Campgrounds near Lakeville, Minnesota
Lakeville sits in Dakota County about 20 miles south of Minneapolis and St. Paul, making it a practical base for RV travelers who want quick metro access without staying in the city. The area combines suburban services with quick reach to Minnesota River Valley trails, several regional parks, and the lake country of Scott and Rice counties.
Campground options within a short drive range from full-hookup commercial parks to state park sites in mature hardwood forest. Town and Country Campground and RV Park and Fish Lake Acres Campground sit closest to Lakeville itself, while Dakotah Meadows RV Park in Prior Lake offers a paved, big-rig-friendly setup next to Mystic Lake Casino.
For a more natural setting, Nerstrand Big Woods State Park lies about an hour south near Northfield and offers wooded sites in one of the last remnants of Minnesota's original Big Woods. Roberds Lake Resort and Campgrounds, near Faribault, rounds out the choices with lakefront sites geared toward fishing families.
Things to do near Lakeville
Families staying near Lakeville can reach the Mall of America, Valleyfair amusement park, and the Minnesota Zoo within about 30 minutes. The Minnesota River bottoms and Cleary Lake Regional Park offer paved trails suitable for biking with kids, and dozens of lakes in the surrounding counties support fishing, kayaking, and swimming through the warm months.
For day trips out of the metro, Nerstrand Big Woods State Park is known for its spring wildflowers, large hardwood trees, and fall color, with a boardwalk trail and a hike to Hidden Falls along about 11 miles of hiking trails. Northfield, home to St. Olaf and Carleton colleges, sits nearby and works well for a lunch stop. RVers staying at Dakotah Meadows RV Park can also use the property's free shuttle to Mystic Lake Casino.

The prime RV season around Lakeville runs from mid-May through mid-October. Late spring brings green-up and wildflowers but also rising rainfall, so campers should expect wet ground and active mosquitoes near wooded and wetland sites. Summer is peak season, with warm days, long daylight, and full campground programming, but also the busiest weekends and the highest chance of afternoon thunderstorms. June is typically the wettest month.
Early fall is often the best window for a relaxed trip. September and early October deliver cooler nights, fewer bugs, and strong hardwood color, especially at Nerstrand Big Woods. Weekend sites still book up during peak leaf-peeping.
Winter camping is limited. Nerstrand Big Woods State Park's campground is open year round with drinking water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, trash collection, and a dump station available early May through mid October, but only 7 of the 51 sites are available in the winter. Most private RV parks in the area close from late fall through early spring.

How to book a campsite
Minnesota state parks, including Nerstrand Big Woods, use a centralized reservation system operated by the Minnesota DNR. Camping reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance of the arrival date. Online reservations are available 24 hours a day, and phone reservations can be made by calling 866-857-2757, with call center hours running daily from April through September and reduced hours the rest of the year.
Private parks near Lakeville, including Town and Country Campground and RV Park, Fish Lake Acres Campground, Dakotah Meadows RV Park, and Roberds Lake Resort and Campgrounds, each book directly through their own websites or by phone. Dakotah Meadows RV Park is typically open seasonally from mid March through mid November, and holiday weekends fill early, so booking two to three months out is advised for summer stays.
What to expect on-site
Expect a mix of park styles. Dakotah Meadows RV Park features 122 full-hookup, paved campsites that are big-rig friendly, many pull-through accessible, with free WiFi, pet-friendly policies, and a dump station. Amenities include a mini-store, shower houses, laundry, playground, walking paths, a free shuttle to the casino, an on-site RV wash, and a fueling station.
State park sites are more rustic. Nerstrand Big Woods State Park's campground has 51 campsites for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 60 feet, with 27 sites offering 30-amp electric hookups, plus walk-to and group campsites, each with a parking spur, table, fire ring, and grill. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the Lakeville area but can weaken at wooded state park sites.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Lakeville RV trip?
Absolutely, and Lakeville is a fantastic basecamp for it. Many RVezy hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental Lakeville pup parents love, just filter by Pet-Friendly when you search. Once you've got the rig, head to Ritter Farm Park in Lakeville with its off-leash dog area on Lake Marion, or take the trails at Lebanon Hills Regional Park in Eagan where leashed dogs are welcome on most paths. Cleary Lake Regional Park also has dog-friendly trails just north of Lakeville. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and ask if they leave bowls or a leash hook inside, many hosts include thoughtful pet extras.
co.dakota.mn.us/parks/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Lakeville?
Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-time renters. RV delivery Lakeville hosts will drive the rig straight to your campground, family member's driveway, or even a Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) pickup spot just 20 minutes north, then set it up, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. That means you can fly in, get picked up, and start your Lakeville RV trip without ever driving the RV yourself. Filter listings by 'Delivery' to see who offers it. Pro tip: book delivery to Lebanon Hills or Whitetail Woods Regional Park, you'll save hours of setup and dive straight into the trails.
co.dakota.mn.us/parks/camping/Pages/default.aspxHow far can I travel from Lakeville on a typical RV rental?
Plenty of range. Lakeville sits right on I-35, which makes it a launchpad for incredible Minnesota and Wisconsin road trips. Many hosts offer generous mileage packages, and some list RVs with unlimited mileage for longer hauls. Popular routes from Lakeville include Duluth and the North Shore of Lake Superior (about 175 miles north), the Mississippi River bluffs and Red Wing (about 50 miles east), Itasca State Park at the Mississippi headwaters (around 230 miles northwest), and the Wisconsin Dells (about 230 miles southeast). Pro tip: check the listing's mileage policy before booking and message the host if you're planning a big loop, they'll often quote a flat package for the trip.
dot.state.mn.us/maps/index.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Lakeville, MN?
You've got excellent options within a short drive. The best campgrounds near Lakeville include Lebanon Hills Regional Park Campground in Eagan (15 minutes north, full hookups and wooded sites), Dakotah Meadows RV Park in Prior Lake (concrete pads with 50-amp full hookups, walking distance to Mystic Lake), Cleary Lake Regional Park near Prior Lake (lakeside drive-in sites), Whitetail Woods Regional Park in Farmington (year-round camper cabins and RV spots), and Town & Country Campground in Savage. For state park camping, Nerstrand Big Woods State Park is about 40 minutes south with classic Minnesota hardwood forest. Pro tip: most regional campgrounds book 3 to 4 months ahead for summer weekends, reserve early.
co.dakota.mn.us/parks/camping/lebanonhills/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Lakeville?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping Lakeville, with July typically the warmest month (highs in the low 80s F) and the most sunshine. June can be the wettest, so pack a rain jacket, while September delivers crisp days in the 70s F, fewer mosquitoes, and stunning fall color along the Cannon River and Minnesota River valleys. Winters get genuinely cold (January lows often below 10 F with significant snowfall), so most campgrounds close from late October to April. Pro tip: book a Lakeville RV trip in early October for peak foliage along the Mississippi bluffs, you'll see crowds drop and rates dip.
weather.gov/mpx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I know how to use everything?
You'll be set up for success from minute one. First time renting an RV in Lakeville? Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, dump valves, and how to level the rig. You can also message your host any time during your trip with questions. Many Lakeville hosts even leave printed cheat sheets inside the RV. Pro tip: choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan for your first trip, they drive much like a large van, and book two nights at Lebanon Hills (just 15 minutes away) so you can practice systems close to home before any longer haul.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/camping_for_beginners.htmlWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every Lakeville rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Whether you're parked at Cleary Lake Regional Park or 150 miles north on I-35 heading to Duluth, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a direct resource for quirks specific to their RV. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup and save the RVezy support number in your phone, so if anything happens between Lakeville and the North Shore, you can resolve it quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lakeville RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to most of it. An RV road trip from Lakeville commonly crosses into Wisconsin (Hudson is just 35 miles east on I-94), Iowa (about 90 miles south on I-35), or the Dakotas, all fully allowed on RVezy. Crossing into Canada (think Thunder Bay or Winnipeg) may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so confirm with your host through the messaging tool before booking and bring your passport. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: the Lake Superior Circle Tour through Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ontario is a bucket-list loop from Lakeville.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Lakeville RV trip?
Easy to plan for. Most Class C motorhomes get about 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans (Class B) around 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG combined). Minnesota gas prices usually hover near or just below the national average, with plenty of stations along I-35 and Cedar Avenue in Lakeville. For a long weekend loop from Lakeville to Duluth and back (around 350 miles), budget roughly $130 to $180 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at Costco off County Road 70 in Lakeville before you leave, it's consistently one of the cheapest fuel stops in Dakota County.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Lakeville?
