwood is set on the Zumbro River, with river tubing a common activity. Cannon Falls Campground and Camp Faribo offer family amenities such as pools, playgrounds, and planned weekend activities.
Off-site day trips include the Cannon Valley Trail for biking and the towns of Northfield, Faribault, and Red Wing for dining and shopping.

The main RV season runs mid-April through mid-October. Rice Lake State Park's drive-in campground typically opens in April and closes in late October, and most private parks in the area operate on a similar April through October schedule.
Summer is peak. Reservations are strongly recommended for summer weekends and holiday periods when sites fill quickly. Spring brings wildflowers and mud, and heavy rains can flood riverfront and low-lying sites. Fall color in the maple-basswood woods around Nerstrand is a strong draw in late September and into October.
Winter camping is limited but real. The Nerstrand campground and park are open year round, but only 7 of the 51 sites are available in the winter. Water, flush toilets, showers, trash collection, and the dump station run early May through mid October. Private parks close for the season and reopen in spring.
How to book campsites near Kenyon
State parks and private campgrounds use different systems. Reservations at Minnesota state parks are available up to 120 days in advance via the Minnesota DNR reservation site at mndnr.gov/reservations or by calling 866-857-2757. Online booking is available 24 hours a day, and phone hours run April through September, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. This covers Nerstrand Big Woods State Park and Rice Lake State Park.
Private resorts book direct. Shades of Sherwood, Cannon Falls Campground, and Camp Faribo take reservations by phone or through their websites. Summer holiday weekends and any weekend at a family resort with a pool tend to fill first, so plan several weeks out.
Larger rigs should check individual site descriptions before booking, since some back-in sites are tight and pad lengths vary.
What to expect
Expect a mix of wooded state park sites and open, grassy family resorts. Nerstrand Big Woods State Park has one main campground with 51 sites, most back-in with a few walk-in tent sites, and 27 of the sites have 30-amp electric hookups; the rest are non-electric. Most sites accommodate rigs up to about 60 feet. Rice Lake State Park has a two-loop drive-in campground with roughly 40 sites split between an electric loop and a non-electric loop, plus walk-in, cart-in, and canoe-in sites.
Shades of Sherwood, Cannon Falls Campground, and Camp Faribo offer more RV-oriented amenities, including full or partial hookups, showers, laundry, and dump stations at most locations. Pull-through sites for larger rigs are available at some private parks.
Gravel or narrow park roads, tight tree canopy, and mosquitoes near water are all realistic. Cell coverage varies by carrier.
