Campgrounds and RV parks near Lake Crystal, MN

At Minneopa State Park, visitors can view the free-roaming bison herd, hike to the two-tier Minneopa Falls, and see the 19th-century Seppmann stone windmill preserved on the park grounds. Trails connect the campground to restored prairie and the Minnesota River valley. Flandrau State Park adds a chlorinated sand-bottom swimming pond and beach and roughly eight miles of trails for hiking and birdwatching, with sand volleyball, a playground, and access to the Cottonwood River. New Ulm's German-heritage downtown sits a short distance away. Closer to home, Watona Park Campground and Park in Madelia is set in a city park with pool, golf, and disc golf close by, and offers canoe access on the Watonwan River. Shady Oaks Campground provides a quiet base at the edge of Garden City with river fishing nearby.

The primary RV season runs from mid-April into October. Most municipal and private campgrounds in the area follow a warm-season schedule, opening in April and closing by mid to late October. Shady Oaks Campground, located at the Blue Earth County fairgrounds in Garden City, closes during county fair week each summer while the fairgrounds host the event. Summer brings the warmest weather, the busiest weekends, and the highest bookings, particularly around Independence Day and New Ulm festival dates. Late May through June is often the wettest stretch, with thunderstorms possible; September delivers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong fall color along the Minnesota and Cottonwood river valleys. Winter camping is limited. Minneopa State Park keeps a rustic log cabin open year-round with electricity and a propane fireplace, and Flandrau State Park's semi-modern campground includes two heated year-round camper cabins. Most private and municipal campgrounds close by late October and do not reopen until spring. Snow, ice, and sub-zero cold snaps are typical from December through February.

Sites in this area lean toward electric hookups rather than full sewer, so plan on using dump stations. Minneopa State Park has 68 single-family sites for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 60 feet, with 6 electric sites, 4 group sites, and a cabin, plus drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station. Flandrau State Park's semi-modern campground provides 52 sites, including 34 electric sites with 30 and 50 amp service and 18 non-electric sites, and is big-rig friendly for RVs up to 66 feet with flush toilets and showers. Municipal options tend to be more open and lawn-like. Watona Park Campground in Madelia has 47 sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups, 4 water-and-electric sites, 23 electric-only sites, and 3 tent-only sites. Shady Oaks Campground and Kuhar Park Campground offer smaller loops of electric and water sites suitable for mid-size rigs, with dump stations reached in the nearby towns.