Earlier is better, and the system makes it simple. Minnesota state parks (like Nerstrand Big Woods and Afton State Park) accept reservations up to 120 days in advance through the Minnesota DNR reservation system at reservemn.usedirect.com, and popular summer weekends fill within hours of opening. Dakota County regional parks like Lebanon Hills and Whitetail Woods also book 3 to 4 months ahead for summer Fridays and Saturdays. Same-day reservations are available fee-free if you're feeling spontaneous. Pro tip: set a calendar alert 120 days before your target Lakeville RV trip date and reserve at 8 a.m. Central, that's when premium lakeside sites open up and disappear fast.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/self_service.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Lakeville?
Lakeville is one of the easier metro launching points for an RV. The town sits right on I-35 with wide, flat suburban roads, and traffic is lightest if you head south away from the Twin Cities core. Avoid driving through downtown Minneapolis or downtown St. Paul in a large rig, low bridges and tight one-ways aren't RV-friendly. Use the I-494 and I-694 beltways instead. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March, so most rentals operate May to October. Pro tip: leave Lakeville before 3 p.m. on Fridays to dodge cabin-country traffic heading north on I-35 toward Duluth and the lakes.
dot.state.mn.us/trafficeng/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Lakeville?
You'll find everything from rustic to resort. Most full-service parks near Lakeville (Dakotah Meadows RV Park, Town & Country Campground, Lebanon Hills) offer 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. Dakotah Meadows even has an on-site RV wash and fuel. Minnesota state parks like Nerstrand Big Woods provide electric sites and modern shower buildings but typically no sewer at the site, you'll use the on-site dump station before departure. Potable water fill stations are standard. Pro tip: top off fresh water at the campground before heading to a more remote spot like Afton State Park along the St. Croix River, where hookups are limited.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/campsite_descriptions.htmlWhat's typically included inside a Lakeville RV rental?
More than you'd expect. Most motorhome rental Lakeville listings come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, kitchen with stove, microwave, and fridge, indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette that converts to extra sleeping, air conditioning, propane furnace, and a TV. Class C motorhomes and travel trailers on RVezy typically sleep 4 to 8 people with seatbelts for travel-day passengers. Many hosts include generators (great for boondocking), outdoor chairs, kitchenware, and bedding. Wi-Fi varies, and some hosts include a mobile hotspot. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm bed linens and towels are included so you don't overpack.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionAre there add-ons like generators, bikes, or camp chairs available?
Yes, and they're often what makes a campervan rental Lakeville trip extra easy. RVezy hosts commonly offer add-ons like portable generators ($25 to $50/night), bike racks, kayaks, fire pits, outdoor grills, camp chairs, linen packages, and kitchen kits. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Lakeville or a nearby community like Apple Valley, Burnsville, or Farmington, with delivery available for an additional fee based on distance. Mileage policies vary by host (typically 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles around $0.30 to $0.45 each). Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen and kitchen package, you'll show up to a fully made-up rig and skip a Target run.
exploreminnesota.com/things-to-do/outdoor-adventuresHow does payment and the security deposit work?
It's straightforward and secure. When you book a Lakeville RV through RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit card, no cash handed to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (the amount is shown on each listing) and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in the same condition. The renter protection plan you select at checkout covers most accidental damages, so the deposit is really there for things like excess cleaning or missing equipment. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the RV exterior, interior, and odometer at pickup and dropoff, that simple step makes any deposit return smooth and fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I park my RV overnight at a Minnesota rest area on the way to or from Lakeville?
Plan to overnight at campgrounds rather than rest areas. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) limits stays at safety rest areas, which is fine for a meal or quick nap but not a full night's sleep. The good news: there are plenty of legal overnight options near Lakeville, including Dakotah Meadows RV Park (open year-round), Lebanon Hills Regional Park Campground, and Cabela's in Owatonna (about 45 miles south, which often allows overnight RV parking with permission). Pro tip: download the MnDOT 511 app to find rest areas with dump stations along I-35 for quick clean-outs between Lakeville and your next destination.
